she has a dilemma in her romantic life. she loves other man more than she loves he own husband. and the feeling leads her to committing an adultery. what she had done cannot be undone and it was a huge mistake for society in particular and the religious views as well. However, she managed to clear his name from negative things people throw on her towards the end when the minister confessed the sin.
*Dimmesdale(romanticism&naturalism)
he is having the same feeling like Hester. he is different only because he is the angelic figure that people see him to be. he knew he was wrong but he couldn't do anything. he felt guilty and how he wished to admit the guilt to the people so that the punishment would not be only for Hester. but finally, he let others know the truth before he died and the confession has made a difference in Hester's life onwards.

in other parts, I felt sorry to him as he is being cheated and humiliated as a husband. but to me, we have rights to choose what and how we want our life to be. what hester has done is not right in the sense of her betraying her own man. but the failure of something must have it own story behind it. we don't do things for nothing. the failure of love life to work on will lead to this matter.betraying someone is a sin. but finding something that makes us alive and happy? there's nothing wrong with it.

Hester, the main character in this novel had faced many dilemmas in her life. Firstly, it is the marriage with Chillingworth which was legal in every way but without love and passion. This made Hester commit adultery. However, in Hester's eyes, it is not a sin and she's proud of it. She only wanted the affection which was burning up in herself for a long time.
Besides that, another dilemma she faced it that she had to keep a secret of her partner in sin because he holds a respected position in the puritan society. Although the society hatred was there she was strong , independent , principled individual, determined in going through her life.
Dimmesdale ( Naturalism, Romanticism)
Dimmesdale is a minister and is considered to be the pure, not sinful , therefore he refuse to tell the truth to the society. Besides, his greediness and selfishness made him not to tell the truth. He wanted to choose the power that he had than share the guilt with Hester. However, he couldnt keep the guilt feeling that he had and at the end he told the truth and took Hester and Pearl along with him with the society observing.
Chillingworth ( Naturalism )
I feel Chillingworth has been the victim of circumstances which unfortunately couldnt be avoided. He cant be blamed. The dilemma that he has to go through is that he had become obsessed with revenge, and this deadly sin has changed him considerably. He wanted to take revenge on Dimmesdale for not confessing his mistakes and putting all the sufferings to Hester.
Besides that, another dilemma that he faced is that Hester didnt loved him all this while. He was in a way cheated by Hester. All that happened was not CHillingworth's fault. It was destiny that made things like that.
For Hester, I would say that she is brave and optimistic in handling her problems (Romanticism and Feminism). She doesn’t even care for the others’ opinion about her, she wears the Scarlet Letter as a fashion and she did not hide it. This is because she is brave enough to admit her sin. Besides that, she is brave in showing her love towards Dimmesdale as she refused to name the father of the child, Pearl on the scaffold. After the scaffold, she managed her life by her own, becoming a seamstress.
ReplyDeleteDimmesdale is naturalist as he cares about the society’s opinion about him. As a priest, he is being looked up as a role model and yet he has adultery with Hester. In my opinion, he is a coward as he is not a man. A man should be protecting the woman that he loves no matter what but he didn’t do that but let Hester suffers alone. At last, he gathered up his courage to admit his sin.
To me, Chillingworth is a naturalist too as he is ashamed towards Hester and did not recognized her as his wife when she is at the scaffold. “Breathe not, to any human soul, that thou didst ever call me husband!” this is what he told Hester when he met her. He tried to seek revenge for the sake of Hester by trying to find out who is the father of the child, Pearl.

Hester’s dilemma revolves around her past and her present. She is haunted by her long lost husband, her new life as the mother to Pearl, and her decision in keeping secrets about Dimmesdale and Chillingworth for more than seven years.
Hester has a very strong characteristic. Though she is being punished and humiliated by the society, she remained calm and composed. She is not easily threatens by the society and stay strong with her decision in keeping the identity of Pearl’s father as a secret. Though part of her feels guilty for committing the adultery, she is also proud with Pearl, and sees her daughter as a gift from the God. In addition, she is independent, taking care of Pearl all by herself without help from a husband. She also represents naturalism where it is a natural for a woman like Hester to feel lonely after being separated with her husband for months without anyone to take care of her. Romanticism in Hester is shown when she meets Dimmesdale in the wood, giving him a mental support and confesses her love to the guy even though they are separated for seven years.
Dimmesdale (Naturalism, Romanticism)
Living a life as a clergyman, Dimmesdale is torn between his love and his position as a highly respected public figure.
Romanticism in him is shown as his love for Hester is genuine, and it hurts him to see Hester goes through the punishment alone while his identity is securely kept by Hester. The guilt that haunts him made him injured himself by carving a letter A on his chest. He even goes to the scaffolds secretly to feel Hester’s shame and humiliations. Like Hester, he can also represent naturalism. It is understandable to see him feeling guilt for what he had done, but at the same time, he pretends like he is not involved with Hester’s adultery. He has to think about his status as a clergyman in the society; a rank which Puritan people highly respected.
Chillingworth (Naturalism)
Obviously, naturalism suits him the best. It is natural for a husband to feel furious and disappointed upon learning that his wife committed adultery while he is away. In a way, I sympathized with him. Though he is plotting a revenge on both Hester and Dimmesdale, there is still love towards Hester in him. It’s hard for him to take his revenge on Dimmesdale without hurting Hester in the process. And when Hester refuses to reveal the identity of Pearl’s father, he realizes that Hester never loves him from the very beginning. It fuels up his angst towards Dimmesdale, making him losses his common sense and focuses on his revenge towards the couple.

