The narrator of the story is not Nelly. It was an unknown girl with a black hair. She might be Hareton’s and Cathy’s daughter. She could also be the new housekeeper of the Heights.
The differences between the movie and novel:
1.The sequencing of events on the day Catherine died-- in the novel, Catherine died two hours after giving birth to Cathy, while in the movie, she died a few days after that.
2.Heathcliff and Catherine did not really show their affection towards each other in front of Edgar as much as in the novel.
3.The movie did not also show what Heathcliff did to Catherine’s corpse on the graveyard.
4.In the movie, Heathcliff is shown as an abusive person; abusing Isabella and Cathy Linton. In the novel, though Heathcliff injured Isabella on the day she ran away, it was the only time Heathcliff was shown to injured people physically. However, the movie showed Heathcliff as an abusive person, abusing Isabella shortly after their marriage, and also hit Cathy when she tried to run away. In the novel, Heathcliff never really tormented Cathy physically as he saw her like the Catherine that he loved.
5.The movie did not show the part where Hindley tried to kill Hareton. For me, it was an important part of the story as it was the starting point of Heathcliff’s relationship with the boy. Though it was not directly shown, the two of them had a father-and-son relationship, and they love each other.
    6. Hindley’s downfall was also poorly portrayed. Therefore, people who did not read the novel would not know that Heathcliff was making Hindley’s life more miserable than it already was.

    Overall review about the movie:
The story is too brief, making it failed to show the real emotions and conflicts between the characters in the story. It gave too much focuses on Heathcliff and Catherine that it failed to show other characters’ feelings. Edgar’s characteristics was not properly portrayed, making him looked pathetic than he actually was. The movie should show his good and polite characteristics more. The same thing goes for Isabella. Her character could easily be forgotten as she was just shown when Catherine met Heathcliff, the time when she eloped with Heathcliff, and also the time when Nelly visited the Heights. Some people might not even realize what she did with Heathcliff in the scene where they eloped.

How can it be implemented in the class:
By showing the movie to the class, students would be exposed with the brief idea about the story. They would know what will happen in the book, and it can help them to understand the story better. It is also a good way to learn the book as students can see how people during that era dressed, the culture of English people and how they communicate with one another.

I think it is better to show the movie first. It can help the student to get the brief idea about the story before they begin to read the book.

After watching the movie "Wuthering Heights",there are some changes that has taken place from what is exactly written in the novel. One of the difference in the movie and the novel is that the movie just touched the surface level of the original story while the novel told the complete story. it is more in depth in the novel than in the movie.
However, after watching the movie i could understand the story a bit better. The use of flashback in the story was used but it started with a different scene from the novel. The narrator of this story in the movie wasn't Nelly. From the voice,I predict that it is of a woman's voice who is much younger.
One of the technique that can be used to make students understand the story much better is by showing them the movie. If possible, the movie should be shown before reading the novel because students will have a brief idea about the story and the culture during that particular era.

From my opinion, I think that the narrator at the final scene of the movie is not Nelly. It could be Zillah but definitely not Nelly. From the movie that I have seen, there is a clear difference in chapter one and it is the dog. In the novel, there should be some dogs in chapter 1 that made Lockwood gets angry. However, not even 1 dog is visible during the first chapter of the novel.
From my opinion I think that the novel should be introduced first before the movie. This is because the novel itself has a larger context than the movie. Due to time constraint, the movie director might purposely shorten the real length of the movie. Why I suggested this is because reading will not give us full understanding, and neither do movie. However, novel can give us a better perception and emotion along with imagination about the story. Sometimes some stories background doesn’t match with our imagination. Hence, I think that only we can create our own imagination about the story by reading it. In other words, that is the original setting we create about the novel from our reading. Only then we can watch the movie and interpret the story in another interesting setting. If we watched the movie first, then our imagination would be limited to what the movie tells only. We could not develop further freely by doing this first.

Opinion about the movie. How much it differ from the novel?

Basically, I feel the movie is just fine. In my opinion, the movie is not being adapted 100% from the novel. The setting at Wuthering Heights and Trunchross Grange are suitable with the description depicted in the novel. Nothing could much attract my attention towards the movie except the great acting by Catherine Linton and Heathcliff. However I doesn’t mean the other actors and actresses fail to perform well, but unable to feel the intense or passion in Edgar Linton, Isabella, Hareton and others.
Moreover, I found that some scene like the scene (Catherina and Heathcliff look up at the sky) is not exist in the novel. For me, it would give misunderstanding for the students who have not finish reading the novel. The particular thing that make me so interested with the movie is the scene of Lockwood first encounter with Wuthering Heights family. The idea at the forbidden room is so real because I could feel the spooky feeling and get shock when ghost image suddenly appear.

Watching movie after or before reading?

I would encourage students to read the novel first and then later watch the movie. This is because, in the movie it is difficult to follow the exact scene and plot because the duration is limited. Furthermore the creativity of the director may vary and it will lead to wrong prediction for them who have not read yet.

    Who is the narrator?

I think the narrator is Zillah because at the end of the movie, there is one woman standing outside Wuthering Heights looking at Young Catherine and Hareton. According to the novel, Zillah is supposed to be in the movie, but her absence can come into conclusion that she might be the narrator in the movie.

How movie can be utilized in the classroom?

Watching movie has its own disadvantage and advantage. In my opinion, I believe that watching movie can help some students who are not proficient in the language to understand the story better. On the other hand, those who proficient and know the story well can come out with their own argument after watching the movie. As a result they can understand the novel even better than others.

    Who is the narrator?
I don't think that in this movie, Nelly is the narrator as in the novel. The narrator might be someone else, another character, a woman to be specific. I think that the narrator should be Zillah as Zillah is the minor character who is not seen in the movie, but she appears in Chapter 30 in the novel. Or the narrator could be the daughter of Catherine and Hareton.

Difference in the movie and the novel.
i spotted three main differences between the movie and the novel. First and foremost is "a pair of grim, shaggy sheep dogs". There are no dogs spotted in the movie. Besides that, when Mr. Earnshaw died, Heathcliff and Catherine console each other. But in the movie, Mr. Earnshaw death was brief and did not tell us what Heathcliff and Catherine feelings are at that time. The third difference is when Heathcliff dead. It was a windy day in the movie while in the novel; it is raining when Heathcliff died.

Introduce movie or novel 1st in classroom?
In my opinion, i think that introducing the novel should come first and the students need to read it once before we showed them the movie. This is because the movie is not following the plot in the novel 100percent and it only serve as a tool to make the students understand the novel better. By reading the novel first, students will be able to spot the differences between the novel and the movie. This will make them utilize their critical thinking skills.

