Greetings fellow puritans,
I saw various shapes of the letter A the other day.
In Scarlet Letter, we see the dynamics of the interpretations of letter A. Please take note of this dynamism.
On 18 August 2010 we saw 9 important scenes presented by you people in the class. Describe the scene that your group presented the other day.
(please post the presented scene first)
Fellow puritans,
Choose one scene that you think is the most important scene from Scarlet Letter. Defend your choice please!!
(Individual posting required here fellow puritans!!)
here is our chosen scene (chapter 18, page 152-153)
ReplyDeleteHester:let us not look back. the past is gone! wherefore should we linger upon it now? see!with this symbol, I undo it all, and make it as it had never been!
Hester: thou must know Pear! our little Pearl! Thou hast seen her-as, I know it! - but thou wilt see her now with other eyes. she is a strange child! I hardly comprehend her! But thou wilt love her dearly, as I do, and wilt to advice me how to deal with her.
Dimmesdale: Dost thou think the child will be glad to know me? I have long shrunk from children, because they often show a distrust-a backwardness to be familiar with me. I have even been afraid of little Pearl!.
Hester: Ah, that was sad! But she will love thee dearly, and thou her. she is not far off. I will call her. Pearl! Pearl!
Dimmesdale: I see the child. Yonder she is, standing is in a streak of sunshine, a good way off, on the other of side of the brook. So thou thinkest the child will love me?
This scene is important as Hester introduced Pearl to Dimmesdale. Pearl is the product of their love and therefore, Hester would like him to know who is his daughter.

ReplyDeletehye, again I think this scene from chapter 18 is important. in this scene, Hester introduces Pearl to her partner, the minister. to me, everybody cannot run away from doing mistakes. How bad and huge the mistake was,the question is just; how much effort we put to make the sinful deed falling into the right path again.
ReplyDeletein this case, Dimmesdale has to get to know his Pearl even closer and he himself should not take things easily. that would be unfair to a woman side. well, woman is always trying her best not to hurt others especially the one that she loves.
her action of introducing their product of love is really important so that the man will understand better and in a way to teach him how to be responsible for what they had actually done before.
both of them are the sinners and thus the two of them should bare with whatever consequences they may face after committing the sin.

ReplyDeleteHere is my group's chosen scene... Chapter 15
Hester and Pearl.
Hester : Be it sin or no.. I hate the man!. ' Yes I hate him!' He betrayed me! He has done me worse wrong than i did him! Pearl! Little Pearl! Where are you?
Pearl : I wonder if mother will ask me what it means ? ( dancing, laughing, and pointing her finger to this ornament upon her bosom.)
Hester : My little Pearl the green letter and on thy childish bosom, has no purport. But dost thou know my child, what this letter means which thy mother is doomed to wear?
Pearl Yes, mother. It is the great letter A. Thou hast taught me in the horn book.
Hester : Dost thou know, child wherefore thy mother wears this letter?
Pearl : Truly do i. it is for the same reason thst the minister keeps his hand over his heart!
Hester : And what reason is that? Waht has the letter to do with any heart save mine?
Pearl : Nay, mother I have told all i know , mother dear, what does this scarlet letter mean? and why dost thou wear it on thy bosom? and why does the minister keep his hand over his heart? ( taking her mother's hand in both her own and gazed into her eyes.) What does the letter mean, mother ? and why dost wear it?
Hester : What shall i say. " Silly Pearl, what questions are these? There are things in this world that a child must not ask about. What know I of the minister's heart? And as for the scarlet letter, i wear it for the sake of its gold thread. Mother. what does the scarlet letter mean? ( Next morning ) Mother ! Mother ! Why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?
I and my group members choose this scene because in this scene it reveals Hester's deep hatred for Chillingworth. Another reason i choose this is because this is the time when Pearl starts to confront her mother regarding the scarlet letter on her mother's bosom. The pathetic loneliness of Hester's position is obvious as she should confide in her daughter.

