Fire and Ice by Robert Frost

Hi Everyone,
If you check on my earlier post it was 10 years ago that I started this blog.  There was no putrablast nor was there google meet or zoom.  I never imagine that in 2020 I'm revisiting my blog as I have gone on vacation (it is supposed to be a permanent vacation from my blog) since 2015. But here I am again in this unprecedented time.  It is so lonely not being able to hear you, your thoughts and see you in person. Nothing can replace face to face classes.

It was frustrating not to get your immediate responses during our google meet.  So could we sort of talk about the poem here. And can we have conversation  rather than a hit and run thing.  I mean let's have  dialogues, conversations and not monologues.

  • Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?,
  • What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?
  • What do you think is the message in this poem?

-personally for me i think that ice is more destructive, if you look at it in a certain way it's a slow and discrete sensation of destruction. it deteriorate slowly (can be connected with mental illness)

-fire, is more lucid towards a person. it like an apocalyptic end that a person can see feel and maybe desire in their life. Ice in the other hand, is more towards feelings such as hatred, indifferent the type of feelings that you personally can feel.

-the poem is trying to convey the message of what might humanity leave us with either the capability of hatred just like ice or by desire and physical destruction just like the fire and both are destructive towards the mankind.

  2. It's about the end of the world. The either ends in fire or ice. but ultimately, the world will perish. from what I've seen in the poem, fire represents desire, and ice represents hatred. It could mean an expression of the heart, fire often relates to burning passion, and ice relates to cold hearted. The message in the poem? no matter what kind of heart you have, when the world ends, it ends no matter in fire or in ice.

    Cheers,

    1. In my opinion, ice is more destructive than fire. Fire can be physically seen as dangerous, but ice is much more scarier. To put into perspective, a scenario where we have someone who has anger problem, who keeps on spitting madness and also a person who seems calm but very very distant and cold inside. The person with fire always shows his anger but the one with ice keep it to themselves and they can be revengeful. Thus i think ice is more destructive than fire.

    2. Fire is related to desire, destruction while ice is related to coldness.

    3. This poem is about how we thought the world will end, it can either be destroyed by desire or hate. There are many kinds of people in the world, some are lead by destruction while the other are fill with hatred. It depends on how a person view it. However, the world can end in both way depends on the emotional energy of the humans.

  4. From my point of view, I feel that ice is more destructive than fire. As some people would normalize fire as something fearful, dangerous, death, however they tend to forget that ice can lead to a bigger destruction because ice slowly sinks while fire could just burn in a blink so less pain is endured. Thinking how ice takes a long time to endure the pain is just scarier. Just like feelings, fire, you might get burn easily but you’ll cool down fast rather than ice, you keep the hatred to yourself and be in pain for a longer period.

Ice refers rigid, coldness. Fire relates a lot to eagerness and love.

What I could think about this poem is that this poem tells how a world would end. We all know some day it will end, but not how and when. The poet is considering whether it’ll end by fire or ice. These two are a correlation with the human emotions which is love and hate. We, human, sometimes tend to let our emotions be in control, however we got to gather ourselves up because here the poem tells that the human emotions determines our surrounding and it might destroy us too if it gets overboard.

  5. Greetings, Madam Ju.

To me, I feel that both ice and fire are equally destructive. Fire may relate to anger and power(but the wrong kind). When one is angry, they tend to do things out of spite and that may result in destruction. Ice represents coldness. Giving someone the cold shoulder, for example. The quiet ones are usually the most dangerous people in this world. They bottle up everything and eventually that leads to seeking revenge or causing pain towards others and even themselves. Both fire and ice wreck relationships, friendships, family connections, professional relations, and many others. BUT, if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Ice.

Personally, I think that the poem is trying to convey a message about the 'death' of proper civilisation. With all the anger and hate in this world, it will definitely cause trouble and end up being the death of us. It's just a matter of HOW it's all going to end.