In the novel, we could see that Hester is a strong figure of woman. Although she commits adultery, she wears the scarlet letter as it is a symbol of her proud. Not only that, she shows her love and loyalty towards Dimmesdale as she refused to give the name the father of the child. She keep living with the sin she committed until Dimmesdale confess the truth later on.

He is a priest, a role model for the people and the person who is closest to God. Because of this, he does not tell to people that he is the one who committed adultery with Hester. As a respected man, he cares what will happen to him if he confesses the truth. In my opinion, he is irresponsible to let Hester suffer alone from the sin that they commit together. However, he confesses the truth at last.

Chillingworth is the most unfortunate. His wife committed adultery while he was away from her and he found out that his wife does not love her. She bore the plight all alone; the utter degradation that reaped from Puritans’ commotion. Adorning the letter ‘A’ on her bosom, she gradually put aside her guilt and seemed to be proud of what she has done. All I can say Hester is a determine woman; she knows what she is doing and is willing to face the music. She even defended her right to love and to be loved which she didn’t get from her husband Chillingworth.
2. Dimmesdale (naturalism)
He is a Minister and people have high respect on him. He is seen as revered, pure and as a role model in the society. Due to his high position, he refuses to confess his despicable deed with Hester and the blame is solely put on Hester. Not wanting to mar his reputation, Dimmesdale prefers to keeping mum over the issue and at last he gathers all his strength to tell the truth.
3. Chillingworth (naturalism)
I think Chillingworth is also a naturalist whereby he espouses the nature of leech. He was a difficult husband who ignored his wife; Hester and yet, expected her to nourish his soul with affection. He took revenge againts Dimmesdale once he knew that he was the father of Pearl. However, Dimmesdale’s confession has somewhat made him loosing clutch at Hester and eventually led to his demise.

Even though we do not know why yet, the early chapter in the book does suggest that, prior to her marriage, Hester is a woman who is impetuous and has a strong-willed. She remembers her parents as loving guides who frequently had to restrain her incautious behavior. The fact when she has an affair also suggests that she once had a passionate nature. Throughout the story, Hester also portrays the nature of a lonely woman who is desperate because of living without husband around and care about her. She needs someone who can accompany her like Dimmesdale.
Hester’s dilemma revolves on her daughter, Pearl. Pearl is the part of her guilt on adultery with Dimmesdale yet she still feel very proud of having Pearl along her side. This is because Pearl being sees as a gift from God to Hester. Although she being punish and humiliated by the Puritans yet she still bring up the responsibility to take care of Pearl. Hester moderates her tendency to be rash, for she knows that such behavior could cause her to lose her daughter, Pearl. She also shows feminism when she care about the poor and give them food to eat.
Hester also shows her Romanism when she having a talk with Dimmesdale in the forest. She gives her mental support to him and confesses the love towards him at the same time.
2. Dimmesdale (Naturalism, Romanticism)
Dimmesdale was a scholar of some renown at Oxford University. As a person who is well educated and lives a live as a clergyman, he is being looked up as a role model of the society of Puritans. When Hester being accused adultery, he dare not speak out for her because he cares about the perspective of society towards his status. He portrays Romanism because his love towards Hester is genuine yet he being binds his respectful position. He feel guilty inside his heart yet he acting like coward who afraid of how society will look at him if he admit that he is man who involve in adultery with Hester.

3. Roger Chillingworth (Naturalism)
There is no doubt to claim that Roger Chillingworth portrays the element of protecting his own wife in nature. He feels angry and frustrated when he found out that his wife committed adultery while he is not around. Yet, he still need the revenge for his wife to found out who is the guy who had make him so embarrass. To a certain extent, he wants to revenge and protect his wife, yet, he also portrays true evil. He ignored his wife for much of the time, yet expected her to nourish his soul with affection when he did condescend to spend time with her. His twisted, stooped, deformed shoulders mirror his distorted soul.
In my opinion, Chillingworth is a sad character who never had his love from his own wife. He suffers more when he knows Hester undergo the adultery and even protect the man who had an affair with her. He knows that man is Dimmesdale actually but he wants Hester admits that yet she refuse which bring him to a deep evil revenge.