Hester : Hold your tongue, noaughty child! Do not tease me else i shall shut thee into the dark closet.
My group members are Zahri, Tajuddin, Faiz and Tasha. Our scene is at the last part of Chapter 3 – The Recognition. In this short play, Tasha played the role as Hester, Zahri as Mr Wilson, Tajuddin as Mr. Dimmesdale while Faiz and me played the role as the crowd.
ReplyDeleteIn this scene, Wilson and Dimmesdale try to convince Hester to speak. Dimmesdale told Hester to consider her actions and about the sin of hypocrisy. He even looked down on the father of the child, who is he himself, for not having the courage to confess his sin. Hester refuses to name the father. Despite the pressure form the crowd, Hester still sticks to her decision, she did not revealed to the public who is the father of her child.
I still think that the scene that we acted out is the most important as we can see the difference between Hester and Dimmesdale about how they cope with the problem. Hester faced it bravely and accept the sentence though she is a woman. She does not even care abput the public view on her Scarlet Letter. But Dimmesdale is a priest and so he is too afraid to let the public know what he had done. To him, his image and position in the society is far much important than Hester. From this chapter we can see the elements of romanticism and naturalism that portrayed clearly by the character of Hester and Dimmesdale. So, this is why I think that this chapter (Chapter 3 – The Recognition) is important.

ReplyDeleteHester:let us not look back. the past is gone! wherefore should we linger upon it now? see!with this symbol, I undo it all, and make it as it had never been!

We chose this scene as it is where the two lovers can finally meet each other without being watched. After being separated for seven years, they can finally confess affections to one another, and decided to start a new life as a family. This scene is also important as it where Dimmesdale is properly introduced to his daughter, Pearl.

For the important scene, I would say that the scene in chapter 23 is the most important scene. It is the scene where Dimmesdale finally has the courage to reveal his part in Hester’s adultery to the public. When he learned that Chillingworth will follow them to England, he decided to stop hiding from the truth and admits that he is Pearl’s father. He also reveals his other secret—the letter A on his chest that caused him ill for seven years. By revealing the truth, Chillingworth’s revenge comes to an end. He no longer finds no reason to haunt the lovers and feels defeated. Dimmesdale, Hester and Pearl can finally stand up together as a family in front of the society, though it doesn’t last long. Dimmesdale dies soon after that, finally finds peace with his family by his side.
Nor Farhana Bt Othman (150154)
Our group decides on choosing the first part of Chapter 2; whereby Hester makes her way to a scaffold and she is to publicly condemned. We create our own script to portray the disparaging comments that Hester receives from the crowd.
ReplyDeleteWoman 1: What a shame! How dare is she to commit such sin! And yet, this is kind of punishment she got for what she did?!! It’s not suffice and torturing enough!
Woman 2: Yes! This is damn unfair. If I were the judges, don’t ever dream to only be sent to the prison. At the very least, they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester’s forehead! She should feel even more suffer to compensate her crime!
Woman 3: Hey bloody woman, you should have been put to death! Don’t you feel embarrass to live with your sin? Just digging your own grave and let God settle the rest!
Women 1: I feel like ripping off the letter on your chest. Look at it! What on earth has she done to it? Decorate it?? Is adultery something that you can brag about here and there? You are just like animal with no pride no dignity no feeling!!
Women 2: Lame lawmakers! This punishment is damn lenient!
WE WANT MORE! WE WANT MORE! WE WANT MORE!
We do feel this part is indeed important because it shows how Puritan society perceives adultery as a BIG sin and should be sought out publicly. It also fuels up the prejudice toward women as the blame is solely put on Hester despite the man who is responsible for it.
Besides that, this scene is also crucial in deducing the principle that Hester adheres to. She embroiders the letter ‘A’ on her bosom; simply because she feels proud rather than ashamed of her sin. She commits adultery with the acknowledgment of her human need for love; rendering her husband’s failure to arrive in Boston as well as to treat her as a wife.

