Fall in Vermont was the most memorable of all. Fall in New York State was vibrant and alive. But, Fall in Cape Girardeau stays with me and grows on me. I could still feel the leaves at my feet as I trudged downhill back to my abode; The soft wind lifting my hair as I looked at the opposite bank of the Mississippi River.
Keats's "To Autumn" reminds me of the things I miss; things I wish would still be. Alas, those days are far gone. Those were the days when I felt the world was at my feet.
'To Autumn" has always brought me back to a place I wish to remain.
Has "To Autumn" evoked any strong emotions in you, or it is THE POEM that you can never relate to?
Hello Puan Juridah......
ReplyDeleteYeay, finally, you posted about my favourite poem of all........
This poem cannot evoke memories in me, but it definately evokes my senses, my imagination.....The way John keats has put Autumn, is so awesome...He does not make the season sound as if it is dying....the season is alive...
Many poets make autumn sound like a dying season.....But Keats make autumn sound so alive....
My imagination grows along with my senses....the visual, kinestthatic, tactile images in this poem is awesome....
autumn, the sun and all other images in this poem are further personified...like the autumn is the sun's friend, and they are conspiring about how to load people with blessings.....
Flowers, bees, apples, hazel uts...wow.....the beauty of the season cannot be merely described with simple words......
Thanks for posting this out Puan Ju.....I LOVE this poem...no matter what anyone might say.....

ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem for the first time, I fall in love with it. I feel calm as I read this poem. I can feel the situations that John Keats has created. The poem created closeness with human. The weather, the sun, and even the fruits are so near with human. The sound of birds, crickets and wind are around. This sounds portray the beauty of autumn seasons.Usually, autumn is associated with death but in this poem, Keats makes it alive. It makes me feel reborn, feel anew and the best part is, it make I feel like rejuvenate. Keats use imagery to make the readers feel what he feels.
This poem paints pictures in my imagination of yellow, red, brown leaves...
ReplyDeleteAutumn, a season I have not experienced but only imagined through years of reading children story books that has autumn and children playing in the leaves, the wind blowing causing rustling of leaves, adults sweeping the leaves into piles to be jumped into by children and also a season when Halloween happens with pumpkins, browned corn kernels and red ripened apples...
Somehow I sensed that in the last stanza of the poem, there is a sense of gratefulness or a reminder to be content, to not long for Spring, nor regret that Spring is gone but to appreciate the present as Autumn has its beauty, a song of its own that is of different tune from Spring.
This poem has not evoked strong emotions in me. But it does brings up a wish to experience the season of Autumn in an overseas country, to see its beauty, to enjoy the breeze, taste apples plucked right from trees or even see apples still on trees! :D

Hi Puan Ju! :D
First thing comes to my mind when I read this poem, is my home. Yes,my house. I know its kind of weird, but I do feel that. You may ask why right?
It is because I felt serene after read through this poem. That's make me think of my home.
Okay, back to the " To Autumn", based on my understanding, Keats portray the autumn as a human, more specific, as a lady. He tells how the autumn "collaborate" with the sun to produce such a wonderful scene.
Fruits ripen,
Flowers blossom,
Crickets singing.
Instead of the normal perception that "autumn" is always been related to the unwelcome feeling such as sad, dull, etc, but in the "To Autumn" Keats changed it to something beautiful and all the elements in this poem, create their own beautiful "autumn song". :)
Keats also used so many images in this poem. For instance, flowers, fruits, and animals. This elements allow the readers, to imagine the atmosphere of the "autumn" that Keats tries to create.
Thank You. :)

When i read this poem, plus i did my microteching on this, i love it but i found it is difficult to teach d message as it is indescribable feelings.. it's a very beautiful poem..
I think this autumn describes our stages in life.. the fruits ripening... it means d beginning of our life, childhood was full with joy.. and then we harvest the fruit, the crops..means we're growing older and go through living... and then leaves start to turn yellow, and fall...we're getting old and weak.. then comes winter.. cold and stiff.. its the ending..
The poem reminds me to not always admire spring- to not always wanted to be showered in happiness and joy.. we have to cherish autumn, we should 'harvest' 'fruits of good deeds' as many as we can as it is our preparation to face winter...
thats all.thanks u ma'am

ReplyDeleteBasically this poem talks about the season of autumn. In my opinion John Keats was describing the main characteristics of autumn in this poem. There are many colorful and detailed images that was used. In other words autumn also means dying or leaving something. So i guess Keats meant that by reading this poem one could really understand the process and hardship of dying. He put it in a way that it's not scary and as humans we have to come to terms that one day we will leave this earth. He uses the images to full extent to show us that autumn is actually something breezy and fun and it's not something sombre.

ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, I find little connection with 'To Autumn', where Autumn is being described in many positive ways. 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' that seems more difficult to understand connect well with me.
Both poems have a lot of images, but I only find beauty in a urn rather than in autumn.
Like the other poems which talk about death, immortality, reality and dream; 'To Autumn' is still exploring the similar themes. But Keats blends living and dying, pleasant and unpleasant. He accepts the reality in this poem where in other poems he does not want to face reality. He learns the fact that acceptance of mortality is not equivalent to destructiveness.
Autumn, a season of maturity, part of the process in life, he accepts it although winter that represents death and ageing is coming.

ReplyDeleteAutumn is also my favorite season of them all.
The calmest season of all seasons.
With the calming breeze of the wind.
Watching the leaves falling slowly and beautifully from trees.
The harmonious earthy colors that fill the earth puts me at ease.
Reminds me of my childhood.
How I used to be so carefree and happy-go-lucky.
Now I really missed those days.
Where there were less responsibilities and less things to think about.
I miss those days where I could just shut my eyes and sleep. No stress. No insomnia.

ReplyDeleteWhat a nice, sweet poem...
Hurm... Normally poet will use autumn to portray something that had reached its last stage of life, but in this poet, Keats makes me see autumn differently. I could feel the joy, the calmness through the breezy air of autumn. And sometimes it brings me the feeling to be alone in that autumn. I just want to be alone, feel the leaves falling on my body as I lay down on the grass. (oh! how i wish...)
Actually autumn is not my favourite season of all. I choose to experience winter than autumn. Somehow or rather, I have to admit that this poem makes me amuse by autumn. As I read it, I pray so hard in my heart that one day I will be given the opportunity to experience the real autumn in my most favourite country, Japan... =)

hi pn ju,
When I read this poem, I can feel the situations that john keats has created.
In this poem, John Keats writes about a typical day of this season, describing all kind of colourful and detailed images. Ripens the fruit of the vines, fruitful, the bees and etc. I never experienced autumn, but through this poem I can feel how’s autumn. I can imagine myself plucked apples, I can feel the wind lifting my hair. It was such a great feeling. This poem has evoked strong emotion in me. For me, this poem actually talks about the process of life. Autumn symbolises maturity in human and animal lives. Some instances of this are the ‘full-grown lambs’, the sorrow of the gnats, the wind that lives and dies, and the day that is dying and getting dark. As all we know, the next season is winter, a part of the year that represents aging and death, in other words, the end of life. However, in my opinion, death does not have a negative connotation because Keats enjoys and accepts ‘autumn’ or maturity as part of life, though winter is coming. And me myself really enjoyed this poem..

ReplyDeletezulaikha's here.
to autumn,
for me this poem is very nice and lovely as it describe autumn.
autumn is such a beautiful season and very calm. not too cold and not too warm.
this poem i could reflect it to myself. because, i think we have and need to appreciate what we have now. do not be to snobbish or arrogant because once we ignore or do not appreciate it we cannot get it back.
because after autumn is winter and most people do not like winter because it is so cold and winter i can relate to my carelessness or i can say it is my dark era. because when we always at the top, we never now how was at the bottom. once you at the bottom you will know how hurt it was. but as people always said, we learn from mistake because after winter there will be summer and that is when happy comes.
to autumn teach me how to appreciate what i have now and i can relate it to other seasons. this is such a lovely and as a reminder too... =)
thank you,

to me 'To Autumn' by John Keats really giving me the warmth feeling of autumn.
the way he describe the tree, the leaves, the fruit and the colours gives me an idea of how an autumn would be.
well as we all know we dont have the four season here in our country.
by reading this poem it makes me thinks about the beauty of the autumn itself, even though it does not last forever.
Keats actually gives his reader chances to embrace the beauty of autumn and feel the joy that he feels when he wrote this poem.