Throughout the novel, Hester is a character of an independent and strong woman. Even though she has been sentenced for committing adultery and get pregnant without her husband around, she accept the punishment not as if she was at fault. She was forced to wear the scarlet letter of “A” at her boson everyday which means for adultery but she designed it so that it will look classy and she wore that letter with proud just like she has done nothing wrong. Besides that, she is faithful towards Dimmesdale and refused to reveal the name of the father of her child to the public even though she was cursed and insulted. This shows hwo far she would go to protect her child and her lover’s name.
Dimmesdale (Naturalist)
Dimmesdale is living the life of a public figure. As a priest, the society look upon him and he need to maintains his image in front of the society. As an important man in the society, he is irresponsible towards Hester because he does not want to admit that he has commited adultery with Hester and got her pregnant their child. At last, he cannot bear the burden that he shoulder he finally admitted to the public that he is the father of that poor child.

Chillingworth is the husband of Hester, after he found out that his wife was punished for committing adultery while he was away he ask Hester not to reveal that he is her husband and he tries to ask Hester who is the father to Pearl. He was ashamed of Hester acts and tries to seeks revenge to find the one who was Hester lovers.

ReplyDeleteshe lets her love controls her, and not her duty as a wife. that is why she chose Dimmesdale over Chillingworth. she is passionate but also strong. in the story, she endures years of pain and shame. she is not like any other woman in the story. everyone else detest her for commiting adultery, yet she doesn't really care about it.

as the role model of the people and an important figure, he must take care of his attitude very well. yet what he had done had only bring greater burden to Hester. if he had confessed his adultery earlier, things would have changed to the better. however, finally he admit his guilt and this had definitely turned him from an irresponsible man to a better person.

he is a difficult husband. he ignored his wife for quite a long time, yet he expected her to give him her full affection. his decision to assume the identity of a 'leech' is fitting. after Dimmesdale dies, Chillingworth no longer has a victim. having lost the objects of his revenge, the leech has no choice but to die. he is also associated with secular and represents true evil.

Hester is a strong and independent figure for as long as she suffer along the story. However, she never reveals about it and she keep it just like there is nothing happen for her. The pregnancy, adultery and all these have never let her moral down and she happens to stand up with her own word not to tell the father of the child. Indeed, she also is a strong mother who really cares about her own daughter.
2. Dimmesdale (Naturalist, Romanticism)
A priest, a respectable figure but committed sin ? For me, as long he committed the sin but he still in people's heart, he will stay as a respected man. But one thing at first, he act no responsible towards Hester and her pregnancy but finally as a noble person and stand in his faith, he knows the burden and how Hester has sacrifice along this while therefore he shows up to reveal that he is the father of Pearl without hesitate what are the people going to say about him.
3. Chillingworth (Naturalist)
A husband of Hester but full of anger and revenge after knowing what was happen. Maybe this act comes from the tribe he's in after a while but why he happen to send her wife first and why he did not travel with her? This shows there is no sense of secure towards his family. All he has to do is to revenge and reveal who is the father of Pearl.

In the novel and the movie I read and watch, Hester is a strong,brave women. Having committed adultery, she still wore the scarlet written letter 'A'. Brave enough to admit her sin and keep secret her partner-in-adultery even though she had to face the punishment alone. Not only that, she shows her love and loyalty towards Dimmesdale, as she refused to give the name the father of the child. She keep living with the sin she committed until Dimmesdale confess the truth later on, when she almost receive the punishment death mandatory.
2) Dimmesdale (Naturalist)
Being a priest, a role model to the society, a clergy man, and committed a sin, a big sin, adultery, will forever demolish his reputation and status in the community. That why he didnt admit he was the father of April. A selffish man, unreliable person in my opinion. But his love towards Hester was so strong and pure(?). And at last, he confessed to the society that he is the father to April.

He left her wife for a quite long time just to know that Hester has committed adultery but she did not reaveal the father to him. He planned to take revenge after that, Derived from the anger and hatred, he has turned into an evil man and solely focussed iinto the revenge.