Dialogues
Dimmesdale : Where, my kind doctor, did you gather those herbs, with such a dark, flabby leaf?
Chillingworth : Even in the grave-yard here at hand. They are new to me. I found them growing o the grave, which bore no tombstone, no other memorial of the dead man. It maybe some hideous secret that was buried with him.
Dimmesdale : That, good sir, is but a fantasy of yours.
Chillingworth : Then, why not reveal them here?
Pearl would be playing at the grave yard with her mother
Pearl :Come away, mother! Come away,or yonder old black man will catch you! He hath got hold of the minister already.Come away mother, or he will catch you! But he cannot catch little Pearl.
Chilligworth : There goes a woman, who, be her demerits what they may, hath none of that mystery of the hidden sinfulness which you deem so grievous to be borne. Is Hester Pynne the less miserable, think you, for that scarlet letter of her breast!
Dimmesdale : I do verily believe it. Nevertheless, I cannot answer for her. There was a look of pain in her face which I would gladly have been spared the sight of. But still, methinks, it must needs be better for the sufferer to be free to show his pain, as this poor woman Hester is , than to cover at all up in his heart.
Mr.Dimmesdale fell into a deep, slumber, sitting in his chair, with a large black-letter volume open before him on the table. Roger Chillingworth, without any extraordinary precaution, came into the room. The physician advanced directly in front of his patient, laid his hand upon his bosom, and thrust aside the vestment that hitherto has always covered it even from the professional eye. But with what a wild look of wonder, joy and horror!
Implication of the scene:
In this scene, Pearl would be placing the dark leaves at the chest of the mother. That is where the scarlet letter ‘A’ is. The leaves literally symbolize unuttered sins which are kept secret by the dead and as Pearl put them near the letter ‘A’ at Hester’s chest, the sin committed by Hester is emphasized. However, the irony is that Hester’s adultery is not a secret sin. It was not a secret because the letter ‘A’ could be seen clearly on her chest. Later on, Chillingworth would discover the same letter on Dimmesdale’s chest. For this, the symbol of the dark leaves is very significant. The adultery committed by the minister remains to be in dark until the doctor discovers it.

In my opinion, the important scene in the novel would be the scene where Dimmesdale urge Hester to tell the child's father in chapter Recognition. the reason I choose this scene is because the scene reveals the true nature of the characters. For Hester, we can see that she is loyal and willing to sacrifice her dignity to defend Dimmesdale. While for Dimmesdale, he shows that he is irresponsible. As a priest, he should confess the truth and protect Hester and Pearl. But he chooses to defend his title and not Hester. That is why this scene is important.

in my opinion, the important scene in the novel would be in the chapter Recognition. in this chapter, we can see that Hester defend Dimmesdale when people ask her about the her fellow sinners. we also can see that Dimmesdale act so good in front of other people. Even though he knew that he was in the wrong, he did not confess it. He let Hester alone carried the blame. This chapter is one the most important chapter because it shows the true colors of the main characters ant that is Hester and Dimmesdale

Our group presented the scene where Hester was visited by a her husband, Chillingworth who posed as a doctor to give her treatment for her illness.
the scene takes place in the prison and besides them, there were another two guardsmen present at that time.
furthermore, there are a lot of impertant scene that takes place in the novel. one of them is the scene where Mr. Dimmesdale finally confessed his acts of adultery with Hester because he cannot bear the burden and guilt that he carries on his shoulder.

This scene is important because we can see that Pearl starts to ask her mother about the letter A on her mother's bosom. In the conversation, Hester is hesitated to tell the truth to Pearl because Pearl is too small to understand the situation. Therefore, Hester decides not to tell Pearl what's the meaning of the scarlett letter A.

ReplyDeleteFor my group,we chose chapter 4,where the scene of Hester was visited by a her husband, Chillingworth who posed as a doctor to give her treatment for her illness and the meet the baby.the scene takes place in the prison and besides them, there were another two guardsmen present at that time.Chillingwort was so eager to know who is the father of the baby untill he make promise that he wont do anything that will harm the father of the baby just because he just want to know who is the father of the baby.
more than that, few others important scene that takes place in the novel. one of them is the scene where Mr. Dimmesdale finally confessed his acts of adultery with Hester because he cannot bear the burden and guilt that he carries on his shoulder.
Here’s the presented scene chapter 15
ReplyDelete“Be it sin or no,” said Hester Prynne, bitterly, as she still gazed after him, ‘I hate the man!’
….
‘Yes, I hate him!’ repeated Hester, more bitterly than before. ‘He betrayed me! He has done me worse wrong than I did him!’
….
‘Pearl! Little Pearl!! Where are you?’
….’I wonder if mother will ask me what it means?’ thought Pearl
‘My little Pearl,’said Hester, after a moment silence, ‘the green letter, and on my childish bosom, has no purport. But dost thou know, my child, what this letter means which thy mother is doomed to wear?’
‘yes mother,’ said the child.’It is the great letter A. thou has taught me in the horn book’
….
“Dost thou know, child, wherefore thy mother wears this letter?”
“Truly do I!” answered Pearl, looking brightly into her mother's face. “It is for the same reason that the minister keeps his hand over his heart!”
….
“What does the letter mean, mother?—and why dost thou wear it?—and why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?”
“What shall I say?” thought Hester to herself.—“No! If this be the price of the child's sympathy, I cannot pay it!”
Then she spoke aloud.
…
“Mother,” said she, “what does the scarlet letter mean?”
…
“Mother!—Mother!—Why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?”
“Hold thy tongue, naughty child!” answered her mother, with an asperity that she had never permitted to herself before. “Do not tease me; else I shall shut thee into the dark closet!”
The marketplace of chapter two would be one important scene, which need to be explored further, it contains the reaction and decription of the putritans toeards Hester’s sinful deed. Here, we see the extreme difference in the thought of the puritans and the sinner. To puritans, adultery is something against the society code of conduct and perceive as a crime and deserved to be punished publicly. In this scene, it show’s Hester, pride and shame. Her embroided shnning red letter A depicts the shame but in a way it is so shining that takes "her out of the ordinary relations with humanity". Hester knows what she did yet the crime she did, didn’t deter her from living on. Though she woul dbe living in a conceited life, she has the determination to raise Pearl.