  9. After watching the movie version of Wuthering Heights, there are few differences compared to the novel version of Wuthering Heights. If in the novel Lockwood asked Nelly to tell him about history of Wuthering Heights due to what he encountered when he was at Wuthering Heights, but in the movie we could see that the story began with the narrator narrated the story as if she was reminiscing.
One good thing about this movie version is only the important and significant scenes were highlighted and if the audiences have read the novel before watching the movie, they will gain better understanding of the story as this movie version was really appealing and easy to understand. Novel version of Wuthering Heights is very detailed but we can still imagine the story line with unlimited imagination.
With reference to the novel, I found that the exact lines were used in the movie for important parts such as the conversation between Catherine and Nelly and the part where Heathcliff begging for Catherine’s soul to stay on earth as long as he still alive.
Basically, by watching the movie version of Wuthering Heights, I personally have better understanding of the story and I would use the movie version of the texts that I chose for my teaching for my students to have broader view of what they are reading.

The most obvious difference that I see between the movie and the novel is the narrator. I think the narrator in the movie is the person who wore blue blouse in the end of the film. It could be Zilla because Zilla is not mentioned in the movie. Then, as far that I could remember, the scene where Mr. Lockwood was chased by dogs also was skipped by the director. It maybe because the director do not want to distract the audience from the main events of the story which is love between Heathcliff and Catherine.

For me, changing the events of the novel is a ‘natural’ way of movie director because they may want to make it more interesting. They also will skip the scene that may not important to him/her. The movie was an intersting movie. The director was able to create an environment which was almost alike as I imagine. The actors also are able to at least create an emotion that make the story interesting.

I think that teacher should introduce the novel first in the classroom before watching the movie. It is because after watching the movie, they may not want to read the novel as they already have general idea about the novel. Then, the main purpose of learning novel is to read, not understand by watching movie...:D

  11. 1.First of all, the narrator is someone who does not appear in the novel because she is not connected to anyone in the movie. It's just that she drops by Trushcross Grange and began to tell the story of how Lockwood reaches Wuthering Heights and the story goes on. So, in my opinion, this narrator is a woman who knows the story of Wuthering Heights but she got no connection with the novel
2.the reason why they repeat the beginning scene at the middle of movie is to show the connection of Heathcliff and Catherine Linton towards the story. It is really efficient as the audience will understand who the characters are, just like how it is written in the novel.
3.One of the differences that can be found in the movie compared to the novel is the beginning where Lockwood enters Wuthering Heights to see Heathcliff. In the novel, he meets Heathcliff first. but in the movie, he comes across Catherine Linton before meeting Heathcliff.
4.In my opinion, I would like my students to know the synopsis of the novel first. So, I would show them the book first. it is because, the movie is just a tool for them to get a better understanding. The main thing that is important or in other words, the oiginal piece is the book that I'm going to teach the students. So I'll go for the book first.

  12. 1. Who is the narrator of the movie?
The narrator of the movie remains mysterious as it is not stated as in the novel. I think the lady in a blue long dress who appeared at the end of the movie might probably be the one who narrated the story. She could be Zillah; the cook at Wuthering Height.

    2. Why the beginning part is repeated at the end of the movie?
This is what we called flashback technique. upon reaching Wuthering Height, Lockwood seemed to be haunted by his 'ghost' dream and addled by the three different names; Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Linton and Catherine Heathcliff which left him with load questions.the use of flashback has unfolded the intricate history of Catherine name notwithstanding the questionable identity of the narrator.

    3. What is the difference(s) between the two version of Wuthering Height; the novel and the movie?
I find that reading the novel does give me a more substantial view of every circumstance centred around the story. The explanation is more thorough and I can feel the intensity of each character. The movie is a bit brief in terms of highlighting the idiosyncrasies of the characters especially the couple;Heathcliff and Cathy, and Hindley. In the novel, Heathcliff seems to be harsher, wrenching by his vengeance which was not clearly portrayed in the movie. The same goes to Catherine's brother; Hindley who supposedly treats Heathcliff with a great despise and resentment.
In a brighter side, I find that the settings used in the movie have successfully blown the exact ambience between the Wuthering Height and the Trushcross Grange. The story becomes alive and sets the appropriate mood of students.
    4. I think the story should be watched only after the students have got the preview of what the story is all about. They might be blur if they watch the movie first without having any idea about the characters and the gist of the story. They might also take for granted to read the novel in depth after watching the movie.
    5. It is good to infuse the movie in class as it will assist students' understanding toward the novel. They will get a clearer picture regarding some elements in the novel such as setting and characters which in turn vital for them to consolidate what they have read and watched.

    1. Identify who is the narrator of Wuthering Height film.

In my opinion, the narrator of the Wuthering Height film can be called ‘unreliable narrator’. According to Wikipedia, unreliable narrator is a narrator whether in literature, film, or theatre, whose credibility has been seriously compromised. In this film, the narrator can be anyone. However, there are possibilities that the characters in Wuthering Heights also being the narrator at the same time. From my understanding, the narrator can be the girl in Blue blouse that can be seen at the end of the film. She can be Zillah, the servant of Wuthering Height. This is because she was in the Wuthering Height all the time with others yet she is not very obvious. She might be the one with possibilities to tell the story to others. Whatever she is, obviously she is not Nelly.

    2. What are the differences between movie and novel?

There are a lot of differences between movie and novel. The most obvious difference is the narrator of them. In the novel, it stated very clearly that Nelly is the one but in the movie, we have to guess who the narrator is. This arouses questions in audiences’ mind. In the novel, Nelly played the big role but in the movie she just being an extra. Beside that, in the book, Hindley was described as an extreme alcoholic who completely ruins his life. However, in the movie, his character is not really depicted as a troublemaker youth. Most of the differences are happened because of lack of description in the movie compared to the novel. Some of the parts in the novel have been shortened in the movie because of time consuming.

From my experience, I read the novel before I watched the movie. From that, I learn that it is easy to understand the whole story if you read the novel first. Therefore, I prefer to introduce the novel first to my student then follows by movies. The novel stated every single event in details, which might not be present in the movie. We also can see the clear movement in the plot from novel. Because of movie is used in class to help student to achieve better understanding in the novel not in the other way around, so student have to read the novel first.

However, no matter what medium we use to present Wuthering Heights, it is a great story with complicated storyline, which surely make students interested to learn it.

    Hi,Madam Ju.

It was definitely something unexpected to see a woman in a blue dress at the end of the movie. She is the narrator of the story and was revealed only at the ending; which was a real suspense. The suspense escalated when her identity was not told. However, based on my reading of the novel, I believe that she must be the Zillah as she was the only character that did not appear throughout the movie. Zillah must be someone who should have been told or observed the story herself.

Regarding the repetition of the beginning; it is one of the techniques to capture the audience's attention. The flashback started, continued and stopped at the same scene where it was triggered. In fact, the scene was the reason for the flashback to be started. Therefore, its repetition is to tell the audience in an apparent way that; that particular scene is the main point that streamed the story.

As for the difference between the story and novel; there are some which I managed to find. Firstly, the story is definitely shorter than the story. Some of the scenes were omitted. Of course this is something usual for movies made out of novels.Besides that, some sequences also has been adapted according to the director.

This version of the movie can be used in the class room by the teacher only if he/she could not get a better version. this is because students would not be exposed to all the settings and events of the story if they watch the movie. Nevertheless, teacher can use it for revision; which is after teaching the story thoroughly to the students. If not students might get confused with the flow of the story at the beginning itself.