    1. For me, ice is more destructive than fire. As I connect it with what used to happen around the world like forest burning in Australia, the damaged only left there and the fire didn't spread to the other country. But just imagine, what if the ice in North Pole melts, the whole world will sink. Same goes to human emotions, if someone burned you, you burned them back. So there's no hard feeling. But what if you hold it by youself, the suffered will be unbearable.

    2. Fire- passion, anger, Ice- coldness, hatred

    3. In my opinion, the message of this poem is sooner or later the world will come to an end due to the lost control of human emotion. While, the used of "fire" and "ice" are to emphasize human emotions which both are tend to be destructive and could cause the world collapsed. Especially when it comes to world leaders, every decision and action must be made rationally not emotionally.

    - In my opinion, I think fire is more destructive because fire can melt ice. If thought about it in a physical sense, if we touch fire, we’ll immediately retract our hand because it is very hot to touch, but for ice, we can touch it with our hands for a certain period of time before our hands become numb and we have to let go of the ice. Relating it with personality, I imagined for fire, a person will immediately act on anger, specifically a hot-tempered person, without carefully thinking of the situation that made them angry. For ice, the person might be angry on the inside, but calm on the outside, because they are carefully analysing and thinking about the situation, looking at it in multiple perspective to understand fully about why it happened and soon their anger will dissipate slowly if they chose to.

    - I think metaphorically, fire refers to an active personality where the person will aggressively act on a situation based on what they’re thinking immediately. Ice refers to a more passive personality where the person will think about the situation for a long time before deciding on how to act on it.

    - I believe the message in this poem is that both fire and ice is destructive in one way or another. It depends on the person, whether they favour fire, or ice, and how they interpret both the fire and ice, to end the situation that they got themselves into.

    1. Both are powerful things to destroy the world but I believe that fire is more destructive than ice. For one thing, fire is seen as more deadly. Only a few minutes direct contact with fire can kill anyone in just minutes the same as smoke, they can kill almost as quickly. Compared to ice, ice can be seen as subtle and slow destructive process. For example we can just imagine a forest after a flood and after a fire. A lot of things can still survive with cold or water. However, almost nothing can really survive after being burned.

    2. Both fire and ice are compared with self-destructing human emotions. In this poem, fire refers to desire / greed and ice is referred as hatred.

    3. Even though the poem is very short but it gives so much for us to ponder what really is the meaning behind it. Of course, one might have different interpretations on how they understand it. Perhaps, he wants the readers to realize that uncontrolled human emotions can be the reason that the world ends, and it could be either hatred or desire. Both can contribute to destructiveness. Surely these two emotions can destroy the world if they are not controlled. At the end of the day, if we let one of these emotions get to us, we will destroy everything around us.

    1. I think fire is more destructive because the effect is instant, wild and wide-spread. While ice seemed to be slower and self contained. However both are destructive albeit differ in the speed and area of damage. If we speak metaphorically, active emotions (fire) would destroy us and people around us much quicker than passive emotion (ice) and passive emotion consumed us mostly rather than towards others.

    2. I think fire might metaphorically means active emotions which drive us such as anger, desire, greed. While ice might refer to more passive emotion such as hatred, contempt, and sadness.

    3. In my opinion, the message in this poem is that, the world (might be referring to oneself) will be destroyed by intense emotions and the actions stemmed from it. At first, maybe active emotions can be seen apparently to cause this destruction, but even passive emotions are sufficient to destroy us.

In short, both passive and active emotions are destructive if they are too intense albeit in differing ways and we must know how to leash them in. So that they would not destroy the world (us).

Both fire and ice are destructive. Fire is dangerous, it could hurt you in an instant. However, ice can really destroy you. It would make you cold and comfortable first, the next thing you know, you're numb and won't be able to feel anything anymore and you'd froze to death.

Metaphorically, fire means anger and greed; people who are easily angry and act aggressively. Ice means coldness and hatred; people who tend to keep their anger on the inside, bottle up their feelings.

