Discuss the importance of literature in ESL.

  1. When I think literature, I'm thinking old writings in literature classes. To me – it’s an appreciation. Literature is almost like history, and you can learn a lot about history and the general views of the time. Literature expanses our learning. It helps us to think. Understand things. The importance of literature in ESL , probably writing reaction papers based on that literature. Think of the importance of that. Responsibility, English of course, correct grammar, punctuation, etc. The list goes on and on. Helps us in writing. It is taught for the promotion of vocabulary and puts students in touch with the subtle and varied creative uses of language. It emphasizes language observation.

    The Importance of Literature in ESL

    Well to answer the question if literature is important I should briefly compare literature with human body. What is really necessary for us humans is food in order to survive and live. Without food we are not able to live longer than maximum a few days. That is why we all specify some time everyday to eat. In my opinion literature is the food for our spirits. By feeding our spirits with nutritious foods then we can have healthy body and minds. Looking at the variety of foods in the world we can infer that literature of the world is absolutely rich and full of varieties.

    Literature helps us make sense of the world we are living in and teaches us how to cooperate and interact with the people who think more or less the way we do besides all the superficial differences. By reading the masterpieces of the writers around the globe, we can share our intimate thoughts and similarities without having any problem with time or distance barriers. And most importantly by paying close attention to literature in our lives, we can find ourselves and make our characters and have a reasonable judgment of ourselves based on what other people think and do in the world.

    Beside the global view to the literature I think literature can be very useful and effective in ESL. For instance by using literary texts in teaching reading we can make our students be familiar with the real vocabulary and structures of such texts and boost their sense of creativity. Literary texts can be used as the main materials in courses like self-esteem and socio-cultural attitudes in order to strengthen such skills.
    Professor Colin MacCabe of the University of Exter School of English says that to truly know a language, you must know something of the literature of a language. Literature is intellectually stimulating because a book allows a reader to imagine worlds they are not familiar with. This is done through the use of descriptive language. In order to understand, the reader will create their vision of what the writer is saying. In this sense, the reader becomes a performer or an actor in a communicative event. Using literature versus a communicative textbook changes the learning approach from learning how to say into learning how to mean (grammar vs. creative thinking). Conversation-based programs tend to focus on 'formulas' used in contextual situations so there is little allowance for independent thought and adaptation of language. On the other hand, literature-based programs focus on personal interpretation of the language so students begin to experiment with the language. This experimentation can be especially helpful to the students for use in different subjects such as science.

  4. Yes, literature is important in ESL environment because it helps students to improve their language through literature. As students read the literary texts they will find new words which could help them increase their vocabulary.
    According to Carter and Long 1996, fourth edition, literature can be an instrument for use in connection with the teaching of specific vocabulary or stuctures for language manipulation.This shows that literature can play a vital role in helping students learn a language and improve their vocabulary.
    Besides that, Carter and Long also states that literature is made from language. The more students can read in and through language, the better they will be in comprehending literature texts
    This proves that literature is important in ESL environment as students are able to understand literature through learning a language. It also could be said that students will be proficient in the language as well as be able to understand the literary text better. It is as if students are hitting two birds with one stone.
    In addition, Lazar 2002 in the eighth edition argues that learning literature in ESL environment is important as it helps to intergrate language and literature syllabus more closely.
    Futhermore, through learning literature in an ESL environment, it could help to increase students awareness and understanding of English language through the knowledge of grammar, lexical or discourse categories to make asthetic judgement of the texts using the linguistic evidence by relying on the knowledge of English to provide useful practice.
    In addition, through learning literature in ESL environment the students could understand other cultures and values, thus making it easier to comprehend the langauge. As the saying goes, in order to understand a language, a person should understand the culture within the language better.
    Hence, according to Carter and Long 1996, literature is a vehical for students to be in touch with wisdom found in different cultures. This makes them to appreciate and understand the culture found in the literary texts thus, helping them to comprehend and learn the language better.
    In conclusion, it could be said that literature is vital in ESL enviroment as it helps students in various ways to be able to comprehend the language better while enjoying themselves reading the literary texts.