Hester, the main character of the novel has faced some dilemmas in her life which affect her life becomes miserable and sufferable. First of all, she has cheated her husband, Roger Chillingworth while he is away from out of nowhere and committed a sin by having an affair with other man. Even though she is a married woman, she still commits adultery because of her marriage lacks of love and passion yet she feels lonely after being separated with her husband for months without anyone to take care of her. In her eyes, it is not a sin and she is proud of it. On the other hand, after being punished and humiliated by the Puritan society, she still keeps strong and patient facing her life. She has to keep the identity of her sinner partner because she wants to show her loyalty towards her partner and realizes that her partner is the person who holds a high position in the society. In addition, when her husband wants to know who the real father of the child is, she refuses to tell the name of the father. This is only the way that she could do for her partner to show her love towards him.
Reverend Dimmesdale (Romanticism & Naturalism)
Dimmesdale is considered as a role model of Puritan society because he holds a high position as a minister, the person who is really closer to God and the society respect on him very much. Unfortunately, he falls in love with the marriage woman, Hester and commits adultery with Hester. Consequently, he does not admit the sin to the society, only Hester does. It shows that Dimmesdale is a coward person because he pretends himself that he is not a sinner and lets Hester herself suffering alone. Because of his selfishness and greediness, this will lead him not telling the truth. He chooses the power rather than share the guilt with Hester. At the end, he admits his sin.
Roger Chillingworth (Naturalism)
Chillingworth is the most unfortunate person because his wife cheats him by having an affair with other man. ReplyDeleteThe most striking features who really highlights the issue of Romanticism are Hester Prynne and Mr. Dimmesdale. Hester Prynne is a rare romantic creature ever existed in that particular era. Hester sets her own principles through challenging marriage she had gone through with old Roger Chillingworth (Roger Prynne. As she claimed to Mr. Chillingworth, she has grown wiser, and no longer a child he once married, indicates that Hester Prynne is a firm person who is willingly to fight for whatever purposes she may think right in her life. I might say she is a strong and brave young woman by nature from the veru first day she moved to that puritan place. She does what puritan male do and firmly restate her mind whenever they want to stop Hester. From many instance in the novel Hester Prynne is portrayed as a firm and cold hearted person and yes, she symbolizes Romanticsm feature in the novel. Unlike Hester, in my opinion Dimmesdaly does not deserve to be addressed as Romanticsm feature for the reason he is at Hester Prynne's mercy. Well, I do not deny his genuine and pure love towards Hester, but I would like to raise a question here, Why does he need to wait for seven years, to gather enough courage and guts to finally reveals hilself as the fellow sinner to Hester Prynne? As we know Hester does not unfolr the secret till very end but Dimmesdale. Therefore, if Dimmesdale is to label as a romantic person, heavy hearted I would do that. For that reason I would rather say Dimmesdale is more a naturalist and less Romantic for the fact he takes seven years to be the man of Hester Prynne and the father of Pearl.
Feminism is another crucial issue that we should not missed out. Again, Hester Prynne has become the inspirational to the Puritan women to speak their own mind and not easily bend to mens' commands. As we know puritan is the extremist and locate women in poor position. Women in that particular era were not given appropriate room to express their opinion and obviously be discriminated. Hester Prynne appears as someone who against any discrimination towards women and firmly voicing out her feminist view. Despite unfair atmosphere puritan create, I am somehow glad that they do not separate Hester Prynne from Pearl and let them both lead their usual life. It shows that even though male puritan are extremist but at certain points they can be rational and tolerable when it comes to motherhood issue.
No doubt the best naturalist in the novel is Roger Chillingworth. He holds on to several principles he nurture from the tribe he lived in and he is so much influenced by the beliefs. As former husband to Hester Prynne, he is undoubtly against to sinful act Hester commited. Therefore he promises to himself and Hester to seek revenge once he knew the man. The belief is nurtured during his temporary experience in the Indian tribe. He was taught to not tolerate with human sinful act done to other human. In this case, Hester is sinful to Roger for cheated and betray him. It explains why Roger promised to seek revenge but not to Hester, but to the unknown man.
Romanticism, Naturalism and Feminism are three issues well highlighted in discrete manner but well portrayed throughly through out the novel. Classic and a must read novel Scarlet Letter is, a lesson to everyone of us no surely.

She is truly a strong woman in the perspective of a person called woman. She suffered pain and shame for many years just because of her passionate love. As she was accused to have an affair with Dimmesdale she still protects him in the name of love. She can survive and stand on her own although the Adultery is her main problem.

As a noble and a respected person in the society, he refuses to admit for his own sin. An important figure to society must not commit a big sin as adultery. His status of a respected person is the most important thing to hold on rather than admitting his sin. By doing that, the burden of shame and pain lay only to Hester. He is the man of coward and selfish but in the end he admit the sin and become a better person.
Chillingworth (Naturalist)
As a husband, he feel that he have the right to take revenge and to feel anger as he know the story of his own wife having an affair with another man. The affair of his wife reflect to the relationship between he and his wife, but this all make sense when he himself traveled without his wife, a wife without her husband can be searching for satisfaction. The revenge leads him to evilness.

With full of dignity and pride, she did not stay back and hide but instead, she appeared in front of others and wearing the scarlet letter. Although Dimmesdale did not help her in fighting with the society’s perception, she alone can stand and face the society. Although she knew that she commited an adultery but she think that by falling deeply in love with someone, that adultery is not a sin but a right thing to do between two people who felt in love with each other.