    Thank you.

  16. Greeting Puan Juridah,

    Who’s the narrator?
An unidentified female character that drops by at the Grange.I am not able to identify the character as the movie differs a little from the novel. I believe that this movie has been adapted and more studies on this movie would reveal the narrator

    Why is the beginning repeated?
It is repeated to give connection to the flashback, thus it gives a clearer picture of the story to the viewers. The blurred exposition of the movie was eventually been explained later on.

    Difference between movie and novel
The main difference that I felt was that the movie attracted my attention better than reading those lengthy words in the novel. In the novel, description of actions and settings were more precise to show the readers but in the movie, those elements were simplified.

Opinions about using this version of movie in class
In my opinion, I would prefer to watch the movie than only proceed into heavy reading of the novel. I believe that attracting the readers visually would increase their interest into reading the thick novel. Other than that, readers would be able to visualize the story better with characters and settings in their mind while they read the novel after watching the movie.

    Thank you

    Who is the narrator?
In my opinion, the narrator of this movie might be Zillah as she is the minor character in the novel. Meanwhile, she only appeared in a dark blues dress at the ending of the movie. She was revealed at the ending of the story to show the suspense and make the movie more interesting for the viewers.

The differences between the movie and novel?
There are not many differences between the movie and novel because we still can understand the flow of the story even though it is not adapted 100% from the novel. In the novel, Nelly and Lockwood will narrate the story, but in the movie a woman in dark blue dress will narrate it. Some of the scenes, such as the scene where Heathcliff and Catherine looking at the sky are not exist in the novel. Moreover, the movie did not show what Heathcliff did to Catherine’s corpse on the graveyard.

How to utilize movie in classroom teaching?
In my opinion, introducing movie to students is a good way of teaching them, but the students must read the novel first before watching the movie. This is because so of the scenes in the movie might not be adapted form the novel. The plot of the story also might be changed in the movie. If the students read the novel, the can spot the differences between novel and movie.

Opinion about the movie. How much it differ from the novel?
To be frank, I am impressed by the movie and it was easy to understand the movie as we have gone through the story before. However, there are some things in the movie which is not familiar or stated in the novel. For instance, the narrator; according to the novel, the narrator is Nelly but in the movie, the narrator is unknown. Another obvious difference is the very first scene where according to the novel, Lockwood meets Heathcliff first and later Joseph but in the movie, it is vice versa.

Watching movie after or before reading?
In my opinion, I think it is better to read the novel before watch the movie because if we watch the movie first, the events will stick in our mind and we will find the novel weird. So, by reading the novel first, we are clear about the sequences of the scenes.

    Who is the narrator?
According to the novel, the narrator is Nelly but in the movie, I find it hard to identify the narrator.

How movie can be utilized in the classroom?
We can use the movie as a synopsis for the students to get some of the idea of the novel because same book can be interpreted differently. In addition, pictures and movies will help students to remember a thing better. Therefore, we can use this movie as a tool for students’ better comprehension.

Who is the narrator in the movie?
From my opinion, the narrator is an unknown as there are no specific evidences to show who the narrator is. I think that the director of the movie created another character in order to be the narrator of the story. However, the only specific thing about the narrator is that the narrator is definitely a woman.

The differences between movie and novel?
There are many differences between the movie and the novel. I will pick some of the major differences that can be identified. Firstly, is the encounter between Lockwood and Heathcliff. In the novel, there are many descriptions about Wuthering Heights but in the movie there is only darkness can be seen surrounding Wuthering Heights. There is also no dog that attack Lockwood in the movie but can be seen in the novel. The conversation between Nelly and Catherine when Catherine expresses her feeling towards Heathcliff is not seen in the movie but clearly written in the novel.

    Movie or novel comes first?
From my opinion, it is best to introduce the novel first to the students. It is to ensure students get the rough idea what Wuthering Heights is about. Not only that, it is much better if the students learn the original text first. After tackling the novel, students will understand more when they see the movie.

  21. 1. Who is the narrator in the movie?

In my opinion, the narrator in the movie can be considered as an anonymous person. This is because the last character that was shown at the last part of the movie is the character that never appeared from the beginning. My assumption is that she is the anonymous character that narrates the story in that movie.

    2. Differences between movie and Novel

The first obvious differences that I can spot are that in the movie the director used the anonymous narrator but, in the novel the narrator of the story is Nelly. The next differences that I found in the movie is when Heathcliff died the weather is windy but in the novel the weather that was stated is rainy. The third different between novel and movie is that in the movie Heathcliff and Catherine can be seen obviously in love but in the novel it is not clearly stated that they are in a relationship.

    3. Movie or Novel comes first?

I think that the novel come first, this is because in making a movie the director must have a story line or a plot. That is why I think it come from a novel.

after watching the Wuthering Heights movie, i think that Nelly was not the narrator of the story. the only think that i realized is that in the movie, the narrator was defenitely a woman but it is not Nelly.

there are many differences that we can spot from the movie if compared it to the novel it self. the first one is the eccounter of Mr. Lockwood and Heathcliff. there is also the scene where Heathcliff and Catherine looking into the sky does not exist in the novel.

from my opinion, it is best for the teacher to introduce the novel first and then the movie. this is because, if the teacher start with the movie, the student might dont want to read the novel because they think that they already know about the novel. teacher must let the student read the novel first so they can spotted the differences between the novel and movie.

Who is the narrator in the movie?
The narrator in the movie is portrayed by an anonymous person. But, from the voice of the persona, I can identify the narrator gender as a woman. The narrator in the movie never makes any appearances throughout the movie.

    Differences between movie and novel.
There are some differences between the movie and the novel. For example, The narrator in the movie is portrayed as an anonymous woman who is can never be identified throughout the movie but in the novel it is clearly stated that Nelly which is one of the character in the novel also act as the narrator in the novel.
Besides that, there are some scenes that actually occurred in the novel but not in the movie. For example, the scene where Mr. Lockwood was attacked by the dogs is stated in the novel but in the movie there is no scene showing that Mr. Lockwood has been attacked by the Heathcliff’s dogs. There are many other scenes that did not follow accurately the storyline of the novel. It is probably due to time constraint in the movie. Basically watching the movie is more enjoyable compared to reading the lengthy words in the novel.

    Movie or novel comes first?
In my opinion, I prefer to read the novel first before watching the movie. It is because by watching the movie students may improve their understanding of the story after reading the novel. The use of movie will freshened up their memory of the novel storyline as the movie shows some interesting and important scenes that occurred in the novel. Therefore, it would be helpful to read the novel thoroughly and later watch the movie to enhance students understanding.

As stated above, the use of movie as an interactive medium can be a helpful tool as our support to teach students in order to help them to get the concept of the novel and further understand the novel storyline. Besides that, it can reduce the stress of reading lengthy text in the novel. According to few researches done by some experts, it is shown that using an interactive media in teaching courses can boost the performance of students.