I think the poet is trying to say that the world will come to an end. It could be because of fire; greed and anger, or because of ice; coldness and hatred. He's trying to say that both things are destructive and so dangerously powerful that it could end the world.

    • Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?,
    - In my opinion, fire is more destructive because it spreads fast and devour anything and everything on its path. Unlike ice that will leave some remains, fire only leaves ashes. Plus, fire is the best choice to erase any evidence.

    • What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?
    - In terms of feelings, fire normally associated with high-spirits, anger, hatred, compassion and empathy while ice associated with cold-hearted, cool, and absence of love.

    • What do you think is the message in this poem?
    - The world destruction is caused by the human themselves. Not the natural phenomenon. The world either ends with human’s anger (fire) or human’s selfishness (ice).

In my opinion, both fire and ice are equally destructive. Fire can burn many things and also melt ice. Then the ice turns into water and can also extinguish the fire. These two things are mutually exclusive. Just two different ways of destroying.

In this poem, the poet wanted to know whether the world would be ended by fire or ice. Then he realized that the world would end no matter how. Fire and ice represent human emotions. Fire means passion and desire and ice means coldness and hate. It is not necessary to be these things, but we can realize that fire symbolizes fierce, strong emotions, while ice symbolizes quiet, deep-seated emotions, but they are all in dark side.

I think this poem conveys the message that human emotions can be destructive whether physically or mentally. The world can be destroyed by fire and ice, just like a man can be destroyed or controlled by desires and hatred.

1.I think both fire and ice are destructive. Fire and ice represent two extremes which on a grand enough scale could cause immense destruction. As we know that ice can preserve but it also can kill and fire may bring warmth to our body but we also know that it can bring the biggest destruction. The point here I think is not which one is stronger, the point here is that how both could destroy something.

2.Fire - desire, passion Ice- hatred, isolation

3.The message in this poem is about the poet trying to tell people how the world is going to end in two possibilities of destruction which is fire and ice or in metaphorically speaking it will end either because of human desire and hate.

    1. In my opinion, fire is more destructive than ice. In physical form, fire is powerful as it can melt ice into water and then it will evaporate the water. This shows that enough amount of fire could make something turn into nothingness. In addition, we need to know that even a small amount of fire would give devastating effects as it spreads very quickly to wherever that it can reach. For instance, in terms of human emotions, a small desire once indulged will later turn into ambitious and dangerous desire.

    2. According to the poem, fire would represent passion and desire. Meanwhile, ice represents hatred and emptiness.

    3. The message that the poet wanted to convey is how uncontrolled human emotions would be destructive. He wants to point out that human mentality or emotions are vital in maintaining the world. Moreover, the poet could be warning the society to make them realize that the real danger to the world is themselves.

    1. People would simply said fire is more destructive than ice since physically it would scared people more. Because in real life, many major accidents that related to fire had been causing major trauma. I guess, ice is like "silence killer". We couldn't see hot and big flames like fire but we know we could froze to death because of it. Fire is temporary while ice could last forever. Like how human emotions are. We could be mad (fire), but for how long? We would hate (ice), and it stays.

    2. If fire and ice were to be expressed metaphorically, i would express fire as desire (passion) and ice hate (reason).

    3. The poet wanted to show the connection and how important it is to keep balance between both fire and ice in life. It is salient to be passion and to be hateful. And the poet wanted to show how menacing it would turned out if both emotions is not deal in balance.

  16. In my opinion, fire and ice are just like Yin and Yang. All they need is balance in order not to be destructive yet can be equally destructive in their own ways if there is an imbalance. Similarly to Yin, fire commonly associated with negative principle, desire while Yang represents more positive principle on the surface just like ice even though as a matter of fact ice can be as destructive as fire if there is no balancing. Indeed the inability to control and disequilibrium between the two elements, fire and ice can lead to destruction, to take example of chemical imbalance in body that can cause illness, the same goes for the world if one of the element excessive and cannot be controlled to keep the stability.