Personally, yes, it is very important for ESL students to be taught literature in the classes, because in my opinion, to truly know the language, you must know something of the literature of a language. It intellectually stimulating because a book allows the student to imagine worlds he/she isn’t familiar with. This is done through the use of descriptive language. In order to understand, the students will create their vision what the writer is saying. In this sense, the students become the performer or an actor in a communicative event.
    Literature is authentic material. It is good to expose learners to this source of unmodified language in the classroom because their skills they acquire in dealing with difficult or unknown language can be used outside the class. It encourages interaction. Literary texts are often rich is multiple layers of meaning, and can be effectively mined for discussions and sharing feelings or opinions. It expands language awareness. Asking learners to examine sophisticated or non standard examples of language (which can occur in literary texts) makes them more aware of the norms of language use.
    Literature educates the whole person. By examining values in literary texts, teachers encourage learners to develop attitudes towards them. These values and attitudes relate to the world outside the classroom.
    It is motivating. Literature holds high status in many cultures and countries. For this reason, students can feel a real sense of achievement at understanding a piece of highly respected literature. Also, literature is often more interesting than the texts found in course books.it also motivates advanced students and is motivationally effective if students can genuinely engage with its thoughts and emotions and appreciate its aesthetic qualities. As a result, teachers and curricula designers should agree that literary texts encourage students to read, and most literary texts chosen according to students’ language proficiency levels and preferences will certainly be motivating.
    Literature is beneficial to language development. Literary texts are also rich resources of accurate dictation, diverse sentence patterns, and passionate narratives. It also enhances ESL students’ knowledge of culture and society, which is too complicated to be captured by any single piece of expository writing. Literature fosters critical thinking by offering students multiple perspectives, especially in books dealing with issues such as immigration, cultural differences, social upheavals, etc. It is an exciting medium to explore and yet safe enough to draw back and consider the alternatives.

    To sum up, literature offers several benefits to ESL classes. It can be useful in developing linguistic knowledge both on a usage and use level. In addition, to the extent that students enjoy reading literature, it may increase their motivation to interact with a text and thus, ultimately increase their reading proficiency. Finally an examination of foreign culture through literature may increase their understanding of that culture and perhaps spur their own creation of imaginative works.

    Morning everyone! I realised upon checking our shared account that I might be the first to post something here so I am unsure myself how to go about it. But.. I guess here goes.

    In my humble opinion, I think Literature is important in an ESL class because of 2 main reasons; the culture and the language. Nonetheless, though language is important, I believe the sole purpose in teaching Literature lies on the understanding of cultures and societal virtues uphold by the particular author or even within the setting where the plot and characters come to life.

    As Barbara Tuchman once said 'Literature is humanity in print', whereby one who is not exposed to the cultures of others can grasp it the moment they read a story about it. Take for example Pride and Prejudice. Many of us ESL learners will never experience the refined culture, society perceptions on women at that time and even the role of each individual in a family within a hierarchical society. Yet, from the vocabulary used in greetings and the language used during everyday conversation, one can understand the culture then and possibly make assumptions on the Englishmen in general. Moreover, from such literary works, we will also be able to see the history of the developing society then compared to our modern literary works because of what the world is today. Take another example on poems written by Wilfred Owen. Being a soldier and a witness of wars, he provided us ESL learners on the experiences of wars and how young men were sacrificed without even living their life as compared to their counterparts many decades later who are enjoying high end coffee and bragging on their latest technology gadgets.

    Nonetheless, of course to understand heavy classics such as Pride and Prejudice, one will need a strong foundation in the English Language. However, it can be the other way round where such literary works can enhance one's language usage and expand their linguistic styles in possibly both speaking and writing, causing one person to be more refined in their language and mannerism. After all, compared to 'She is not handsome enough to tempt me' and 'Oh goodness, she is ugly', a girl is less likely to slap the person who said the former. I assume =)

    Literature does not only include the English culture where the English Language was formed but also of other cultures written in English for the whole world to read. Books from other nations such as 'Daughters of Arabia', 'The Chinese Cinderella', 'A Boy Called It' or even folklores and children stories from other nations depict the cultures within. Of course, we should not forget the language used in these stories which are also different with one another since their setting and language paradigm are different. But, I am not sure if this aspect is answering the question.. so I guess.. I shall swerve back to the inital idea.. =)

    Therefore, I strongly believe literature in ESL is to teach the culture and reinforce the language usage learnt through formal instructions. Nonetheless, this is my humble opinion that I would like to share and possibly have other opinions towards the importance of Literature in ESL.

    Considering the topic, the importance of literature in the ESL classroom, means, we accept that literature is important and we're just trying to figure out it's appeal in comparison to the other elements of English language. Literature in the Malaysian educational system comes in two forms; 1. the English literature paper for SPM students and 2. the English literature that is a component in the secondary level English language syllabus. The former has been around for ages, thank God for that, and the latter was introduced in 2002 (if I'm not mistaken). I'd like to concentrate more on (2) since I went through the implementation and I also got a chance to teach it in a typical Malaysian school.