I love to read manga from Japan and as well as watching the anime. Although they are from the same story, the way the story goes will always be different. This also happens to Wuthering Heights, both novel and movie. The difference between novel and movie, for me, is the starting of the story. From my opinion, the start of the story will play a big role for the whole story. For example, we always can start the story from present to the future or from present to the past and so on. The novel starts with the curiosity of Lockwood which leads to the story of Heathcliff and Catherine. On the other hand, the movie starts with a narrator who we do not really sure who is she, telling the story to the audience. The way the story starts will influence the way the audience will interpret the story and enjoy the work.

Before this, I usually read the work first then watch the movie. Based on that experience, it will help me to get a clear picture about the work especially the setting which sometimes I wrongly imagine. Besides, if I watch the movie before I read the novel, I will surely lost interest to read it since I already have the clear picture in my mind. It will not be adventurous enough for although it just to challenge my mind.

Who is the narrator? It still is a question. It might be Zillah or Hareton’s and Cathy’s daughter. For me, since in the novel, Nelly is the person who narrates the story to Lockwood, the director just do not want the audience to look his movie as bias as being critized toward the novel. So, he put the view on a narrator who is a third person which we can decide ourselves who the person would be.

To really appreciate a work, we must read it. The movie will be another interpretation of the director which might not be the way the writer wants the reader to interpret it. What I think the best is to go through the novel with the students in order to let them get the gist of the novel. The movie will be a tool to make sure the students are on the right track and not misinterpret it. It also can challenge the way the students interpret and give a better understanding about the novel.

  26. Well, I think that the movie “Wuthering Heights” does not adapt completely in the novel as there is a certain part in the novel does not mention in the movie, for example, in the first chapter, while at the Wuthering Heights, there should have a scene part when Heathcliff seems not to trust Lockwood, and leaves him alone in a room with a group of snarling dogs. In general, the storyline of the movie “Wuthering Heights” is still based on the novel, so the readers can understand how the plot of the story flows and also can predict the story well as they have studied the novel before they watch the movie. However, I think that it is better students should watch the movie first, and then read the novel in order to let them open their mind to imagine about how the story develops and the actions of characters in the story. Furthermore, the thing that makes me feel interesting about this movie is it uses the technique of flashback to show the reminiscence of the story. By reading the novel, I sometimes tend to feel difficult to imagine and find the part where the use of flashback in the story is. Last but not least, in my opinion, the person who narrates the whole story in the movie is probably Zillah, but not Nelly as Zillah is the only person who does not appear in the movie, even she is the minor character of the story. In a conclusion, I still feel enjoy watching the movie “Wuthering Heights” even though I still do not finish reading the novel completely.

In my point of view, the narrator in the movie is totally different from what we read in the novel. in the novel, Nelly is the one who narrates the story but here in the movie, it is a young woman that might be the servant or the heir of the two houses.

Next, the technique use in the movie is really captivate the audience as the repetition of the beginning at the end of the story has instill some understanding for those who have not read the novel before. The audience exactly will recognize how the flow of the story is going on.

Furthermore, there are quite numbers of differences between the movie and the novel. Hindley who is suppose go to the college is not been act in the movie, how he is going to kill Hereton, and Hindley's downfall. moreover, the element of dog that want to attack Lockwood also is not there in the movie. However, we can say that the director has done his job very well as they need have to limit the length of the movie for their financial purpose or what ever.

In conclusion, watching movie is good way in getting students to understand the storyline of the novel but the novel should come at the first place because the movie actually has been alter here and there purposely to attract the audience. Therefore, those who are not read the novel they might confuse in certain act or scene. Last but not least, this movie is very good to watch! Thanks Mdm Ju! =)

It is almost impossible to exactly adapt the whole novel into a major movie production. Due to that reason, there are differences between the two. However, the movie manage to keep the main event and important element into a reality. Off course there is some scene from the novel that was omitted from the movie but still did not change the whole story. For me, the narrator remains anonymous throughout the whole movie. It is totally contradict from the original version of the novel where the narrators are known for each chapter. However, the narrator in the movie is for sure a woman. The only guesses is either Nelly or Zillah. But for me it will remain anonymous. Lastly, combination of both, novel and movie will give a better understanding about the inside out of the stories they learn. However, for me it is best to read the whole novel first or at least the synopsis before move on to movie version.

The differences in movie and novel?

Obviously, the movie that I watched during the class was much easier than the novel version. Of course when I look to the thick novel, my desire to read become very low. What else, when reading a few pages of the novel, and still did not get what was the story all about? The movie was very helpful to us because by looking at moving or animated things, plus the sounds, they were much more interesting rather than just thousand of lines that can easily pamper me to sleep. There are a few differences also I noticed during the watching, like, when Lockwood was leaved alone with the dogs in chapter one of the novel. That scene was not in the film.

Watching movie after or before reading?

I absolutely think that, reading the novel first is the correct strategy to understand the story. I did that on a few stories before Wuthering Height like the series of Harry Potter’s stories. I found that if I read the story first, I become more interested to know more, and that determine whether I end up watching sleeping or awake. It maybe because of the fact that we already know what are going to happens afterward. When I know the story line, I can guest who the characters, the setting of places, what are actually happens etc.

    Who is the narrator?

Zillah? Nelly? From the movie, I strongly think that the narrator is Zillah, the housekeeper or servant in Wuthering Height. Zillah is one the characters in the novel, but since there is no appearance from Zillah throughout the movie, I think it was her at the end of the story.

How to utilized movie in class room teaching?

Showing the students with movies is one of the great strategies to raise their interest on learning story or novel. The movies are much easier to comprehend, and most importantly, movies are not boring like reading. Showing movie of the related reading subject can make the students attracted to learn more on the story.

  30. A) In my opinion, the narrator of the story in the movie Wuthering Heights is young Catherine's and Hareton's daughter. The reason is the girl has black hair as she carries Hareton's genetic. Thus, it is relevant to say that the narrator is Hareton's and Catherine's daughter.

    B) There are several differences between the movie and the novel that we can identify. They are:
    1. In the novel, the narrator of the story is Nelly. However, in the movie, the narrator of the story is someone else,an unknown person.
    2. In the novel, it shows the existence of the dogs and the moment where Mr. Lockwood is attacked by the dogs after he is left alone with the dogs. While in the movie, this part does not exist.
    3. The exact time Catherine die that is stated in the novel is two hours after she gives birth to young Catherine, but in the movie Catherine dies several days after giving birth.
    4. There is part where Isabella leaves for London if we read the novel. In the movie, this heartbreaking moment is not demonstrated.
    5. The novel describes the downfall of Hindley briefly, where Heathcliff lends his money to him as he becomes alcoholic, and he dies because of that reason. However, in the movie it does not describe what has happened to him.
    6. Heathcliff digs Catherine's grave and he lies beside her corpse. This scene is highlighted in the novel, while the movie only portray Heathcliff dig the grave.
    7. The novel also describes the scene where Hindley tries to shoot Heathcliff, but in the movie this particular event is not being emphasized.
    8. Heathcliff is viewed as very abusive towards young Catherine in the movie whereas in the novel, he is not as abusive as that towards her.

