Augosta Boal and His Ideas

There are just too many theater theorists whom we met this semester. Many of their ideas ,if we looked closely, are valuable for ESL classroom.
In this space I would like you to look at Boal's ideas on theater. What are his ideas and do you think these ideas are different from the ideas of other theater theorists? Which of his ideas in your opinion is beneficial for students, teacher trainees and teachers of ESL?

  1. Boal's idea in Theater of the Oppressed included ten different theater ideas that were versatile and one of a kind. Most of these had something to do with actor audience interaction throughout the play, and another way to put it would be.... audience would participate in the play with their opinions.

  4. One of the ideas presented in the Theater of the Oppressed is Image Theater, where actors/actresses portray their thoughts in concrete forms due to the lacking of language idioms. This idea is to help actors/actresses provide a clearer understanding to audience of their intentions when shown rather than told.

  5. Boal developed the idea of giving freedom to the audience to stop the performance and give their own ideas to change the performance the way they want it to be. But in order to do that, they must involve with the performance, meaning that they have to be on stage and act. This is Boal's idea on "Spect-actors".

  6. Augusto Boal, founder of Theatre of the Opressed is a series of theatrical analysis and critiques developed in the 1950s. Boal experimented with many kinds of interactive theatre to transform theatre from the "monologue" of traditional performance into a "dialogue" between audience and stage. This is similar to what has presented about Grotowski who was introduced to 'tearing down the iron curtain' by Eugenio Barba that allows interaction between the actors and audiences.

Boal come up with idea that basically emphasis on actor and audience interaction to reduce the gaps between the actor and the audience. Audience were given opportunity to find or create a solution and become more confidence to direct the direction of the play. This Boal’s idea on Simultaneously dramaturgy.

  9. Hi Puan Ju! :)

The major idea from Boal is the interactive process between actors and the audience. Audience is just not an audience but they become part of the play instead. It's mean that both parties play an important role towards the storyline of the performance.

  11. Boal created the Theatre of the Oppressed as a tool to allow those who feel powerless a way to express themselves. The most important element is the ‘spec-actor’, which are audience members who have the freedom to express their idea by participating in the drama or to just sit back and enjoy the drama.

Boal brings a new perspective to the world of theater. For him, audience does plays an important role towards the performance. The interaction between actors and audience gives an opportunity for the audience to express their opinion and to create their own storyline for the play itself.

  16. The Theatre of the Oppressed was found by Augusto Boal (16 March 1931 – 2 May 2009) in 1971 in Brazil. In this theatre, Boal emphasizes more on the audience. For Boal, ‘We are all theatre.’ Theatre is not only for certain people but for all – you can be the actor and also the audience. Boal thinks that one way theater such as monologue is unhealthy so he tries to transform it into dialogue which involves interaction between 2 people, the audience and the actor, also called interactive theatre.

The audience, instead of just sitting there watching the plays, they can give comments or suggestions for the plays. Boal mentioned that not all spectators will agree and satisfy with the plays. Maybe they have better ideas to add in with. In this situation, Boal encourages the spectators to voice out their ideas to the actors and they can even stop the action, coming on stage to replace the actors and play their own ideas.

By doing this, Boal believes that the spectators are actually explored, analyze, show and transform the plays to their reality life. They are observing and acting. Besides that, Theatre of the Oppressed gives opportunity to low self-esteem or powerless audience members to express themselves. The actors who perform the play might not have the experience in their life so they could not perform the best. That is why the spectators are important in the plays too. They can be the director of the plays. Boal’s theatre key is the ‘spect-actor’, which means an audience member who is welcomed onstage to take part in the play.

That's all from me. Thank you. =)

  18. Boal introduces the Image Theater where people learn to portray thoughts in a concrete form because of the lack of language idioms to describe a certain act. One who can demonstrate his or her idea provides a clearer understanding when shown rather than told.

  19. Boal came out with the idea of using the stage to empower the dis empowered whereby the oppressed can be comfortable in their own skin and act out without being afraid of the outcome because its not the reality.

  21. Hi Elisha,

I'm glad the things you do at the university are applicable to your classroom. I am thinking of crreating a space for my former students to give their feedback on their theater experience. You people will be doing me a favour as I would like to investigate the value of all the minor performances and ultimately the major performance. Thanks for dropping by.