    I appreciate the existence of the literature component in the English language syllabus, it does help in a way or two. Students are introduced to the use of English in a way that is more refined, collected, settled. They are exposed to poems, short stories and novels penned by writers from all over the world. Literature in any language carries a strong scent of the culture, the thoughts and the beliefs of the writer and also the time which the writer intends to capture. Imagine the strenght or power of a tool that can capture a certain time that has passed, and keep it as fresh as the moment itself, and that particular moment is revived each and every time it is comprehended. This is what literature does, or should do at least. Of course, the appreciation of literature to this extent, would be a dream come true.

    As for us, we tend to ponder more on the importance of literature in improving ones mastery of English language. And yes, literature provides services in that area too. Literature provides compact text, a variety of forms, functions and expressions of the language, allows interpretation and nurtures the love for reading. But, are we handling this precious resource in a proper manner? I'd say, not really. Why? Because, it's only a small component that is tested as part of the English language exams. The importance of understanding and appreciating literature is largely shadowed by it's existence in the exam. Students ponder on the 'analysis of PMR English literature components' or 'question answering techniques for SPM English literature components' and past year questions, and this is the English literature that we learn and teach in schools.

    My personal experience with literature in school...

    I never saw the importance of English literature even as a way of improving my language abilities. One fine morning, my Form 4 English language teacher walked into class and said that we had a few short stories, poems and a novel to read before the SPM examinations. Some questions were going to be asked so we had to know these items, things like, you know, the flow (the story line or the point of the poem), the theme, the characters n their significance, the values and maybe abit of the setting. Well, MEMORIZING some information concerning literature components, part of the English paper, was no big deal, compared to all the add maths formulas, science subjects and accounts we had to face. Yes, this is the literature that I learnt. Lately I understood that we are all entitled to our own interpretations of any piece of literature and how we appreciate it (or not) is our own business. Sadly, I wasn't given that chance in school. When it came to the character I liked the most, I was memorizing the reasons for liking this character based on the "example answer" provided by a reference book, and the same goes to the justification of the themes, the values and the interpretations of the poems. As long as I got the points and the marks.

    It wasn't surprising that even when I got to the teaching part of nglish literature in school, the situation was still the same, if not worst. Well, can't blame them...they do have more past year questions and model questions and answers to practise on now. Who'd want to waste time, to take the time, to understand, to appreciate, to see the entire point of having literature when we have exams to prepare for. By memorizing the facts or points, students may be able to spit out nearly flawless language when answering the literature questions, but they'd never be able to naturally use the same kind of language in a different situation. Their knowledge of literature is shallow and their English language proficiency is as always, unpredictable and in certain cases disappointing. So, the importance of English literature in the ESL classroom? The need for literature is there, but maybe a slight change in the choice of items and the way they are handled in the classroom might just prove to be the enlightening factor.

    Literature is an important element in any ESL classroom, as it provides many reasons such as;

    Literature uses authentic materials.

    Learners are exposed to unmodified language source in the classrooms,
    Literature requires skills to deal with difficult or unknown language,
    Learners are acquired to use and learn words which are not commonly found or used in daily text,

    Literature expands language awareness.

    Learners are exposed to stylish aspect of language
    Literature makes the learners to be more aware of the sets of language used in the literary text.

    Literature encourages interaction

    Literature texts are always full of rich meanings
    Literary texts too have basis for discussions among their readers,
    Literature allows its readers to share their feelings and expressions.


    Literature motivates readers

    Literature in many countries holds high status among its readers
    Readers will have sense of achievement if they are able to understand any literary piece.

    Literature educates the whole person

    Literature encourages learners to develop good attitudes towards them
    The values and attitudes, in the literary texts very much relate to the outer world lives and the community
    Literature creates a wholesome person.



    As we know, the importance of literature in the classrooms not only as stated as above, but it is rather a value and reality in everyone’s life. Most literary texts portray thinking patterns and social norms in a society. Whereas, the classical literary texts, serve as fruit for thought and boost for imagination and also for creativity.


    Literature also gives a person to take a closer look in seeing their facts of life differently. It can somehow change a person’s perspective about their life through values imposed in the texts read by them.


    However, the study of literature cannot be restricted to only studying languages. As we know, languages are the structure blocks of literature. Literature is definitely, more than its literary meaning; in fact, it lays the foundation of an enriched life to living.

    This is my opinion about why literature is important in the ESL classroom.

    According to the KBSM English Language Curriculum Specifications, 2003, language for aesthetic purposes enables learners to enjoy literary texts at a level suited to their language proficiency and develops in them the ability to express themselves creatively.