    C) The director of the movie tries to capture audience interest by repeating the beginning of the story and the ending. This technique is called flashback. The reason why flashback is being applied by the director suggest that certain particular event is significant to the story where the event Mr.Lockwood comes to meet with Mr.Heathcliff depicts the history of Wuthering Heights is revealed.

    D) From my point of view, get the students to watch the movie first is the best way in helping them to get the whole picture about the novel. The illustration of the movie on how the settings of the story are set and the portrayal of the characters of the story enable students to imagine exactly what they see in the movie when reading the novel, and this will encourage them to read the novel.

  31. The main question asked by madam Juridah who was the narrator in the movie? in my opinion, the narrator of the story is Catherine, Cathy’s daughter. She tells the story to the audience like a diary reading.

As i expected if a movie is depicted from a novel, there will be many changes made due to time constraint. However, the movie that is shown by Madam Juridah is the same version that i have downloaded during the break, successfully keep track of the theme of the story. There is some scene that is cut or changed but it was plot is similar to the novel.

If it was a choice that i have to made for personal interest i would choose movie, but when it comes to education, i would prefer that we study a novel. Teacher should introduce the novel first because if the student have been introduce to the movie at first, they will loss interest in reading the novel.

Movie is a medium that teacher's last resolution to lazy students. :D

    1)Who is the narrator?
Throughout the movie, we can notice that there a lady who is narrating the story. Yet, she doesn’t dress and look like Nelly who supposed to tell the story as in the novel. So, I can guess that she might be Zillah who work as a house keeper in Wuthering Heights because she came out from the Heathcliff’s house at Wuthering Heights. The producer might want to emphasize the mysterious of this minor character in the story.

2)The differences between the novel and movie? Which one you prefer the most? Why? Why the beginning of the scene of the movie repeat?
I personally feel that movie does help a lot in literature learning especially towards those who are vision learners. I helps me to understand more about the setting and environment that writer tries to convey through words. Sometimes, certain kind of scene cannot be described by words only, it needs vision to enhance the power of constructing the idea. Yet, novel do has its own good side in giving lots of expressions illustrating and makes the story in full of intensity. If both novel and movie use in learning literature at the same time, it will enhance the process of learning. Through the movie, I am more understood the story line and clearer towards the feelings of the characters. This helps to recall more on what have I read throughout the story.

Well, this movie does change a few plot in the novel. Like, Heathcliff and Catherine never sit under the tree together and look at the sky. Besides that, Heathcliff does dig Catherine’s grave in the movie, but the movie has no scene after the digging. In the novel, Heathcliff will lie down beside Catherine’s corpse and look at the sky together with Her.

I think the scene at the beginning repeated is because producer of the movie use flashback technique to bring audience back to the past time and bring them back to the current time. This makes the movie more interesting and people who never read the novel will think that this a story narrated by someone through flashback memory.

3)How to utilize movie in classroom teaching?
In my opinion, I think movie can be a very good teaching aid for literature learning because it helps to visualise what had written inside the books. It should shows after students had read the book. Besides that, it also indicate the ideas that writer try to convey through actors’ actions. Student can write a movie review towards the differences between novel and movie in portraying the theme of the story. Furthermore, students will not bore in watching the movie rather than reading the book which full of words and punctuation.

  33. Who is the narrator in the movie?

From the movie, the storyline was narrated by anonymous narrator. In the last part of the movie, there's a character that never appeared from the beginning of the story. But it's obviously a woman as judged from the voice. It should be young Catherine, Zillah or Nelly.

    Differences between movie and Novel.

Well, I'm taking the movie and novel of the famous Harry Potter for example here. In all those sequel of movies and novel, there are a lot of differences. There are some parts that has been cut down to make the movie shorter, sometimes more interesting as well as boring and readers might spot the differences between movie and novel straightaway.

The same goes in Wuthering Heights. The narrator in the movie was an anonymous person but in novel, it's obviously Nelly as the narrator.
Some parts in the novel was never shown in the movie. Example here is the scene where Lockwood was attacked by the dogs when he arrived at Wuthering Heights but that scene was never shown in the movie. That was an obvious scene that never been shown in the movie. Most logically, the producer has decided to not included the scene in the movie because of the duration of the movie.

    Movie or novel comes first?

From my personal opinion, i rather read the novel first before watching the movie. Novel as an introduction to the story and then movie to sum it up and to give better understanding of the movie. :D

If the teacher shown the movie first, students might not wanted to read the novel after that.

  34. The first and foremost different between the novel and the movie is, the narrator. I bet everybody would notice it. It was not Mr. Lockwood nor Nelly, but a woman that I cannot figure out who, but I do think it might be Zillah, the housekeeper at Wuthering Heights during the latter stages of the narrative (supposedly according to the novel).
The second thing is the appearance of a dog which exist in chapter one, when Lockwood enter the house, but not shown in the movie. However things like this is hard to be shown as Lockwood in the movie only appeared twice, and not as the major character. Also miss out the chapter 4 scene where Heathcliff asked Hindley to exchanged their horse as he claimed his horse is lame. This is the first scene where Heathcliff is showing his tricks to win the heart of Mr. Earnshaw. In the movie also shown Heathcliff and Chaterine looking at the sky that totally never happen in the novel.
So I do believe students should be encouraged to read the novel first before watch the movie. It is hard to understand the plot of the movie and the character in it if people watch it before read the novel Wuthering Heights. Movie can be additional tool in enhance students understand of the novel, but not as the main source to learn the novel. Some ideas and scene is quite impossible to be implemented in the real life situation, as the life in the novel mostly fantasy.

  35. The answer for the first question is Catherine. Catherine is Cathy’s daughter. After reading the novel, I’ve learned that Nelly is not the narrator of the story and I guess Catherine is the one who tells the reader about the whole story.

Movie or read the novel first? In my opinion, reading the novel once before we watch the movie will be lot more easier for us, the reader to understand the whole movie. Furthermore, novel is a fully version of a story and movie is just the cutting version where the director of the movie need to cut many important scenes or incidents in the story to make the movie much more shorter than the novel in order to make sure their movie do not reach the time limit.

From my point of view, reading is important to student. It can improve their English skills in writing, comprehension or etc. In this case, when I am asked about which is more important, movie or novel should be use in the classroom to learn the story, I would prefer reading the novel first and watching the movie is my second choice. The reason to my answer is, watching the movie will make students lazy, when they are asked to read the novel, they will say that, “why do we have to read the novel when we already watched the movie?”.

I think the narrator for the movie version is Zillah because at the end of the movie, there is one woman standing outside Wuthering Heights looking at Young Catherine and Hareton. I may be wrong as it also can be Nelly or someone else but I strongly feel that it is Zillah.

Watch movie or read the novel first? For me, which you do first is not important because you can gain understanding of the story by doing any of those first. If a student is not much of a reader, he can watch the movie first and later read the novel. if the student can finish reading the book, he can watch the movie for further understanding.

