TESL Rockers Rock the Nights: 9 and 10 December 2011

Hi Rockers,

I am so proud of you people. You people smashed the rocks on both nights. I usually would be sitting back with evaluation sheets and pen but on those 2 nights I just want to absorb the emotions reverberating on stage and all around the hall. I laughed, i cried and there were times when the emotions were just too much. Rockers, thank you for the unforgettable semester. I LOVE you.

Augosta Boal and His Ideas

There are just too many theater theorists whom we met this semester. Many of their ideas ,if we looked closely, are valuable for ESL classroom.
In this space I would like you to look at Boal's ideas on theater. What are his ideas and do you think these ideas are different from the ideas of other theater theorists? Which of his ideas in your opinion is beneficial for students, teacher trainees and teachers of ESL?

A Note for Matin: I had been hungry, all the Years -

Is it wrong to want more in life?
Should we be satisfied with what we have and
Should we be contented with the situation we are in at present?
What does Emily say about her unsatiated hunger in " I had been hungry, all the Years -"

A Note for Matin: Byzantium, Yeat's Utopia.

Today, we traveled from Serdang to Byzantium. And from Byzantium, we flew off to Iran, Europe, States and back to Serdang. The road to Byzantium was a choppy, arduous one and there were colossal walls we had to climb over. But once we reached the other side, the experience was awe inspiring. We get to discover William Butler Yeat's Sailing to Byzantium. Alas, Matin one special request, could you share this journey with the rest of people who are trying to crack the code of Yeat's Byzantium.

The Lament of 6 May 2011

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,
creeps in this petty pace from day to day
To the last syllable of recorded time,
And all yesterday's dialogue signify
Nothing
When we strut and fret
And SMS
Puan Ju, tell me the tale
Of tomorrow's poetry.

Redemption 2: Heathcliff and Catherine in Wuthering Heights

Hello my long distance people,

It has been a month since you sat for your final. I know you don't want to think anymore about EDU 3215. It's done and over with. But my people, i'm offering you an opportunity to make changes to your fate. But alas it is your choice.

The relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy has always fascinated me. My fascination is also based on how each of you people looks at this relationship differently. How would you categorize their relationship and are you as enchanted/enthralled as me with their twist of fate or are you repulsed by the ugliness shown by excessive emotions?

Reminder: Micro teaching and Reflections

Hi Everyone from Near and Far,

There are still a number of you who haven't send in their recordings of the micro teaching. Please do so pronto! Those who have forgotten to include their reflections in the assignment 2, please reflect now and email the soft copy to me at juridah.rashid@gmail.com. You want to do good right? Do not Delay!

In Preparing for the D-Day: Edna and her Narrative in The Awakening

Edna has never failed to invoke heated discussions in any of my novel classes. She is a character that you love to love and love to hate. She has always been an example of a strong female character. Is it wrong to be happy? Isn't that what every individual in this world seeks for? But in pursuit of her happiness death overtakes her. So my question to you people, does she choose death or death chooses her?

My Favourite Season of All

Fall in Vermont was the most memorable of all. Fall in New York State was vibrant and alive. But, Fall in Cape Girardeau stays with me and grows on me. I could still feel the leaves at my feet as I trudged downhill back to my abode; The soft wind lifting my hair as I looked at the opposite bank of the Mississippi River.
Keats's "To Autumn" reminds me of the things I miss; things I wish would still be. Alas, those days are far gone. Those were the days when I felt the world was at my feet.
'To Autumn" has always brought me back to a place I wish to remain.
Has "To Autumn" evoked any strong emotions in you, or it is THE POEM that you can never relate to?

Redemption III: My brain Retards, My mind Perplexes - The Punch from Ode on a Grecian Urn.

When I first read Ode on a Grecian Urn, my mind refused to cooperate. It went numb. It took me a long while to slowly unravel the beauty of the poem.

What is your reaction when you first read Ode on A Grecian Urn?
How long does it take for the numbness to wear off?
Do you manage to discover the beauty of the ode or the mystery of the poem alludes you?
Perhaps by identifying the images in each of the stanza, you will get to form a comprehensible picture of the poem.
You might want to put in your understanding of the last couplet in the final stanza.

I am Negro, I am Negro................Say what?

Every Semester I would be informed the poem Negro by Langston Hughes is one that exasperates many. They Googled, and they Googled and they Googled. The end result is that there are heaps of information on other Negro but not the Negro they have been assigned with.

I am ecstatic. For once you have to rely on your own interpretations without relying on what others have said. My sincere advice; Switch on your creative and critical thinking self and share with the rest of the community what you have discovered about the poem Negro.

Redemption 1: Love in Keat's Bright Star and Shakespeare's Sonnet 55 and 64

Love laughs. Love hurts. These are the two dichotomies of love we encounter everyday in our lives. Love is never stagnant and if Lovers do not saunter together with Love, Love will leave them behind.Such is Love.....

Therefore, to understand the elusive qualities of Love I would like you to look at the ideas of Love shared by Keats in Bright Star and Shakespeare in Sonnet 55 and 64.