Metaphorically speaking from the poem I believe that the fire represents excessive desires while ice associated with hatred that eventually will be able to destroy the world.

I reckon that we need to see the good in the bad, the bad in the good of both elements as fire (desire) and ice (hatred) can be equally destructive. Take the analogy of a candle for instance, small fire or flame (desire) of the candle able to light the darkness but on the other side if the fire cannot be controlled and get bigger, it will burn us. We need to see the good of desire but never forget about the bad at the same time. Also, I believe that Robert Frost highlights a message about how the world will come to an end, sooner or later either caused by desires or hatred as everyone tend to have desire and feeling hatred in themselves but still it is up to themselves on how to balance and control in order to make sure their world will not come to an end (bring destruction to them).

1, which is destructive? Fire or ice?

From the poem stance, the ice is destructive because ice is cold and harsh-feeling when holding in the hand. The normal saying is that cold like ice, which means the icy cold could kill off everything, which I agree on this. What is more, the ice is only a surface that is smoothy and beautifully seeing. A Lot of people only see the surface of the ice. They don’t know what layered beneath the ice. It might be hiding a secret. Only when the ice melt do people can see what is inside. So it is scary.

The reason why I don’t say fire is destructive is because fire burn down everything, at the same time, it builds on everything as well:) the fire, it kills physical form of everything. But the will of spirit is lifted up. Therefore, fire seems like destructive, but actually it will endlessly decomposing and burning in circle.

    2. What do you think about fire and ice in metaphor?

In both way, I think fire and ice symbolize the ambivalent feeling, which makes things uncontrollable.

As to fire, I think it metaphorically means desire, lust, rose, cigarette and wildness. The rose leads people to go to the cliff of desire. And then people burns with the wildness and the cigarette on. People could die from the fire, but their spirit always there.

As to ice, I think it symbolizes the abuse, emotionless and ultra-violence. People needs to hold the icy-cold ice chunks to see the inside of the truth, which is cruel. Even though the nerves of hand cannot feel anything with the long time holding that ice, people always waiting for a miracle to happen. This is ultra-violence.

    3. What do you think the message that this poem conveyed to?

I think it tells people live or die. Live in the endlessness of desire like a fire or live in the ultra-violence of the coldness of this world.

    1. I personally believe that ice is much more destructive than fire. Fire is normally associated with raging anger while ice on the other hand us often associated with coldness. Let us envision a situation where someone is experiencing anger. If they channel their anger through the way of fire, people will be able to notice it immediately and they will be able to find the root problem and work to settle the issue. However if they channel their anger through the way of the ice.
They tend to keep their anger inside and let it build up to something even more dangerous.

    2. Metaphorically speaking, I think that fire symbolises destruction in a very obvious way while ice symbolises destruction in a very subtle way.

    3. The message that I managed to gather from the poem is,the responsibility of all disasters that the world is facing actually falls on the shoulders of man; the ones who inhabit this planet.

In my opinion, ice is more destructive than fire. Fire can burn things, but fire can be controlled. But once the glacier melts, this is uncontrollable. The final result is very bad. The land will sink, and the animals will lose their place of life.

Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?

In my opinion, I think ice is more destructive than fire. If we think of fire, it could cause huge disaster in a blink of an eye. Ice is capable of causing disaster too but the destruction might not be as visible and immediate as fire which what makes it more destructive. It definitely can kill us but in a slow and silent way which I believe is more painful.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?

Fire can be seen as anger, desire and passion while ice can be interpreted as coldness, hatred and indifference. In other words, fire symbolises powerful forces while ice symbolises non-aggressive forces.

What do you think is the message in this poem?