Showing the movie version of the story is a good way to attract the students interest as they can enjoy and learn in the same time.

Who is the narrator in the movie?
After watching the movie i believe that Nelly is not the narrator of the story just like in the real version in novel. I do discuss it with my friend about who is the real narrator in the movie and we agree that the narrator in the movie is Zillah, one of the minor character in the novel. As i could recall Zillah character can be seen in chapter 30 of the novel.

    Differences between movie and Novel.

At the first expression of the movie, this movie have kill my hing expectation. The first scene of the movie suppose to be a scene that full of element of suspend and mystery, however there only a few these elements were shown.More than that,a few scene in the movie were uselessly add to the story and a few scene were suppose to be in are not. Also, lots of line were spruce up just to made this movie be more commercial as well.

    Movie or novel comes first?

Definitely i will say to read the novel first is better because it is the origin version of the story so you may have the real story as a mark.If you watch the movie first, you will get confuse with the real story lines.

However, by letting your students is a good way in helping them to understand better the movie. The students may see the different between watching movie and reading the story. However the teacher should let the students read the novel first.

    1. Who is the narrator of the movie?
From my point of view, the narrator of the movie is not stated clearly. Some say Zillah, others say Nelly. For me, the narrator is anonymous. She could be either Zillah or Nelly because there is no single evidence that we can say who is the narrator.

    2. Differences between novel and movie?
Okay, there is a lot of differences between novel and movie. Some of the element in the novel are not shown in the movie. As an example, in the movie, the scene when lockwood entering Wutrhering Heights, there are not clear enough description about the environment of that place. There is also not stated the character of dogs in that scene whereas in the novel, it is clearly stated that dogs are playing an important role in that scene.

    3. Movie first or novel first?
I prefer to watch movie first because I can make a fine and clear view about the story before I read the novel. Otherwise, movie are more interesting than novel.

    Who's the narrator?

It is unknown on who created the movie but in my opinion, I agree that Zillah is the narrator. Although Zillah is just a minor character, I believe troughout the story and my instinct keeps telling me, "That's the narrator".

    Differences

Just like many people said, movie deleted many details that we expected from the novel. What we think that could be very interesting turns out to be so lame or too short for us to even notice. There are also many added scenes.

    Movie or novel first?

I agree to watching movie first. Novel is long and reader takes too much time to finish reading. We will have to read to the end in order to understand the story. Also, reading is quite boring. It's all just too many words in it. Hence, watching movie is better. the story can be understand in 2 hours. We may not easily get boring if the director is good and the actor and actresses played their role well. If we follow with reading novel, then we may learn more and more about the story, the elements which are there or not in the movie. The details are more to learned from novel. So I think it's best to watch movie first.

How much it differ from the novel?
In the film, Young Catherine resembled exactly like her mum, which the film has wrongly asserted. Secondly, there weren’t any dogs appear when Lockwood first initially visited Wuthering Weights as what portrays in the first chapter. In the novel, it shows the current on going situation where Lockwood when searching Nelly to retell the past event while in the film, it is being retold as in everything happened was past.

The repetition of the beginning in the middle of the film is meant to connect the audience to the story and it tells the timeline of it so that audience won’t be confused when they started watching. It gives an effect to maintain the audience interests with the film to find out what’s the truth lies behind it.
Alright, the movie begins with a girl narrating who says ‘my pen creates the story of world’s that might have been. It didn’t portray nelly dean as the narrator but a mysterious gal who wandered into the watering heights narrated it. I was left in questions where I couldn’t identify the gal appear in the film who is actually the narrator of the film. Therefore the movie might be narrated by someone who knows the history of the Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.

It is advisable to read the novel first before watching the movie. Reason being is that, after watching the movie, it kills your imagination where it limits your creativity in imagining the whole scene. Besides, novels provide more information than the film, thus, when watching, one could do comparison.
It is good to have films as part of the activity in classroom for it will enhance the comprehension of the students. While film might not portray the originality of the novel, it does help students to expect what settings and other literacy element they should be.

I think the narrator of the story is Zillah.

I have spotted some differences between the story and the novel. There are
    i) Heathcliff was pictured as a very abusive person in the story whereas in the novel, he is not that violent.
ii) In the novel, Heathcliff waited for Catherine when she wanted to deliver her baby while in the story, Heathcliff only came after she delivered her baby.
iii) Heathcliff and Catherine were not shown as a very loving couple in the story compared to what is in the novel
iv) In the story, Heathcliff dug off Catherine's grieve but it was not shown what he did after that. Actually, in the novel, he lied down beside Catherine's dead body after he dug off the grave
    v) There were very little scenes showing the presence of Edgar's sister, Isabella in the story while in the novel, there are more mention about her

I think the movie should be shown before the teaching of the elements of the novel. This is because readers can differentiate what is lacking in the story compared to the novel. Readers also will know what to expect when reading the novel.

The use of flashback technique in the story can help people who watch the movie to get the gist of the story. They also can relate the scenes showing after that scenes. So, they would not be 'lost' during watching the story.

The showing of the movie is suitable in the classroom because students will be exposed to the culture of the story especially if the culture is totally different from theirs. It also can help the students with low-proficiency level as they will be learn indirectly through the dialogue of the characters.

the narrator, as what we read in the novel is Nelly and Lockwood. Lockwood tells he audience about his new place and the occurrence that happens when he meet his landlord, Mr. Heathcliff. however, in the movie, the narrator is not as the same as in the novel. there is another girl who is apparently not Nelly. thus this is the difference created by the director for the movie version.

the movie version, apart from the novel is slightly different. however, the most obvious part that differs from the novel version is that Heatcliff's mental breakdown that turns him down is not showing its effect to the audience at all. i wonder what the director of the movie is thinking to abandon this important part of the story.

in my opinion, watching the movie would be a better idea in order to let the student 'feel' the main theme, the setting, the characters etc. in a literary work. this is because interactive multimedia can provide adequate stimulus for students' minds to absorb information from the text. later, when the students have the general idea about what the literary works generally contains, they will learn it more easily.

Like many adaptations of novels into movies, the Wuthering Heights movie seemed to me like a very brief recount of the major events in the novel in isolation. There is quite a lack of continuation and relation between one event and another; thus making it difficult for one who knows not the original story to understand the movie. Perhaps due to time factor, the movie has been shortened in terms of length; causing the omission and alteration of many conflicts and events crucial to our understanding of the story. As such, the storyline may be a little distorted. Take for instance, in the novel, Nelly and Lockwood play narrators of the story, but in the movie, an unknown character is seen doing so. This mysterious character, donned in a dark blue dress is perhaps Zillah, Heathcliff’s housekeeper at the Heights. She was the only character not mentioned but seemed to know a lot about their story. Another noticeable difference is the portrayal of Heathcliff’s character. The novel describes Heathcliff to be a figure of danger and evil; an abusive and revengeful individual filled with intense darkness. His character is foreshadowed at the very beginning of Chapter 1 – Lockwood’s encounter with him. However, the intensity of his character was only depicted in his physical appearance and abusiveness towards Isabella, his wife in the movie. Apart from that, everything about him was but a touch on the surface. However, the repetition of the opening scene of Lockwood’s encounter with the Wuthering Heights family was a clever technique of relating the isolated events to each other, only from that of a different perception.