Our group presented chapter 4, which is takes place in the prison.
ReplyDeletei as Hester's husband pay a visit to the prison to meet Hester and the child. I bring a medicine to Hester and the child. Fahmi as Hester at first hesitate to drink it but i persuade her to drink the medicine. After Hester and the child drink it, me which is Hester's husband have a talk. At the scene there are also Ikram and Faiz as guard to show the mood of the prison.
Chillingworth: 'my old studies in alchemy', have made a better physician of me than many that claim the medical degree.
(Hester hesitate to drink it)
Hester: wouldst thou avenge thyself on the innocent babe?
Chillingworth: foolish women! what should ail me, to harm this misbegotten and and miserable babe?. drink it.
i think the scene where Chillingworth visit Hester in the prison is the most important scene to me because from this we can see that Chillingworth demands Hester to give him the name of her partner in sin but she will not do so. In this scene, we also can see Hester’s public repentance, Dimmesdale’s reluctance to admit his own guilt, and the beginning of Chillingworth’s devilish plot to find and punish the father of Pearl. from this shows that
chillingworth is still love Hester and do not hate her but he want to punish the man who made Hester like that. so this is why i think this chapter is important.

ReplyDeleteMy group presented chapter 3; The recognition. My other fellow members are Saw Hua ji, Ahmad Tajudidn, Ahmad Zahri, and Mohd Faiz.
This scene is considered as crucial to us for the reason the position of Mr. Dimmesdale is being highlighted as one of the minister and also as the one whom responsible to persuade Hester Prynne to reveal her fellow sinner. Through Dimmesdale lines in the scene, i would infer that he is in the greatest dilemma and conflicts for he has to convince Hester Prynne reveals the name yet is afraid if Hester unfold the truth. As he trapped in the mess he created himself, he has no happiness since then. Hester Prynne imprisones, but prison in Mr. Dimmesdale is much suffering. In this scene, society has undivided trust towards him thus creates intrapersonal conflict, as I mentioned above in Mr. Dimmesdale. Guilt and scare haunts him yet he pulls it off wisely. Hester Prynne on the other hand is portrayed as stronger than before by voicing out her stand out loud. Mr. Wilson does persuade and force her to tell the truth, she refuses to do so however. She remain silent and firm with her decision even though be pushed to a corner. Hester Prynne’s bravery signifies the courage one woman has that is rarely recognized to that particular society. In normal circumstances, women will be just follow whatever men say and women appear as nothing but the good follower of man rules. Hester Prynne’s extra ordinary courage to stand on her own principle somehow to inspire Puritan women in that society to have their own words and fight for their rights.

Tan Jian Xiong, Hanis Khairi, Ishan – The Puritan children
Scene: Hester Prynne brings her child, Pearl to the governor’s hall, for two intentions; first to give the governor a pair of ornate gloves she made, and second, to ask about the rumours that Pearl may be taken from her.
Hester : It’s alright my child. We will leave once I have finished my business here. I need to know what will happen to you. That is why I must meet the governor and ask him directly about your status. I hope that this glove would be enough for him to change his mind if he has a negative answer for us.
Pearl : I don’t want to be separated from you mother…
As the two wayfarers came within the precincts of the town, the children of the Puritans looked up from their play- and spoke gravely one to another:
Child 1: Behold, verily, there is the woman of the scarlet letter, and there is the scarlet letter running along by her side!
Child 2 : Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them!
Child 3 : infamous creature!
*We choose this scene in the chapter 7 because this part reveals that Hester concerns about the rumour that her daughter, Pearl will be taken away from her and given to other parents. So she decides to meet the Governor to give a pair of gloves that she embroiders for him and to plead for him to be able to keep Pearl as the people of the town think that she is not capable to raise her child. On their way to meet the Governor, the children of the Puritans see them walking along on the town and mock Hester saying that a woman of the scarlet letter, then they fling mud at them. The children’s behaviours sometimes can be aggressive and unpredictable as they think that they can do whatever they want and they have to be controlled in order to protect them doing something bad and avoid them influenced by other people.