ReplyDeleteassalamualaikum and hi pn.ju =)
when i read this poem,1st thing that pop in my mind is the golden leaf falling slowly from a tree.
i feel calm and at ease when thinking about autumn. Because it's symbolize a phrase when one's life ended and another life will start.
even if i never felt the autumn, i imagine it as a delightful season. Its like i can feel the breeze blow through me and i feel alive.
even though the autumn supposed to mean that one's journey has come to an end, but when i read the poem..it give me the chill that the journey that ends will bring a new and more priceless journey into my life.
this poem also makes me think about many interesting experience that i will face in the future and i just can't wait for it.
i think thats all pn.ju..
see you next sem..
tq =)
OMG! Credits and thanks to Choong Wei Sam for reminding me of this!
ReplyDeletePn. Ju, I feel that autumn somehow left me as I come back here to Malaysia. After reading the poem, the imageries and figures of autumn expressed by Keats ignites back my long lost memories of autumn itself.
While going through the novel, I tried to refresh my first autumn in the UK. I was young, for all that I can remember was the cool breeze as I step out of the house and leaves are everywhere, making this crunchy noise as I step on it. I remember the squirrels there for how fat they were upon the trees. There is an event where my mother would take us out to the park and enjoy the sunset view * sadly, I can’t remember the name of that place*.
Keats pictures out the autumn as perfectly as autumn itself. Most people would not have the chance to feel the autumn, but by viewing this particular poem, and by chance watching Koreans dramas or any dramas in TV will get to know what autumn is about.
Many would say autumn is the age of maturity, growing older and etc… but judging from my personal experiences, I would say that autumn is the seasons for rest. Having a nice rest after going through the energetic spring and preparing for the cold harsh winter. Thanks to Keats’ poem ‘To Autumn’, I still hold on to the glimpse of memories that I would treasure for life.
In the end, everyone has their own autumn in their hearts, thus for me, I would just want to go and get that real feeling of autumn once more!
It is undeniable that every person has the right to seek for happiness in life. The ending of our life is unexpected therefore we need to live as happy as we could everyday. Now the only matter is that how do we define happiness. Does it mean that when we are satisfied with whatever we did then only the happiness come? Well the choice is always there for us to choose.
ReplyDeleteIn ‘The Awakening’, Edna is continually developing and growing, evolving and progressing. She is attracted to what is forbidden and begins her quest for personal satisfaction regardless any consequences that she may face. Her fantasies ride upon the shoulders of sexual and physical gratification and not on pleasing her husband or being a good mother. She is virtually powerless to any kind of seduction. Temptation of things forbidden is always on Edna’s mind.
We cannot blame Edna fully for her drastically changes. She just tries to find her own happiness. She is a woman trapped in the bounds of her society, her culture and her time. Edna marries a man her father approves of, has children her husband approves of and mimes a life society approves of. So everything had been setting for her without objection.
In my opinion, Edna chooses death. There are several reasons why she rather dies than carry on with her live which means nothing to her. Firstly, is the matter with her marriage. Her marriage to Leonce was “purely an accident”. Her father and older sister opposed her marriage to Leonce and this opposition naturally spurred her to marry him. She knew that her love for the tragedian was not of this world, and so she might as well be practical and dignified as the wife of a devoted husband. She put her romance away.
Secondly is the matter with her husband, Leonce. He is the typical blind husband who considers his family merely an extension of his material wealth. He sees his wife and children as prized possessions and does not engage with them very much. He does not understand Edna at all.
Thirdly is regarding to her children. Edna’s thoughts of her children inspire her to commit suicide, because she realizes that no matter how little she depends on others, her children’s life will always be affected by society’s opinion of her. Moreover, her children represent an obligation that unlike Edna’s obligation to her husband is irrevocable.
Another important reason why Edna chooses death is because of the man she falls in love with, which is Robert. The passion that Robert feels for Edna is not strong enough to join the lovers in a true in a true union of minds, since although Robert’s passion is strong enough to make him feel torn between his love and his sense of moral rectitude, it is not strong enough to make him decide in favour of his love. The note Robert leaves for Edna makes clear to Edna the fact that she is ultimately alone in her awakening. Once Robert refuses to trespass the boundaries of societal convention, Edna acknowledges the profundity of her solitude.
With the broken heart and the willing to be free from all the matters arise, Edna finally chooses death. She goes immediately to Grand Isle, for a quick swim, naked, but strikes out far into the ocean and gives herself over memories of her past life, and to drowning.
Thanks.

i dunno y but when i read this it reminds me of lake isle of innisfree..by butler yeats..
the feeling of reading it is the same...
so much with the nature...
what attracted me the most in this poem is its the imagery.....
keats has beautifully connected autumn with a girl..besides that most of us might think that autumn is actually a season dying..but he has put into words that autumn is alive..
when i experienced autumn..there were soooo many breath taking scenery..esp one i remember clearly...few rows of maple trees by the lake and there were swans too in the lake.....my god...i felt as though i was stucked into a postcard.. hehe...