I think the poet is trying to deliver a message that the two powerful destructive forces, fire (desire) and ice (hatred) are capable to lead us to the inevitable end of the world. We all have fire and ice inside us. If we let our desire and hatred get the best of us, it is not an exaggeration to say that alone is enough to cause wars between humans. We, the humans with both fire and ice inside us, could be the main cause of the destruction of this world.

  23. Which do you think is more destructive, fire or ice?

For me, through the author's description of ice, I think ice is more destructive because the poet described the power of ice as being able to destroy the world twice.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?

In poetry, the poet compares human nature to ice and fire. These two very opposite elements also represent human desire and hatred. These two human natures also have the power to destroy one person. In my opinion, the poet uses metaphors to let readers know the terrible nature of humanity and educate us not addicted to desire or hate others.

What do you think is the message in this poem?

I think the message the author wants to convey is that fire and ice are like the two extremes of human nature. If you go to either end, you will only be greeted by destruction. Therefore, I think Robert wants to keep people awake and stop the desire and hatred to live a good life.

1.As far as I am concerned, I feel that ice is powerful. Fire can melt ice and turn into water, and water can continue to extinguish. When the fire reached absolute zero, it was impossible to produce fire. Because the molecules are no longer in motion, there is no energy to produce fire.

2.Fire symbolizes passion and desire, ice symbolizes coldness and hatred.

3.Fire and ice are like two poles of human nature. If human beings lose their rationality and go to extremes, the only result is destruction. The author wants to try to keep the world awake, curb desire, stop hatred, and return kindness to the true nature to create a harmonious and loving society.

First and foremost, in my point of view, I think fire is more destructive than ice because it could ruin everything in a split of seconds meanwhile ice may freeze things but the things can be back to normal when the ice melts. Next, metaphorically, I believe that the poet used fire and ice to represent desire and hate, however in my opinion, I would decipher the meaning of fire as fury while ice as solitude. Whenever the word fire comes across my mind, the burning flame always pop up in my head. As for me, it shows an angry soul and hatred. In contradict, ice might be represent loneliness but it also portrays coolness and a calm soul. Last but not least, I personally believe that the message in the poem is; it is not how we live our life in this world, but it is how we end our life leaving this world. There are two ways; fire and ice which I would decode as someone who will end up his life with hatred and destruction, on the other hand, one could leave this world in silent and things will be back to normal after his leaving. Basically it means that he will suffer alone for the sake of other people unlike fire it will leave great impact to other's life even though it is gone.

    1. In my opinion, I believe ice is more destructive than fire. This is because, ice kills silently and shows no symptoms of pain until it hurts people. It is true that a direct contact with fire could kill people and it can destroy all of our possessions in an instant but ice is unpredictable. It causes slow but painful death which I believe is more destructive compared to fire. Fire has a powerful force of destruction where it leaves no trace behind after destroying something. This is why fire is often associated with anger and we can clearly see it on the surface. However, unlike fire, ice leaves trace behind and that is what makes it more dangerous. Ice resembles hatred and we could hardly see it beneath the surface. It lingers and consumes people. Scientifically, a low temperature will result in hypothermia and people with hypothermia are not aware of their conditions because the symptoms occur gradually. It affects the brain and people will not be able to think rationally. In short, I believe ice is more destructive compared to fire because it has a long term effect on people.

    2. Metaphorically, fire refers to excessive desire and anger that can cause destruction directly. Ice refers to coldness, sadness and hatred that can cause destruction indirectly.

    3. I think the message of the poem is that the world could be destroyed in two possible ways. It is up to the mankind to control their emotions because the fate of the world depends on theirs hands; it could be destroyed by their greed or selfishness.

Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?
—I think fire is more destructive, as we know volcanoes, it is a dangerous natural phenomenon, from the birth of the earth, with the earth, those destructive volcanoes can destroy a mountain, a city, even a human species in a flash, its danger we can clearly see.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?
—"Fire and ice" implies the destructive power of "the heat of love or passion and the cold of hate," and makes one feel that "these two extremes encompass everything in life, and life is in between them, and all that is washed away by them."