I think the most important scene is where Hester meets her husband come face to face for the first time in the jail in the chapter 4: The Interview. At first, Hester is in mental disarray and the jailer decides to call in the physician. Roger Chillingworth introduces himself as the physician for Mistress Prynne and enters the room to examine her. He offers a medicine for her but she refuses it as she concerns that he will hurt her child as his revenge on her. This scene also reveals about their marriage problems and how there is no love between them. Then, Chillingworth asks for her to know about the real father of the child but she refuses to give the name of the child’s father. Her refusal makes him to find out who the real father of the child is and that she not breathe a word of his identity to anyone. His action shows that she still loves Hester as he promises to find out the man who makes her suffer alone and to make sure that the man will get punished as well. Therefore, this scene is the most important for me then.

Chapter 15 Hester and Pearl
(as posted by Narinder, Adani and Fonyi)
Briefly, this scene narrates Pearl’s curiosity towards the relation between her mother’s scarlet letter and the minister’s habit of clutching his heart. While the scene opens with Hester’s encounter with Chillingworth, the rest of the scene focuses on Pearl’s 3 questions which she repeated thrice. This scene, like most of the scenes presented, did impact the story as a whole. It revealed to us Hester’s true feelings towards Chillingworth, a husband of whom she married without understanding why she ever did so. We finally get a glimpse of what she really felt and that was the key to her reason for adultery. On the other hand, this scene also showed us how Pearl provoked her mother to tell her of the scarlet letter and her relation to the minister. In The Scarlet Letter, Pearl herself is a symbol, a reminder of Hester and Dimmesdale’s sin. She serves to constantly remind them of their sin and push both of them to revealing it. It is only at the end when Dimmesdale confesses that she becomes ‘human’.
However, as much as this scene has impacted the story, I personally find that the scaffold scenes more significant. There are 3 scaffold scenes to be exact. First, where Hester was introduced (chapter 2), second, where Dimmesdale wandered all alone past midnight to confess his sins on it (chapter 12), and lastly, where both Hester and Dimmesdale revealed their sins publicly and the latter passed on (chapter 23). Out of these three, I see the third scaffold scene as most noteworthy. It reveals not only everything but also resolves them; or as Sparknotes put it – a catharsis. Dimmesdale finally confessed and accepted Hester and Pearl publicly, Pearl eventually received an earthly father and became ‘human’ and Chillingworth revealed his vengeful anger. All the unsolved mystery between the three of them is now disclosed and they’re freed from all the emotional entanglement of their sinful act. This scene strongly represents a victory gained from the escape of sin’s deadly clutch after all the pain they were put through. “…the minister stood, with a flush of triumph in his face, as one who in the crisis of acutest pain had won a victory…” In Dimmesdale’s case, he was even released physically – an even greater escape. Hence, the way I see it, this scene releases everything that has been kept within the characters and therefore also releases the emotional burden we readers bear as we follow after their story.

ReplyDeleteMy other group members has presented a scene from chapter 18. The importance of the scene is where, in this scene Hester face Dimmesdale and both of them finally admit that they do love each other and Dimmesdale says that he finally can feel the joy once again and Hester can feel the freedom again. Another importance is that, in this scene, Pearl is being introduce to Dimmesdale, her true father.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the important scene in the novel would be the scene where people want to know the truth of sin that Hester had committed. In this chapter of Recognition, people ask for the truth and wanted to know the father of Pearl. Hester refuse to tell the truth and defending the sinner. This scene is very important because it show the real characteristic of Hester and Dimmesdale. Hester refuse to tell the father of her child and Dimmesdale acting as he did not commit any sin. This scene is the gist of the conflict that happen in this novel as they both has their own reason for not telling the truth.

this scene is important since it shows the changes in Chillingworth character...the one who always calm becoming a fiend who seek for revenge...besides, we also can see the view of Hester on the scarlet letter...she does not see it as a punishment and she does not want to remove it from her bosom...she understands that its removal would be as meaningless as its original placement..she believes her soul salvation are matters that are between her and God
I think that the storyline for my group (chapter 7 = the governor’s hall) is the best ever. First and foremost, it is one of the major turning point in the story. It also foreshadows what will happen in the future, that is Pearl being taken away from her rightful mother that is Hester.
ReplyDeleteThe treatment that both of them received from the citizen also shows the discrimination and injustice that is being thrown to them. It is very not suitable for kids to insult the woman by flinging the mud at her. Nevertheless, we could clearly accept that the grown up in the story were like this during their younger age. Like father, like son. There is no doubt that these kids would be the same as their parents in the future.