For fear losing his power and influence in the society, he keep the secret about him and Hester from the others and let Hester face the society alone. He care for his status more than he care about his love/lust toward Hester because he knows that, once the society knew about the truth, he will lose the power and influence in the society and it may make him like a common people.

lets talk about Hester first who represents romanticism and feminism in the novel. she is a very brave and determine character for willing to face all the consequences from committing adultery with Dimessdale. she remains silent from telling anyone about her partner of the sin just to keep Dimmesdale's reputation as a minister of the town remains intact. this already shows how romantic she is. she did gain her strength by all this predicaments and she finally evolve to a very feminist character who prove that she could live without a man.

completely typical man who finds that revenge is crucial to be accomplished in life. being in captivity of the tribe may tune him to act like he acted, revenge is a great tool to express dissatisfaction towards others. if he could think more rationally he might not be doomed as he is in the novel. sometimes wise action is better than strength.

All three characters, Hester, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth face dilemmas that are rooted in the same source – the sin of the former two. Unlike each other however is the position they’re in and how they deal with it.

As the protagonist of the novel, Hester is a much discussed character. While most see her solely as a Romantic figure, I beg to differ. In my opinion, Hester is a representation of all the 3 isms mentioned. She is by large a Romantic figure, but at the same time, she is also a feminist as well as a naturalist. By feminist, it is clear to us that she stands out and up as a woman who believes strongly in herself. Though recognized as a flawed woman in the oh-so-perfect Puritan book of law, Hester did not allow herself to succumb to what they dictate of how a woman should act. She bravely defended her rights to be a woman to give birth and raise her child despite it being a product of a sinful act – as dictated by the Puritans. From a naturalist’s point of view which focuses on depicting an accurate version of ‘real’ life, Hester is one who adheres to this isms’ central belief that human beings is governed by larger forces. This force, in her case however, does not refer to the Puritans’ law, but the law of nature – of evil, of defiance or in a more positive light, to love and be loved. Hester allowed herself to commit such adultery out of her love for Dimmesdale. Likewise, she defied the law of her society as a submission to her nature of a human desiring love and therefore adhered to it by raising their product of love as a continuation of life.
Yet, though both a feminist and naturalist, it is by her Romantic attributes that she resolved her dilemma more determinedly. Romanticism declares a Romantic figure to be one who pursues his/her own path despite all things or in other words, heroically individualistic. Undoubtedly, Hester did just that. She dared to be different from her staunch Puritan society by raising Pearl, child of her adulterous act. When faced with the dilemma of revealing her lover’s identity at the scaffold and to Chillingworth, she held true to Romanticism and refused resolutely to do so. She was determined to keep the secret for as long as she is able to. Similarly, she was determined to stay in the same place that had condemned her of her sin. “…it may seem marvelous that this woman should still call that place her home, where and where only, she must needs to be the type of shame.” Also, she kept the scarlet letter on her bosom. It was a pride to her, so she claimed, unwaveringly. In fact, what is adulterous and sinful to others is what she is proud of despite the isolation from them. She stood firm for love, her only happiness and joy.

Like Hester, Dimmesdale committed a sin condemned by the Puritan society. However, the difference that sets them apart is their status in the society. Dimmesdale is a minister, a young preacher whose eloquent and powerful sermons is widely recognized to be the most meaningful spiritual guidance. He is a naturalist by nature for he conforms to the physical law of the Puritans, unlike Hester. He lived up to what Puritans deemed a righteous man. In fact, he was a role-model to the rest of them. Yet, such idolization of him was what drove him to further internalize the guilt he withheld from the public and hence punished himself both physically and psychologically. As the story progresses, Dimmesdale, from a naturalist began converting to a Romanticism, though subtly, but determinedly. The first instance occurred at the second scaffold scene where he confessed his guilt out loud though still fearing to be heard. It was dark and hence none heard him. However, it was a sign of change. He was trying to resolve his dilemma. The peak of his convert comes at the third and final scaffold scene where he lets go of everything; pride and status to confess his sin and accept what he couldn’t seven years ago. It is thus clear that in regards to resolving his dilemmas, Dimmesdale hung on to the Romantic belief.

Though very much a follower of Naturalism, I find Chillingworth a tad bit Romantic too. He was a keen Puritan who stands up for righteousness. However, if Puritans dictate righteous acts and thoughts, then wouldn’t vengeance be a sin? As much as Chilingworth wants to ‘make things right’ so to say, he seemed to me, to be doing it the wrong way. For a husband to leave his wife alone in a strangers’ land was wrong from the beginning. Now that she has committed adultery, he seeks revenge on the man who had done so, instead of reflecting on the potential reasons it had happened. At his first encounter with Hester at the scaffold in the market place, he was shocked but very quickly disguised himself so as to understand the situation from other townspeople. When he eventually found out, he swore to seek this man of sin for vengeance. He was a seemingly plain yet complex character having that of a Naturalistic and Romantic attitude. From a Naturalist view, he was abiding to both the law of man and nature. He wanted to fight for what he deemed righteous by the law of man. However, as mentioned earlier, vengeance is sin. Therefore, how could it be equated as righteousness? It should be instead the law of nature – evil in every man. It seemed somewhat conflicting for Chillingworth both abided and defied the law of man. Nonetheless, it is clear to me that he is a bit of both.