What do you think is the message in this poem?
—In fire and ice, the power of the lyrical protagonist "I" also contains the power of autobiography. The casual, even flirtatious tone of the first-person speaker belies the profound, understated meaning. The first two lines are understated, "Some say the world will end in fire; / Some say in ice. "at first it seemed to connote only biblical and scientific speculation about the end of the world: the great destruction of the apocalypse or a new ice age. Yet fire and ice, as metaphors of desire and hate, embody the Aristotelian system of ethics that Dante USES to set up hell: the sin of reason against the sin of passion. Frost will fire in relation to the senses, and put it on the top of the poem, a lighter crime: "From what I 've tasted of desire/I hold with those who favor fire." verbs with the senses, although not directly mapped, they are reminiscent of the upper figures of hell.

    1. I prefer ice is more destructive because human ever use fire to banish the beast and warm themselves, it proves fire not only can destroy human but also can help human to live. However, ice do not have the benefit function to help human.

    2. In the poem, fire becomes a metaphor for human desire and ice works as a metaphor for hatred,

    3. It discusses the end of the world, likening the elemental force of fire with the emotion of desire, and ice with hate. Therefore, I think Robert want to express that if human can not control their desire and hatred,or the emotion will destory the world. But people need some desire and hatred because they are not only instinct but also the motivation to live the world

    1. I think that fire is considered to be a lot more destructive than ice. Although both ice and fire are destructive, I believe that much of the catastrophic event is caused by fire. Even during the war, when a soldier finds his comrade caught in fire, he should end the comrade's life immediately by shooting to prevent the comrade from suffering until death.

    2. Metaphorically speaking, fire refers to desire such as greed and jealousy whilst ice can be described as hatred.

    3. I believe that this short poem by Robert Frost contains lots of messages and every reader could possibly interpret it in their own ways. In my opinion, Fire and Ice is about how human emotions can lead to inevitable destruction to the world(themselves). It's more likely to warn us of the destructiveness of these two elements so that we can curb these issues to be able to survive(avoid doom).

    1. In my opinion, I strongly believe the ice is more destructive than fire. The reason why I think this way because ice can be harmful to anyone without notice. Ice has no symptoms of pain until it suddenly causes disaster to human beings. People usually relate fire with something dangerous because of the strong image of the fire that gives effect instantly. However, ice also could kill humans with an unpredictable effect. even though the pace might be slower than the fire. Thus, ice can kill people in a silent way which is more destructive more than anything else.

    2. Metaphorically, fire refers to uncontrolled desire and anger that lead to the destruction immediately. Meanwhile, ice refers to sadness, coldness, and hatred that can create destruction slowly and in a subtle way.

    3. I think the writer is trying to convey that we need to realize that nothing is permanent in this world. Everything will expire either in ice or fire way. As human beings, we should learn to control and balance out the emotions that we feel so that we won't get involved to the selfish matters.

-Personally, I think fire is more destructive than ice. Fire spreads fast and destroy God’s creation within seconds. Fire can reduce an entire forest to a pile of ash and charred wood. It's also a terrifying weapon, with nearly unlimited destructive power. Fire kills more people every year than any other force of nature.

-Fire is a feeling of desire, passion and compulsion. Fire is an element on earth and in the spiritual realms. It is a source of energy that requires careful moderation and control to avoid the feeling of “burn out”. Meanwhile, ice means changes in life. Water needs to reach until certain temperature to become solid ice. Humans make changes when they meet at a critical point of their life.

-After reading the poem, a few questions that pop in my head : “does it matter whether the world ends with fire or ice?” and “ why prefer one way or another?” . I think there are two main message the poem is trying covey . First, fire and ice are both equally destructive. If the world comes to an end, whether with fire or ice, there are absolutely nothing we can do to stop it. We can’t change our fate no matter how hard we try to avoid it. Secondly, our perspective and view on things depends on which side we stands on. We view things differently once we step back and see things in different angle.