AS Hanan said, i also agree that our group's choice, chapter 7 is one of the most important scene that foreshadows what will happen to Pearl. The gavernor wants to separate them, and the community cannot accept the existence of Pearl and rumours she is a witch, or demon child. they want to ebolish Pearl and the mother, to ensure the sinner get punishment during their living. the treatment received by the puritans children also shows how Hester is unneeded in the society. in my point of view, what happen to Hester is no different from what happen in our society now. if we figure out someone pregnant out of wedlock, we harshly want to descriminate them and hate them. As a result, more babies found death in many places.is it the punishment by the community, or the parents itself irresponsible for what they did? Here we clearly see Hester as a tough woman, and a loving mother, live up the faminism in her character.

CHAPTER 12
The Minister's Vigil
Group members:

In this chapter, we specifically chose the scene where the minister saw the letter "A" in the sky.
Juni(Pearl): Minister!
Harith(Mr Dimmesdale): What would you say, child?
Juni(Pearl): Will you stand here with mother and me, tomorrow afternoon?
Harith(Mr Dimmesdale): No, my little Pearl. I will one other day, but not tomorrow.
Juni(Pearl): Will you promise to take my hand and my mother's hand, tomorrow afternoon?
Harith(Mr Dimmesdale): No, Pearl. But other time.
Juni(Pearl): But what other time?
Harith(Mr Dimmesdale): At the great judgement day. Then, and there, you, your mother and I will stand together but the daylight of this world shall not see our meeting!
Juni(Pearl): (laughing)
***a meteor shoots in the sky(Rezza)***
***lights blinking and look like the alphabet "A"***
The importance of this scene is that the "alphabet" is also seen by the villagers. But they thought it the "A" stands for Angel and take it as a sign that Governor Winthrop had ascended to heaven. Actually the "A" stands for Adulterer and it shows that the villagers didn't know who had made Hester pregnant.
Personal Respond
ReplyDeleteAs a group member of Hanan who present the scene where by Hester being humiliate by the children in the society in Chapter7, I personally feel that there is another which we must concentrate on. The chapter that I mention is Chapter 8. This is the chapter where the Governor claims that Hester has no right to keep Pearl along her side because she is not a good role model for her. When Governor approaches Hester, he was accompanied by Mr. Wilson, Roger Chillingworth, and Reverend Dimmesde. They claim they are concern about Pearl’s future and believe that Pearl may be better of being raised by another family. From here, we note that Hester’s feminism and motherhood of protecting her own child being taken away. She is strong in her will and independent woman who willing to take up the burden of humiliation. In this chapter, we notice that Pearl shuns Wilson and clings to Dimmesde, exhibiting what we will later understand as a profound subconscious insight: her instinct leads her away from the representative of her “heavenly father” and toward her true, “earthly” father. Her impulse also reflects on the relative characters of the two men. Wilson, as she senses, is not to be trusted, while Dimmesdale, although he refuses to acknowledge his guilt, will ultimately remain loyal to her and her mother.

Chapter 16
A Forest Walk.
Pearl : Mother, the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hide itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. Now, see! There it is, playing, a good way off. Stand you here, and let me run and catch it. I am but a child. It will not flee from me; for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!
Hester : Nor ever eill, my child, I hope.
Pearl : And why not, Mother? Will not it come of its own accord, when I am a woman grown?
Hester : Run away, child, and catch the sunshine! It will soon be gone.
Pearl : It will go now.
Hester: See! Now I can stretch out my hand, and grasp some of it.
In this scene, Hester told his daughter, Pearl, to grab the sunshine. Sunshine here I think symbolize the hope and respect. Hester told her daughter to grab the oppurtunity before she lose it.
I think Chapter 10 (The Leech and His Patient) is important because this is one of the turning points in this novel. Chillingworth begans to suspect Dimmesdale for the adultery and he begans to question him indirectly. Every question or statements relates Dimmesdale to the sin. For example,he talked about trees that grow on a grave and he tells "the leaves are dark because it is filled with the unrevealed sin of the person under the grave". He is too addicted to his findings and he is carried away.He begans to have evil looks on his face.At the end of the chapter,he finds out the mark on Dimmesdale's chest. That is the reason why Dimmesdale became sick.Eventhough the mark was not revealed, but through his expression described in the novel, we can guess what mark is that because mark is what moves the story along. So,we can see the importance of this chapter to the progress of the plot.