  22. Hi TESL Rockers,

Major performance is out of the way. We still have unfinished business. Come on in ad give your respond on Boal's work. What do you understand about his brand of theater. I would like you to go a step further by analysing his idea and discuss in what way his ideal is applicable to language classroom.

Like everyone mentioned, Boal is all about audience being very much involved in the theater. The gap between audience and performers is made very small that the audience can stop the performance anytime they want and interject their opinion, or even go up the stage and take over a role or even to teach the actor to how it should be done. Otherwise, the whole performance is paused to get the opinion of the audience to determine the next step of the performance, the move after the act of oppression.

So, basically it is the involvement of the audience in the performance.

On the side, it is also to encourage people to speak out, speak out their ideas whether it is different, controversial or other suggestions. It is also to instill the knowing that people have a say in things and they should speak up. Although there are some people who consider this as an encouragement to rebellion and upheaval.

In terms of application to language classrooms, what first came into my mind is that perhaps students will be more involved in the teaching session. To apply it directly, perhaps during a reading comprehension class, students are free to speak up in class and give their view or opinion of how a story should turn out or what a character is supposed to do. This will be opportunities for students to engage in their creativity and imagination. This will also be opportunities for them to practice their speaking in the target language.

(I am not sure language classroom includes literature so I would go with "no" for now and it is purely on language as in grammar, reading, speaking, listening and etc.)

Since Boal's idea is mainly the audience being involved with the process, activities where students can be involved in the teaching process where they do play a role can be:
    - narrative essay writing, teacher gives a starting sentence and let students continue, doing it together as a class on the board, generating ideas for the story line then later writing them in proper complete sentences individually.
    - studying a comprehension passage, let students role play the happenings in the passage and let students interpret and discuss how to best express what is being done/happening in the passage.
    - in a speaking class, students are given roles to play and other students are free to join in or interrupt to give opinions or constructive criticisms.

So these are what I can come up with which I just give a shot but not sure if it is entirely correct. Do correct me if I am wrong. :)

    God bless.

  27. I see similarities between Boal's idea - no boundaries between audience and actor and Grotowski's idea on 'tearing down the iron curtain'. Both ideas encourage involvement and communication between actor and audience.

In relation to language classroom, both ideas can be applied as in diminishing the boundaries/gaps between teachers and students. Traditionally, a teacher-centred or an authoritative apporach was used in the language classroom which did not promote involvement of students. But now with the concept of 'teaching as performing arts', it brings the gap between teachers and students closer to each other.

Teacher facilitates while the students take responsibility of their learning. This is somewhat similar to what others have mentioned here that Boal encourages the involvement of audiences(students). They can give comments on how the play should be or even stop the actors(teachers)and play their ideas. I see Boal's giving audiences roles to play as if students are given autonomy in their learning.

I am not sure whether the way I connect Boal's idea with the language classroom is relevant but this is the realization I had when I was in the shower and also because I am particularly fond of Grotowski's idea on iron curtain. This is why I relate it with Boal's idea which I find both ideas are similar.

I have to apologize for my late comment here. I have commented earlier but only recently found out that it was not published possibly due to the poor connection of uspot.

  30. Assalamualaikum w.b.t Madam Ju....

I'm so sorry for posting my comment very3 late...

Actually about Boal that I can say after my reading....Boal had proposed two types of theatre...one is theatre of the oppressed and legislative theatre...

but now we are talking about Theatre of the Oppressed... this theatre is actually proposed for the audiences to get involved in the play... we can see this in the word of spectators become spect-actors... so, theatre of the oppressed want to vanish the gap between the audience and the actors... there is no more boundaries between these two... he also applied this theatre when he used to be someone important in the society... so, he asked from the citizen what they wanted from the government... those who are using this theory, they will involve the audiences as the actors themselves, as the props and many more.... if the actors don't know how to solve the conflict, the audience can help the actors to solve it...

for me, this kind of theatre can make people to think more and we also can learn for not being so selfish, what we can learn from here also, share something that we know to others...

his ideas are different from other theorist. others just focus more on props, emotions, movements and so on. but Boal, he thought different ways....he thought that more ideas are better in order to improve the play and to build the characters so that the audiences satisfied because they are involving in the play making....

For students, teachers and teachers trainees, they can use this theory in their teaching and leaning process.... make the students think more rather than just spoon feeding...

i think that is all from me and this is what I understood from my reading because the main idea is there is no more boundaries or gaps between the actors and the audiences.... =)

    thank you...