Hester is a romantic figure in this novel. She defies society's norms and stands out like a sore thumb all for the sake of love. Her love is a sacrificial kind of love which expects nothing in return. Evidence of this is in the way she stood firm to not revealing the father of the baby. Furthermore, a romantic figure is one who does not bother about society's views. Hester demonstrates such a character when she proudly displays the scarlet A on her chest without so much as a hint of embarrassment. Her act of defiance was done without reproach, at least on her side.
She is also a feminist as she is very independent and headstrong. Hester works hard to earn her own living for Pearl and herself by becoming a seamstress. Besides that, her feminist character is evident in her bold move of moving to a new land without her husband. Truly, Hester is a bold and independent woman of the Puritan era.
Dimmesdale (Naturalist)
He's too concern with what people thinks of him that he rules out any hint of romanticism in him. Therefore, I classify Dimmesdale as one of the proud, arrogant, status-conscious male chauvinist in the Puritan society. He's so caught up with maintaining his status in public that he doesnt even bother to care for Hester or their illegitimate daughter. Being a priest, he is a walking contradiction of who he should really be - a morally upright person. The conflicts and dilemmas faced by Dimmesdale would be the constant fear that his act of adultery will be exposed. Therefore, since he is so affected by the society's rules and standards, it's only appropriate to say that Dimmesdale is in fact a Naturalist.

Chillingworth represents yet another irresponsible male character in this novel. I think a large part of the act of adultery was his to blame - for ignoring and leaving his wife in a foreign land all alone to fend for herself. His conflict and dilemmas arise when he returns to find his wife committing the sinful act of adultery. It made him angry that he refused to admit her as his wife anymore. Therefore, Chillingworth is also a naturalist, as he acts in accordance to the norm of society - his natural reaction of anger and shame for having Hester as his wife.

Eventhough she committed adultery with Dimmesdale, she still thinks that she is innocent. That's what a true love would stand for. The Scarlett Letter that she has to wear seems like her proud to show off to the people. She doesn't care of having the embarrassment in front of the public because she knew herself better and thought of nothing but love. When the crowds were asking about the father of Pearl, she didn't tell them because of her loyalty towards Dimmesdale. She holds the burden by herself until in the end, Dimmesdale confessed about his adultery with Hester. This clearly shows that Hester represents the Feminism.

When a priest has committed adultery, by all means, he has to be punished and people around him would think of all bad things towards him. However, for Dimmesdale, because he is so eager to protect his name from being tarnished by the society, he didn't tell the public that he has committed the biggest crime ever, and what's worse, a priest has committed an adultery. He can be seen as a weak character as he didn't have the guts to tell people that he was wrong and let Hester suffer alone from the embarrassment and the bad treatment from the society. Eventhough he confessed the truth in the end, he's still a one irresponsible person. He is a Naturalist.

A Naturalist would be the best to describe Chillingworth's characteristics. When he was away, his wife committed adultery with a new guy and because of that, he wanted to seek revenge and find who is the father of Pearl. There is no question about how mentally strong this lady is. I believe when other women were in her condition, they will have mental sickness, no doubt, but she was not. Wearing the letter ‘A’ for adultery was not something shameful. She did not care what the society says, she just becoming stronger while Dimmesdale’s spirit wanes. Plus she is proud to wear it!

Having a story written back to year 1840, there will be always same social issue being raised by the writers, gender inequality. Society tends to look down on women and it occurred in the story too. Dimmesdale in the story is an intelligent man. He is the scholar at Oxford University. In the story, he and Hester become lovers, which lead to the crisis when Hester is giving a birth to his child. Even though he is also guilty, the punishment only goes to Hester. He is feeling guilty but in order to save his reputation, he has to pretend he is doing nothing wrong.

I admire her affection towards Dimmsadel. She knows public pays reverently to his piousness. A important public figure, she understand his dignity as the public thus no revealing his identity to the public which he could lose his title and bring shame.