The original novel is written in the form of a few characters’ recollection of their memories with a very vague timeline and jumbled up sequence; much effort is already needed to straighten out that sequence of events while reading. To watch without reading then would mean putting ourselves in a risk of misinterpretation. Therefore, if this movie is to be used as a teaching aid, I would strongly suggest that it be shown after students have gone through the original text once. In the context of today, students tend to rely much on the convenience provided for them. Hence, showing a movie might just stop them from reading further and when that happens, what they gather from the movie would naturally be taken as what is written in the novel. Nevertheless, it is a very useful tool in assisting further understanding of the novel. It allows a more concrete illustration of the story, its characters, setting and culture; making the printed novel come alive. In a lesson on this novel, the movie is probably best be used to summarize the whole lesson on this novel. A compare and contrast task would enable students to identify the differences between these two mediums and further enhance their grasp of the novel; by identifying what is authentic and what is altered.

All in all, despite a few setbacks, this movie has provided me with substantial illustration of the novel which I find can be rather tedious when read and imagined.

  45. In my humble opinion the narrator in this movie could be anyone, but at the end of the movie we can see an
image of an unknown black haired woman. It could be any women from the story or Emily Bronte' herself.

There's a lot of differences between the movie and the novel itself.
Among of them is the movie does not really portray clearly the way that Catherine dies, while in the book
it is being described that Catherine dies from delivering her only baby Catherine (II). Besides that,
the movie also does not show the part where Hindley tries to kill Hareton like in the book. Other than that, the movie also does not portray
how Heathcliff has dug the grave of Catherine after she has been buried. Also there is not much attention focused on how Wuthering Heights has changed
ownership from Hindley Earnshaw to Heathcliff.

The flashback approach used in this movie helps in reliving the things that has happened to the chracter in the past so it can appeal
    more to the audience.

By having this movie shown in the class, it can help students imagine better on what they have read or what they are going
to be read.It also helps the students to understand the culture, people and setting of the story as all of it might be unfamiliar to them.

I think it's better to see the movie 1st as it can help students imagine things inside the book while they are reading like the place, character, ambience & etc.
Besides that, by watching the movie first, it can help reduces the dissapointment of expecting too much from the book that you has read. Like you believe everything that has been described
in the book will appear in the movie. (^_^)

in the novel the Wuttering Heigths, we can clearly see that the narrator was Nelly. But in the film, we cannot see who was exactly the narrator. the only thing that we can say about the narrator that she was a woman.

the are a lot of differences if we compared the novel with the film. as example, in the film the y did not show the scene where Heathcliff lied beside Catherin body after he dug the grave. they also leave the scenes where Lockwood get attacked by dog when he arrived at Wuthering Height.

for me, it best for the student to read the novel first. this is because the novel can help them understand the theme and characters better than the film. the film can be shown to the student to help them had a better understanding of the novel

  47. Movie Review:
Usually, the movie added too much aspects like a movie should be such as background music to enhance the effect to the audience. Most of dialogues used by the characters especially Heathcliff and Cathy during the scene before she died were stated in the novel, Chapter 15. While many people say that this movie just touched only the surface of the story, I would not say so. For me, the movie is good for lower level proficiency students and a reward for high proficiency students. However, it was surprising to see a woman in dark blue dress, known as Zillah acted as the narrator in the movie while the real narrator should be Nelly, the housekeeper. Above all, I like this movie because the most touching moment was well acted by both Heathcliff and Cathy, “I love my murderer.” Once I heard that sentence, I feel like my heart was punched thousand times because it touched me just like when I read the novel, but in the movies, it seemed so real. I should give five stars rating for this movie because this is the best love story ever written in this century and it was like.no.other.

The Differences between the NOVEL and the MOVIE
Frankly speaking, I read the novel in one go and I did not really analyse it thoroughly. However, I could spot the differences. Apart from the change of narrator as I stated above, there were few changes. The first thing was the scene when Heathcliff and Cathy promised to each other for their love was not there. The second thing should be, the character of Isabella was less portrayed in the movie and it seemed like she was not important at all. However, the movie added certain scenes that were not written in the novel like the moment Heathcliff cried at Cathy’s graveyard and he was like a dumb, doing nothing but let himself drown Cathy’s world. However, the movie removed the thing that Heathcliff should do to Cathy’s corpse at the graveyard. It was so contradict because the producer took out the important scene but added the cry scene to make the movie looked more tragic. All in all, the movie was not much difference from the text. Those who have read it could brilliantly spot the differences and the audience we could predict the producer’s intention.

How It could be Implemented in the Classroom:
Wuthering Heights was greatly written by Emily Bronte to show the greatest love among the two young people who come from different part of the world. As far as I concern, students who dare to take Literature for Study must really good in their target language, in this case it would be English. Giving them a chance to watch the movie is an award for them after all of them have finished reading the movie. However, movie is made to get as much as profit from it and more often than not, the producers deleted the minor parts of the novel. It was not to say that we should not watching movie and should depend on the text per say. Therefore, before letting students watch the movie, they must at least read the text once and knows the plot, the incidents, the events, the characters and their characterizations, the setting and its description and the language used. These are to ensure that students will not confuse and will be able to differentiate between the novel and the movie. Thus, when the students enjoyed the movie, they would feel better because they can connect with their knowledge of reading the novel itself. The teachers should always encourage the students the importance of reading because they could get everything from the text and nothing can compare with the text including the movie no matter how good was the effect used. The movie was the audio visual aids that might help the students to visualize the setting of the moors and the Trushcross Grange better but the readers know the best. After all, the movie was still great to be watched especially for big “L” students as they are still young. The “Love Story” movie would be their favourite for the time being.

  48. In my opinion, the narrator in the movie is most probably Zillah, Heathcliff’s housekeeper. That’s because in the novel, she works for Heathcliff and so it would only be natural that she knows so much about the family’s history. Besides, she’s one of those characters who were mentioned in the novel but was not pictured throughout the movie.

The beginning is repeated because it serves to remind audience about the connection it has with the narrative part of the story and it also gives us a better understanding of which time frame that scene fits, in the movie.

Amongst the many differences there is in the movie, I noticed that they shortened some scenes that took place in the novel. For instance, they omitted the scene where Lockwood was supposed to get bitten by Heathcliff’s dogs and Zillah would appear to defend him with her frying pan. Besides that, the scene whereby Mr. Earnshaw sends Hindley away to study is also omitted in the movie. The most obvious difference is the appearance of the narrator towards the end of the movie.

I think that students should be asked to read the novel first. This is so that they would have a strong grasp of the storyline and would not be affected by the omission of the many scenes in the movie. Once they know the novel well enough, then students can be given visual aid in the form of a movie to help them in visualizing the scenes, characters and setting of the novel in their mind.