Micro teaching session in UPM

I am organizing 2 days of micro teaching at UPM on 9 April 2011 and 16 April 2011. After the final last weekend I have another 3 weeks to complete whatever evaluation I have failed to realize prior to the finals. This is my invitation for you to complete the 2nd evaluation for this course. There are 4 sessions on each day but i recommend you to come for the 11.00 - 13.00 session. Please let me know if you are taking up on this offer.

What is lo.....ve..what is love? Love in Keats' Bright Star and Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, 55 and 64

Love makes the world go round. Love empowers. Love conquers. Love lifts you up, but love can also destroy and leave you dead for many centuries.
Keats in Bright Star and Shakespeare in Sonnet 18, Sonnet 55 and Sonnet 64 gave us multi interpretations of love. Whose ideas of love can you relate to? Or perhaps their ideas of love are so out of this world that you are scratching your head to figure out what they are saying about love.Or maybe they know next to nothing about love. Only the young feel love the old should have just concentrated on dying as love has passed them by. Okay, spill it all lovers!

Learning to laugh at Yourself: A panacea for the Doubters

It has been a grueling 2 days. I know majority of you wished you were elsewhere.
For 14 hours you talked, you discussed, you shared, you presented and you role-played. Never before your vocal chord was stretched to its very limit.
Was it time well spent or was it 2 days of regrets?

Take at least few minutes of your time to reflect and share with me your experience of that 2 days.

Monologue: Speech of solitary souls

Hi,

We are meeting on Sunday 27 February 2011 at 3.00 pm. You people have a session with Cik Sharifah before meeting me. Unfortunately we can't meet for monologue in the morning as my morning hours are completely filled up with classes. Is there any way that we could do this on Saturday?

For people in Sibu and Kuching, most probably your performance will be next week. Let me know if it is a no go as I have to make arrangements with the people over here. So Sibu and Kuching you have another week to prepare and to email me your script. I am looking forward to see you people in your roles.

Blue, blue, blue - the sky is blue

Before we move on to the next novel; I would like you to look closely at Great Expectations. In your paper on relationship, you would have analyzed most of the major issues in the narrative.

Previously, in my lecture I have shared with you the descriptions of weather, season, time of day, day and how these descriptions are used as predictors of what you would come across later in the chapter.

Your task is to choose one of these (weather, season, time of day, day)and discuss further how the use of, say for example gray and stormy weather, informs you of what you read next in the chapter. Sorry people descriptions of weather in chapter 39 is mine. You have to look elsewhere.

Micro of a micro of a Micro

Hi again,

I guess I am on a roll. Since I am here I might as well pacify those hearts that are still patty-patter over the micro teaching. Micro teaching is to be done during the second face to face meeting. But if you are willing to come to campus on other dates I would welcome that as on the same weekend I have another round of evaluation. I have to evaluate students performance for EDU 3202 Theatre in TESL. Those who cannot come to Serdang for evaluation please let me know as I have to make arrangements with your tutor for the rubric of the evaluation.

I will try to post topics for micro teaching by tonight. All the best for your mid-semester examination.

Assignment 1 Relationship Paper (Great Expectations)

Hi,

When I gave this assignment I noticed that a number of you were missing. And perhaps because I gave you this assignment too early in the morning several of you were still in your own private world.

The due date for this assignment is 10 February 2011. As I had given this assignment on 27 January 2011, you are given 2 weeks to sit and simmer and produce this task. It is not a task that dark mist will loom all throughout your semester break. It is just something that I would like you to look at and analyze when you look at the characters you encountered in the novel. Choose 1 relationship or 2 relationships(if you plan to do a compare and contrast paper). Look at the chosen relationship(s) and decide the type of relationship those characters have. State your thesis statement (the focus of your paper - in this case you would label the type of relationship the characters have. Elaborate on the relationship those characters have and the impact of that on them. Providing quotations is recommended. Remember people the paper is about 3-5 pages long BUT I strongly recommend you to limit it to a 3 pages paper. Please provide a cover page that has these information: semester, course code, course name, your name, your matric number, and due date for the paper. Please email me the soft copy of this assignment to this address juridah.rashid@gmail.com

Expectations of Great Expectations

Hi,
I have received numerous emails asking me where are those entries I promised previously. Sorry people. Somehow or rather things got caught up in my way. I wasn't sure what it was but here I am. Are you ready?

I have read Great Expectations more than 10 times. Yeah..I know many of you must have thought how morbid I am. I think you must have questioned my sanity when I said I love reading the novel. But each time I read Great Expectations I find something new. I think it is because each time I read the narrative, my focus would be different.

In your readings of Great Expectations, I am sure you would have focused on the elements of LOVE (yeah..love), education, moral, economy, culture and social status. But for your first time sharing here in this space, I would like you to look at the elements of abuse.Remember, abuse can be in the form or physical, emotional, intellectual etc. What are the forms of abuse you have stumbled upon in your readings and what are the effects of those abuse on the individuals you have chosen to focus on.

p.s. the extra vitamin c from the oranges abundance during Chinese New Year would definitely help you out here...