ReplyDeleteTo be honest……I never experience autumn before…but the way Keat describe autumn as interesting and fun season make me relate it to my own experience of happiness. My idea of happiness is a little bit different from others. I find my happiness in pain….erm…… everybody must think that I’m crazy…..but….. I really find my happiness through pain n torture……confuse????hahah…actually I love martial arts soo much…..for me, martial arts is my autumn…..it is beautiful, unique and interesting… maybe some of you do not know that I am a former karatedo’s athlete….i have represented Terengganu before for this beautiful sport…….eventhough some people find this beautiful sport is torturing and not worth to participate but for me, this sport is interesting….. Just like keat, I have my own interpretation of “my autumn which is marcial arts”… keat in the other hand, has his own interpretation of autumn which he describe it as a lovely season instead of describing it as a season full of sadness which normally will be described for this season.

ReplyDeleteBefore I read this poem, the only thing I can associate with autumn is death as all the tress’s leaves are dropping. Dying away. Don’t get me wrong, I mean it is a very beautiful scene, but at the same time there is the atmosphere of sadness.
But after reading ‘Autumn’ by John Keats, I feel a sense of warmth and belonging. I have the feeling of coziness. Like when I am with my family before, during and after the Chinese new year.
Before Chinese new year, all the family members would gather around to clean the house, and like the bees busy doing their job to find food, ours is b t busy cleaning the house. And like the bees that feels like the honey is never ending, our chorus also feels like it’s never ending.
During the Chinese new year, everyone will definitely feel tired and will take this opportunity to rest. But when it is all over, we will all definitely feel sad as all the other family members from different states have to leave and only come back again during for the next Chinese new year.
This poem definitely makes me think twice about the opinion that I have once had for the season autumn.
assalammualaikum and hi puan ju..
ReplyDeletethis poem is basically about the change of a season..from summer to autumn.. yes.. to autumn, like the title..
like everyone said.. autumn is basically relates to the end of life..
but here, in this poem, keats make us reminisce about the beauty of autumn..
how is everyone deal with this season and how the nature change its colour is the beauty of autumn..
i myself never experience autumn like keats said in his poem.. yeah basically we could not see so much autumn in malaysia..just in few place..
growing in a city and in a place like "perkampungan nelayan" (used to be in the old time) make its hard to me to attach my soul to the poem.. but ive still can imagine what is autumn all about..
hope i will get an opportunity to experience the real autumn,so i could embrace the beauty of autumn.

Dear Pn Ju.
Autumn is not my favorite season. My favorite season is winter. I guess I just love the cold and the hot chocolate enjoyed near the fire place. (aah. in my dreams. haha (=,=)" )
True, the poet is actually trying to bring a new version of 'Autumn' in this poem. Autumn used to be relates to sadness, death, end, and dead ends.
But in this poem, it is different. The poet actually brings a new definition to the audience, and this is impressive, I must say. Autumn is described as something cheerful in this poem isn't it?
I, myself interprets Autumn as something which near to the end. In my opinion, if any season has to be related with rebirth or a new start, then it should be the spring.
However, I think Keats here is not actually referring Autumn as a complete way of a new start, but perhaps Autumn in this poem here symbolizes as a JOURNEY OF A NEW START.
and that, Pn Ju, is my point of view. :)
hello puan jue...its me salam..
ReplyDelete"To Autumn" when i first read this poem i think that keats imagine the autumn as an alive season where everybody imagine that autumn is a season where plants and animal start to falls and hiding prepared for the season but Keats create a poem with full of imageries which me my self can imagine it without experienced it on myself..
To Autumn is actually the ending of a season and get ready for the early autumn..we must get it clearly in our mind that this is the beauty Keats try to told us..
the beauty of "to autumn" Flowers, bees, apples, hazel nuts...the beauty of the season cannot be merely described with simple words..
nature is the best thing i ever had in my life...i felt so calm when i faced nature... to me the beautiful scenery and the perfect creation makes everythings goes perfect...
"to autumn" makes me feel so relax and i can imagine the atmosphere..to autumn means the end of the summer and its come the autumn where nature cycle nicely which we cant even imagine how God create those beautiful things...

ReplyDeleteNever been to any country, or any place which has the season of autumn, hence, I have no choice but to close my eyes and recollect all the autumn images I can gather, to feel what it is like during autumn—the mists, yellow fruitfulness, perhaps apples everywhere.
Autum didn’t remind me of any places in particular; but it does remind of the special hour of the day- dawn. The reason I could relate autum to dawn mainly because it signifies the end of a season, a year, or in my case, a day. I love to look at the beautiful sunset of dawn-- momentary but worth waiting for.
Many would say autumn or fall implies death, the end of something. For me, it gives me hope, it makes me look forward. Like the saying goes—it’s not the end but just the beginning.
Even though the poem is the depiction of the progression of autumn, I somehow have to relate it to the swiftness of time. In short, good or bad, all things come to an end.