As reading through this novel,i find chapter ten which is The Leech and His Patient to be one of the important scene in the story.
ReplyDeleteHere we can see the calling Chillingworth “evil” in motives and in deed and this has somehow attacked Chillingworth's soul. He is even compared to Satan. Pearl senses this evilness more than anyone, calling Chillingworth "the Black Man" >she is furious not knowing who her father is and this scene foreshadows her angry towards Chillingworth as her mother's husband and Dimmesdale as her father.
Much earlier,Chillingworth claims to Hester that he would find out her partner by just reading her heart. Instead he is in fact able to read Dimmesdale's heart and know the secret Dimmesdale is hiding that Chillingworth is surprised by what he discovers. This surprise shows that Chillingworth never fully suspected Dimmesdale of being Pearl's father.
This scene enlightens us about the hidden secret which i would consider as pre-climax scene.

For me, chapter 10 is one of the important scenes in this novel. This chapter is the turning point where, dimmesdale’s secret will be revealed. Eventhough chillingwort suspected on Dimmesdale’s adultery, he try to ask him about it indirectly. In the later part of the chapter, Chillingworth will found the letter “A” on dimmesdale’s chest. At first the mark is not revealed, but Dimmesdale’s reaction towards the accidental meeting with Hester and Pearl make him suspect. This scene is important in the progress of the novel.

Our group has chosen chapter 2.
Personally i strongly believe chapter two is the chapter that influences all scenes in story. it begins with the introduction of society's attitude towards a woman, a sinner and a child. Plus, it also depicts Hester's view on her sin which is not something to be shamed of. Hester in someway feels proud of her scarlet letter, and it gives her courage to undergo life in Boston.
Society's attitude in Chapter two shows how value has deteriorate in mankind as they unable to react sane towards Hester and Pearl. They become very judgmental and keep on condemning Hester's sin. By the end of the play they refuse to forgive Hester and Dimmesdale though the reality is, they also human who cannot run from making mistake.

there were many group presenting their chosen act. my group presented chapter 4. the scene is when Chillingworth went to visit Hester and her newborn baby at prison. Chillingworth brought some medicine for hester and the child.
for us, this scene is important because it shows the relationship between the couple after having the baby. although Chillingworth is angry and frustrated with her wife's act, he still have the feeling of mercy towards her by giving her the medicine.
by the way, after reading some comments above, i think the most important scene will be chapter 10. it is when chillingworth found the mark letter 'A' on dimmesdale chest. that is the first hint of with whom did Hester commit adultery.
Group presentation as posted by Fariz Rezza..
ReplyDeleteto add a bit..The scarlet letter that glows in the sky is a sign telling Dimmesdale that even nature knows of his guilt and sin.
Personal response on the important scenes….
The scaffold scenes provide a framework for the entire novel and help highlight the most important themes. For me the most important and significance scene is in the last chapter.
In chapter 23, it reveals and resolves everything that keeps holding the secrets during the entire story. As dimmesdale fighting for his last breath, he finally frees his soul from the burden of his own sin. By his action it also release Hester and Pearl from any humiliations and sufferings that they suffered during the entire story...

Our group had chosen chapter 2. This scene is when Hester walk to the scaffold and being despised by the society.
In my opinion, this scene makes a great significance to the society as how women are treated for such a minor sin. As we can see the society only put the blame on Hester despite the man who did the adulterous. However, Hester is proud of her sin and try her best to defend the man as she did not tell the true identity of the man who did this to her. For me, Hester act of defending the man is a great sacrifice that nobody could do. Despite being put to a shameful situation, she still defending her love.

Our group has chosen this scene to be acted out
ReplyDeleteHester:let us not look back. the past is gone! wherefore should we linger upon it now? see!with this symbol, I undo it all, and make it as it had never been!
This scene is actually introducing Dimmesdale to his daughter which is out of Wedlock.
I think this scene is important. For your information, this scene is taken from chapter 18. In this scene, Pearl is introduced to Dimmesdale, her biological father. It is really important for Dimmesdale to know his own daughter as she is the product of their illegal relationship. Pearl is also a prove of the love between Hester and Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale has to be introduced to his daughter as he is the one to be blamed/put on responsible if anything happens to Hester in future.