    Professor Colin MacCabe (University of Exter School of English) stresses that literature is intellectually stimulating because a book allows a reader to imagine worlds they are not familiar with and this is done with the use of descriptive language in texts.



    I feel that literature is important in the ESL classroom for a number of reasons. Literature in ESL exposes students to a variety of themes and different cultures and this can inculcate a love for reading but this of course depends on how the texts are presented by the teacher. Literature also helps develop critical thinking skills and students are motivated to express their thoughts and ideas as well as give opinions. In other words, there is a lot of emphasis on thinking skills which is the focus of our education system at present.



    Literature in ESL also promotes individual evaluation as well as judgement. It should be a part of the ESL classroom where discovery and enjoyment are essential components of the learning process.



    Short stories like “Looking for a rain god” by Bessie Head exposes students to African culture and ancient customs. Students are struck by how someone could kill their own children and they want to give their views. Similarly, “The drover’s wife” by Henry Lawson gives them an insight of life in the Australian outback. Reading helps the students to imagine how it is like and they put themselves in one of the character’s place to feel how they feel. “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupaussant gives the students an idea of how the middle class in France lived during the 18th century. Student debate upon whether what Mathilde did was right.



    Finally, I think that literature would inculcate an appreciation of the English language as well as provide students with an education that is more holistic in nature.

    Literature was seen as a body of knowledge which ought to be learned for numerous purposes. The body of literature was given an important position that sustained the superior nature of creativity by itself.

    I feel that literature is important in the ESL classroom. It's an umbrella which covers a wide range of activities by using language. Literature learning enhance the learner's appreciation from the aspects different systems of language organisation. "The study of literature is fundamentally a study of language in operation" (Widdowson: 1971). Upon this, literature is an example of language in use, and is a context for language use.

    Besides that, I strongly feel that literature synchronizes and promotes discourse in a relationships between all ages. The results to this can be clearly seen through poems, plays and novels. The literature produces messages with background awareness, communicative convention and spotlight into linguistic, grammar, vocabulary and ect.

    Literature in ESL classroom will boost our perspectives in understanding, evaluating and appreciating the language in use and language use in literature. For an example, in the R.K.Narayan's works, a positive aspect of literary merit is measured. Some of his works in Swami and Friends: 1935; utilize simple language for a lively story that is appropriate for the ESL classroom. We also will discover more the indigenous and metropolitan cultures, social variance, organization of family life and etc. This can be seen from the British colonies, Indian subcontinent and ect.

    Nevertheless, literature teaching and learning emphasis on the development of language skills, enjoyment, creativity, collaboration in groups, encouragement for individual and etc. "It is my contention that some of the language activities and work with models on the literariness of texts can aid such development, and that responses can best develop with increased response to and confidence in working with a language using a variety of integrated activities, with language-based hypotheses and in classes where investigative, student-centred learning is the norm." (R. Carter: 1986).


    In conclusion, the important of literature should brought into the ESL classroom because it clearly define that literature can fruitfully be incorporate. Sadly, I wasn't given that chance during my schooling years. I'm glad that the teaching and learning of literature has been restore into Malaysian school life as a fundamental component.

    Hello good evening every one.

    QUESTION: IS LITERATURE IMPORTANT IN ESL CLASSROOM?

    In my opinion, literature is important in ESL Classroom because it provides "happiness" to students of various cultural backgrounds. Students may find literature is joyful to read tragedy, comedy or any work of fiction even it is of a tragic theme.
    Literature sometimes works as a historical chronicle. For example, Shakespeare wrote many historical plays depicting the "real" political and social state of Britain at different periods of time. For example, he wrote " HenryIV", "HenryV", "Henry VI", "Richard II" and many more. Hence, literature can easily show a piece of land's history and make it easy for student to learn incidents by heart, instead of learning them from some dull and monotonous history book.
    Literature also provides student with moral values as it deepens good attitudes inside them. It shows them wrong and right, evil and good and so forth. Besides that, literature may inspires students as a guide or a "map" showing' people how to live their lives in the right way and make the ultimate use of them. It also preserves the ideals of a people and these ideal are love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom and reverence which are the part of human life most worthy of preservation.
    Lastly in summary, I would like to say that Literature is the expression of life in words of truth and beauty, it is the written record of man's spirit of his thoughts, emotions, aspirations, and it is the history and only the history of the human soul having characteristics of its artistic quality, its suggestiveness and its permanent qualities which will never fade. The study of literature allows student to develop new ideas and ethical standpoints, and can help individuals to present themselves as educated members of society. Studying literature can be an enriching, eye-opening experience.