Chillingworth is a man of good nature but turn to the dark side when he go to seek revenge. He had used his knowledge of medicine as a platform for his revenge when he had performed witchcraft and committed murder. Through out the plot, she at first symbolizes immorality in society but as the story progress,all eyes start to put respect on her. Dimmesdale is a venerative character. He is being looked high-upon by the society
for he is a minister & a scholar who is suppose to never commit any wrong doings nor
impeccable behaviors. Although he is being seen as such, it has never prevented him from
committing adultery with Hester. Later when the news of such indecent act has leaked
among the society, he refuses to admit it because naturally a minister must never do such
things and will never override the rule given by God. He thinks that even if he had commit a sin,
he cannot reveal it to the public for he is venerated upon although at last he finally tells the truth.
Chillingworth (naturalism)
Chillingworth is a multifaceted character in a bad way. He is known for unloving and irresponsible husband to Hester.
I.e: Sent Hester to America but never made an effort to trace her back or made some follow-up about her for she is his wife!
When he had found her back and worse found her back together with some demoralizing rumors from the public that she had, had an
affair with Dimmesdale while he was gone and a daughter was born out of it.Chillingworth had reacted like a real-husband should; taking revenge on
someone who had demoralized your wife, but the point was, what he'd done out of it was useless.He was just wasting time, why on earth
would he care for someone he had taken for granted before (forever actually) & when she decided to go her own way, he acted like it was such a big deal
where else he could've let her go on her own.Maybe Chillingworth himself like to keep her with him so he could torment her under his claws forever

Throughout the novel, I can conclude that Hester is superordinary woman who can bear the dilemmas that happened to her. It is wrong to commit adultery. She admits that and she suffer and bear it alone. What more that she can do. Her husband left her for long time. Like other people she also has the desire to love and to be loved. She wore the scarlet letter ‘A’ as being proud, not as punishment. After committed the adultery she never revealed the adulterer until the priest confess himself. She was isolated by the society, however her determination to live and to take care the baby was so strong that made her live with proud.
Dimmesdale (Naturalism)
Dimmesdale is a priest and is considered as a very noble man. However he committed adultery and did not want to confess to the public. For me, he is like other people who only want power and money, and know nothing about people’s feelings. Although he is a priest, he should confess to the public. This makes Hester suffering alone with her new baby. At last, he could not bear the sin anymore and confess to the people. If he did that at first, he may lose his power, however Hester will not suffer alone and people may forget them as looking at Dimmesdale position as a minister.=)

Chilling worth is just as other people in the world. Who on earth will not be angry if his wife has affairs with others. When he came back to her, he realized that Hester committed adultery. As a man he feels challenged by Hester’s betrayal and wanted to revenge to the person who committed the adultery with her. However, he never thought the base of the conflict which is he never took care of Hester. Therefore, why should he come with vengeful spirit to kill the adulterer?

In her point view, there is no wrong in loving a man because she has long for love quite a long time when her husband left her. He is seen as a great figure of the society. The man who is looked up to and a pious man who is seem imposible to be doing such a sin. However, he did make the adultery with Hester. When Hester being judge at the scaffold, he just keeps quiet and cowardly see Hester being judge by the society. In my opinion, he is such a disgrace because he could not protect the women he love and put his pride of being a revenant a head than everything. But in the end he confess to the public as he cannot bear to see Hester’s suffering.

In my opinion, he does not have the right to take revenge on both Hester and Dimmesdale as he does not once play his role as a husband towards Hester. When he heard about the adulterous Hester his pride as a man is challenged and he want to take revenge and in the end he died.

As the consequence, Dimmesdale fell ill and lived in guilt. He was unable to neither speak out nor to keep it within him. Life became miserable to him.

Thus, Chillingworth inspected Dimmesdale and he was shocked to see the letter ‘A’ on the minister’s chest. The letter answered all his questions. Chillingworth planned to take revenge on Dimmesdale to overcome his anger and dissatisfaction. He pretended to cure Dimmesdale but the reality was he was making the miniter’s health deteriorate.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it is natural for a woman to be attracted to a man. In Hester case having an affair with the minister, we have to consider one thing. Hester is sent to another place by her husband without him following the wife.So, we can say that Hester is lonely without a man named as her husband by her side.A married woman need the husband to protect her. However, Chillingworth left his wife without taking care of her. The presence of Dimmesdale in Hester's life cheered her up. As a normal woman would be attracted by a man, she accidentally had an illegal relationship with Dimmesdale even though he is a minister. Attraction between a man and a woman does not consider your status. It comes naturally. That's why I would rather say the relationship between Hester and Dimmesdale is more on the natural way, not because of the romanticism.
Hester also being a feminist in standing by her own feet when the townspeople blamed her on her sen she had committed. She didn't left Boston even though she had the chance to do so. She is very determine in her way defending herself. She also being a responsible mother by bringing up Pearl although she is the child out of wedlock. Unlike many women now who like to throw away their illegal children, Hester took the responsibilities of her own wrongdoing. She also didn't point Dimmesdale for her having the child. She took it as her own punishment, not by the man who caused her to have the 'product.'