The movie should be used as a teaching aid, to reinforce the images of the characters, setting and mood of the novel which may not have been brought alive when the student reads the novel. Furthermore, the movie helps students remember the storyline better, though the teacher should remind students that the movie is just an aid and it does not portray the complete, exact representation of details and scenes as in the novel. That is why it is important for students to read the novel first so they can tell the differences apart and not be confused.

    The narrator..
In my opinion, the narrator of the story is Zillah, the servant in Wuthering Heights.

The differences between movie and novel...
Obviously watching the movie of Wuthering Heights is much more interesting compared to reading the novel. In the movie, it captured my attention and I can focus more because it has sound, movement and dialogue uttered by all the actors and actresses. I have spotted one difference betseen the movie and the novel. The difference is, in the novel, it mentioned about the dog but in the movie there is no scene about that dog.

    Time showing..
I think the movie should be shown before reading the novel because it can attract and encourage students and it also can give a brief idea of what the novel is all about.

    Utilize movie in classroom teaching....
In my opinion, shoeing movie to the classroom is one of the best way in teaching. The students have to read the novel first before the teacher showing them the movie because there are many things that students can gain by reading. Shoeing them the movie can give them better understanding of what they have read.

Who is the narrator in the movie?

After i watched the movie,i would guess that the narrator of the story is an anonymous character and to be specific,a woman. At the end of the movie,we can see there was a young woman with black hair who was never introduced at the beginning of the movie. However, the narrator can also be Zillah or young Catherine.

    Differences between movie and novel..

There must be differences between movie and novel because it is not necessary that the adaptation is 100% from a novel to the movie. In a movie, there might be some point that is missing from the novel or it is not detail as much as in the novel.Clearly, the narrator in the movie is absolutely not Nelly, unlike in the novel,Nelly is introduced as the narrator.Next is during Mr Lockwood comes to visit Heathcliff at the Wuthering Heights. In the novel,it is described a scene when there are few dogs to attack Lockwood but it has not been shown in the movie.Apart from that is about Isabella's physical apperance when she is described as a blonde in the novel but in the film, she has dark hair. Moreover, the director sometimes need to cut few scenes due to the duration of the time.

Which should come first?Movie or novel?

In my opinion, i would say that reading the novel should come first because novel is the introduction or main geist of the story while movie is another medium or alternative for better understanding. If students were given task to read novel first,it is good for them to spot any differences or similarities after they have watched the movie.Teacher should know how to manipulate the situation by asking the students to read novel first so that they will not take for granted.

How to utilize the movie in the classroom teaching?

Showing the movie to students is beneficial as it can gain their interest in learning literature or any other subject because nowadays, movie has become part of their life same like music :)

  52. Motion pictures give better understanding than reading the novel itself. However, there are differences between what is being narrated in the novel and in the movie. I found Wuthering Heights as quite an interesting story.

In the movie, I guess young Catherine is the narrator, telling the whole story from the very start towards the very end. It happened another way round when I read through the novel. As far as I know, Nelly and Lockwood were narrating the story and both of them were taking turn telling the story.

On the other hand, the best time for a movie to be screened in class is after the students finished reading the whole novel. Watching movie can be a medium used by teachers to encourage the students to read the story from the very beginning towards the end. Usually what is being put into movie is not similar to the one narrated in the novel itself. So, I believe by giving space to the students is something important so that they know what the real story is without relying on the movie itself as both movie and novel potray different things.

All in all, I can conclude that Wuthering Heights is so real and I just Love it so much.

  53. Hye. better late than never. hehe. Below are my answers of questions given :

    1. Who is the narrator in the movie?

The narrator in the movie is most probably Zillah, Heathcliff’s housekeeper. however in the novel it is not, which i strongly believe it is Nelly.

    2. I have spotted some differences between the story and the novel.

    - The narrator in the movie was an anonymous person but in novel, it's obviously Nelly as the narrator.
    - The first scene of the movie suppose to be a scene that full of element of suspend and mystery

    3. 3. Movie first or novel first?
    - In my point of view, i prefer to read the novel first then followed by watching th emovie. to me the adapted movie wont be that good as the novel and there will be a lot of missing elements. it can be proven in Wuthering heights whereby there are some features are be left out and to me, it should not. However movie is a very good medium a teacher can use in classroom to catch students' attention

Ok, firstly, honestly, I didn’t like this kind of movie where the weather or the season is windy, cloudy or very dull. It’s not interesting at all. However, the theme of this story is about gothic, so, I think the settings are really suitable and nice. It complements each other, just like Heathcliff and Catherine.

    Who is the narrator?

Of course it’s a woman. We can hear woman’s voice narrates what has happened to us. However, I don’t think the woman is one of the characters in the novel because if it does, I think in the end of the story, the woman would show herself. Maybe, she is one of the witness or people who are involved in Wuthering Heights.

Differences in the movie and the novel

Firstly, the movie was too brief. Yeah, maybe it was adapted, that’s why the director should take only the surface level. No? That’s what I think.

Secondly, there are many incidents where they are not exactly following the novel. One of them is when Heathcliff died; the weather is raining, while in the novel, the weather is windy.

Thirdly, the incident where Catherine died after giving birth. In the novel, Catherine died two hours after giving birth to Cathy, while in the movie; she died a few days after that.

And actually, there are major differences between the novel and the movie. The minor characters also didn’t really well portray. So, the lack of interesting characters also made this move kind of boring, in my opinion.

Introduce movie or novel 1st in classroom?

Novel should come first. Movie is just like a supplement for the students. After they have read the novel, and they didn’t understand, watching movie would be the best option. Moreover, in the movie, for sure there are many important parts will be left out so that the movie looks nice or not too long. Reading the novel can make students think and maybe they will come with a different conclusion or thoughts.

  55. 1. Who is the narrator in the movie?

it is still unclear who is the narrator in the movie but I strongly believed that Zillah is the narrator in the movie. The woman must be her because she knows too much about the family.

    2. There are a lot of differences compared to the novel. Some elements are being taken out from the novel to make the story more interesting and also some other elements were put into the movie. These are some differences that I noticed.

    - In the movie it is unclear that who are the narrator but in the novel it is stated that nelly is the narrator.
    - The dog does not appear in the movie like it is in the first chapter of the novel when Lockwood first meeting with Heathcliff.

    3. Movie first or novel first?
    - In my opinion, I would rather watch the movie first so that I can get the general idea of the story. For a person like who does not like reading should get the general idea of the story first so that it would not boring when reading the novel. Sometimes, I cannot focus when reading so by watching the movie first is the best way for me to concentrate.

  56. Hello people,
We definitely know that the narrator is a female!! We hear a female's voice in the beginning of the movie and at the end we see her. She is definitely a female and there is no doubt about it!. But who is she? Quite a number of you guessed that it's Zillah and only one person said that it could be Emily Bronte herself. If you have another chance to sit in and enjoy the movie listen to the words the narrator used, then perhaps you will be able to hit the right spot.

I like few entries here because of the voice they used: Hanis, waterbased, Sporadic Blogger,Najat - to name a few