I think the most important scene in the novel is in Chapter 10 which ‘The Leech and His Patient’. This is the scene where Chillingworth would discover the culprit of ‘Adultery’. The letter ‘A’ was found on Dimmesdale’s chest as how it was on Hester’s. Chillingworth was thirsting for a revenge on the person who Hester committed adultery with. Soon after finding out, Chillingworth who was a physician made use of his profession to seek revenge on the minister. This statement is signified through the metaphoric title of the chapter. In this case,Chillingworth as the leech and Dimmesdale as the patient. A leech would suck out human blood. Over-sucking can cause dizziness to human. In the story, Chillingworth started to poison Dimmesdale despite his duty to cure his patient. The truth that he found out changed the whole person of Chillingworth; from a dutiful physician to a revengeful man. The transformation in the characteristic of Chillingworth shows a great dynamism. Therefore, I would say that the discovery of the letter ‘A’ on Dimmesdale’s chest is the most important scene in the story.

Chapter 16

Pearl : It will go now.
Hester: See! Now I can stretch out my hand, and grasp some of it.
In this scene, Hester told his daughter, Pearl, to catch the sunshine quickly. In my opinion, sunshine can symbolize hope and dream to show how Hester wants to give her child light in her life.
The important scene I think is when Chillingworth tries everything to find the sinner that makes Hester delivered a child not his. He would do anything including disguising as a doctor to Dimmesdale. It highlights Chilllingworth determination to do everything due to his evil heart...

This chapter is rich with symbolism. However, the most meaningful symbol that we can found is in this scene. We chooses this scene above all because this scene connecting Pearl with the nature and wilderness around her. Sunshine can be the symbol of hope. Pearl sees the sunshine loves her but vanish for her mother, Hester. Sunshine is afraid of the adultery symbol on Hester’s bosom. Hester hopes that Pearl will never have to wear a scarlet letter or symbol of a sinful act like her. There are hopes for Pearl in her life since she has not yet being humanized by the society.

Chapter 14
Hester and the Physician
Hester: Isn't it nice walking here at the beach, Pearl?
Pearl: Yes, mother
Hester: you can go there and play if you want to
Pearl: thanks mother. i will make a sand castle for you
(Pearl go and play with sand)
(Hester approaching Chillingworth)
Hester: what are you doing?
Chillingworth: collecting herbs for my medicine
Hester: can i speak a word with you?
Chillingworth: of course! i heard they are considering to take the scarlet letter off yur bosom
Hester: i don't think i worth to deserve it
Chillingworth: then, wear it, if it suits you better. tell me, what you see in my face?
Hester: something that will make me weep. avenged
Chillingworth: indeed! i could reveal the secret!
Hester: i don't know you anymore. you have changed
Chillingworth: What am i now? a fiend! and who made me so?
Hester: me! why don't you avenge on me?
Chillingworth: i have left you to the scarlet letter but not him
Hester: i must tel him regarding your true character
Chilingworth: what should i do then?
Hester: forgive and leave it to God to decide
Chillingworth: it is our fate. let the black flower blossom as it may. now go thy ways and deal as thou wilt with yonderman
(Chilingworth turns back a give a wave, goes away)
Pearl: mother, come and see my sand art!
Hester: what is that?
Pearl: it is a hybrid, half human and have turtle
Hester: does it has a name?
Pearl: yes! itam mugambe!
In this chapter, it shows the changes of characteristic in Chillingworth character. He turned to be a man with an evil spirit in him after what Hester has done to him. He would do anything in his revenge including disguising himself as a physician or a doctor. Besides, we also can see the view of Hester on the scarlet letter, she didn't see the scarlet letter "A" on her bosom as a punishment from her sin because nothing much will change if she remove that scarlet letter from her bosom. She believes her soul salvation are matters that are between her and God.

My group presented the scene where Hester was visited by a her husband, Chillingworth who posed as a doctor to give her treatment for her illness.
The scene takes place in the prison and besides them, there were another two guardsmen present at that time.
There's some important scene here. One is the scene when Chillingworth visited Hester, gave her some medicine and at the same time, try to track down who is the father of Pearl. This show the determination of Chillingworth and his spirit full of revenge. Also, show the determination of Hester in keeping secret, which she did not reveal the responsible man for their adultery. This is why I think this scene is one of the important scene in this novel.