Unlike the relationship that Hester had with Dimmesdale I've mentioned above, I think Dimmesdale had a romantic relationship with Hester. He already knew that Hester is married but he had an affair with her because he can't stop himself from loving her.
Although he is a minister, he still has the intention towards women. We have to bear in mind that a normal person will be attracted to the opposite sex including Dimmesdale. In having the relationship with Hester, he didn't see himself as a minister. He would rather considered himself as a lover to Hester.
Chillingworth(Naturalism)
After knowing that his wife had an affair with the minister, he planned something to pay the revenge. Although he left his wife, he still feel that he has to protect his wife. So, he did the revenge when he cures Dimmesdale whenever he came for the treatment

Scarlet Letter! An interesting classic,i would say...HAving so much of dilemma from the start was what we saw when reading this novel...The three main characters,Hester,Dimmesdale ,& Chillingworth had many problems in themselves and also with other characters throughout the whole story.
ReplyDeleteHester whom is viewed from the Romanticism point of view...She was seen as a sinner by the town people for the act of adultery which has brought to the existence of the child ,Pearl,the result of her sin. Though she was isolated by the society for her sin, she was proud of the scarlet letter on her chest and she definitely took it as a challenge to go against all odds. She had the hope that her faith will change in time and it did as she went against all feminism views from people. She proved to be a strong woman though she was criticised .She did alot of social work and helped the poor that brought her into the image of someone who has a good heart.
Dimmesdale in another point was very much influenced by the naturalism view as he was very much secretive about his sin with Hester.HE was a minister who was respected by the people and he was forced not to reveal his sin ,n let Hester alone go through the humiliation because of the society's image over him.But at the end,Romanticism has brought little difference to what he felt about himself over the mistake he have done.He confessed in the end.
Chillingworth is a character who was not able to portray himself well with his duty as a husband till it has caused his wife to have an affair with another man.He left her alone in Boston and never brought her back.From the naturalism view,he had reacted mainly through the eye of society,he did not want to reveal his true identity because he did not want to be criticised as a sinner's husband and get the bad name because of his wife.He was very much revengeful to what have happened because of what people told about Hester,which he have heard of went she was out of the prison.
Basically,all these character has many conflicts in them .They managed to resolve it somehow.Hester did it by being selfless,being herself,helping people and being noble in her deeds to the society.Dimmesdale did it by confessing his guilt publicly before dying.Chillingworth ,he got his revenge with Dimmesdale's death who have slept with his wife and he eventually died with the knowledge of who the sinner was.

Chillingworth is a very unlucky man. Leaving Hester alone at home, she at last committed adultery with another man. Some maybe is his fault but the rest is Hester's fault. It changes him into a different man, lives only to seek revenge.

Hester faces dilemma in her romantic life. Hester was portrayed as scandalous women with no moral values. She commits sins by having affair with Chillingworth. Society never approves her affair. She has to wear a scarlet letter symbolizes A as adultery she commit. The other dilemma that Hester faces which is lead to her romanticism is when she hides the father of her child’s name. She does not worry about punishment and isolation that she has to face for her dirty secret. She can be seen as strong women because standing on her feet to face the society.

Dimmesdale commit adultery with Hester and that is his romanticism. He was a good priest but turn to be a sinner, which he is not supposed to do. His guilt and self-punishment are natural feeling face by all sinners. That is why Dimmesdale is considered as naturalism.

Dimmesdale is a naturalist where he, even though committed sins that would never be undone, has to appear 'sacred' in front of the townpeople. for him, being a leader, as a role model for other people, he has to meet with the townsfolk's expectation.
Chillingworth is also a naturalist in his own way. he actually is a character who tries to retrieve back what he has lost-his wife. and revenge it must be for the wife that abandon her responsibility towards her husband.
for me, Hester is a tough woman-strong outside, but fragile from her inside. she learns to forgive and forget sins that Dimmesdale and her have done and live with the community's isolation towards her. and she also bears the letter A that labelled upon her by the society.

She is an early feminist, demanding her rights as a woman and member of society. Hester proves the true power of the woman alone, she raises her daughter working hard to support her.

Dimmesdale is a hypocrite in that he preaches and urges people to be honest and godly when he himself is hidden in his sin. However, I hesitate to say that he is more than a hypocrite. Dimmesdale suffered a lot internally from his sins, and through his suffering he learned a lot. Hester learned her lesson through an early confession and sought atonement, while Dimmesdale learned his through suffering and despair, atoning at the end before his death. Dimmesdale chose not to confess because he was afraid of the public's opinionwhich is normal for anybody.
Chillingworth (Naturalism)
A harmless elderly man keen on helping a minister with his mental and physicalproblems, changes in a heartbeat to hatred and tormenting revenge. Roger's physical appearance gives the reader a very good understanding what he's thinking and what he is intent on doing. To begin with, his small, frail body gives an ideaof his age, and how "weak " he may be, yet he has an aura of intelligence surrounding himthat takes away the elderly feeling and adds a wise one.

The husband of Hester, he feels that he have the right to take revenge and to feel anger as he know the story of his own wife having an affair with another man. The affair of his wife reflect to the relationship between them. The revenge leads him to evilness.