I think this poem main message is to highlight the fate of the world. What will happen at the end of the world? What is the cause of destruction of the world? People is wondering if it is more likely to be destroyed by fire or ice. Some say ice and some say fire but the poet provide his personal opinion on the his on the question of the end of the world. At first he believes that the world must end in fire as he relies on the impression and destructive of fire from desire and passion, but the he compares it with ice and he acknowledges that ice is cold and define hatred. He changes his mind by concluding that fire and ice is equally destructive and can let to the end of the world. I personally both of this element is destructive but if we get the the right balance of both element, it will be great harmony just like yin and yang. Even water can be destructive like Tsunami.

    1. To me , both are equally destructive depending on the place and situation given to the both of them.In the right place and the right time. Both can be the most destructive force.Let's take an example in the sinking of titanic,it was due to the iceberg that they sank.A fire burning in a forest is far more destructive rather then a fire burning on a gas stove controlled by a professional chef.

2.Fire is usually related to passion/burning desire/rage/wrath while Ice is hatred/coldness/despair/desolation.

3.I believe what the poet want to convey is how we perceive things the way it is.Fire and ice can be a friend where it could help us if we used it the right way and managed to control it.However,it could also become a foe if we did not manage to control it.TO view things in different angle is what the poet wanted to convey.

  36. 1. To me personally, fire is more destructive than ice. We can see it with our own eyes. There are accident out there where forest fire happen and wreck havoc to it surrounding. Our house could be on fire as well if we took safety lightly. The damage that fire do to our body is also unbearable. We rarely see an accident involving an ice element.

    2. Fire usually related to the feeling of anger and sometimes fire is related to passion. Meanwhile ice can be related to sadness and sometimes related to feelings.

    3. The poet want us to become more careful with our surrounding and in this case maybe with the people around us. Fire can be a friend when it is small in size but it could be our foe when it becomes bigger and may as well threatening our life. Ice may sound a bit more subtle and calm but in truth, if the ice become to cold than it could hurt us more than we could imaging.

    1. From my point of view, I believe ice has more destructive ability than fire. Because, I think generally, ice is something that most of the people like because of its coolness and refreshing ability. Because of their likeness towards ice, they do not realize that ice could be destructive and could actually hurt more than fire, which some people perceive as enemy. When talking about pain, it hurts more when it comes from someone or something that you do not expect at all, and in this case, its ice. To add, as far as I concern, fire could destroy and killed people instantly. Almost in a blink of an eye and when it is in its high destruction mode, it changes everything into ashes. As for ice, its unpredictable. You never know what will happen and it always, leave traces behind, causes people to suffer more, even after the destruction take place.

    2. Metaphorically, fire refers to anger and human desire which causes destruction to happen in an instant. On the other hand, ice refers to excessive hatred that have subtle destruction power to the world. It destructs slowly but surely.

    3. I think the message of the poem is that be it by the power of fire or the power of ice, the world will still comes to its end as both of them have almost the same destruction ability. Destruction is something that happens everyday, briefly, it is not something that we can avoid. But, it may be important to find balance between fire and ice to lessen the destruction caused to the world.

    1. I personally think fire is more destructive than ice. Yes ice is like the silent killer as it looks calm before it actually destroying things but it will take time to be that harmful. While the fire can just vanish everything in seconds. Plus the damages done by the ice mostly can be rescued even though it won't be in the best condition for sure, but fire they can burn till it completely disappeared.

    2. I personally think fire and ice metaphorically refer to fatal destruction but in different forms. Fire is like the power that obviously will directly hurts and kill people while ice is the power that raise the urge to destroy something or make people to kill someone. US cops is the perfect symbolism for fire, they kill people by their own hands and their medias are the ice; spreading hatred to particular community which end up denying their rights and ruining their life. The ice also can be representing the greed of the higher-ups that only benefits them and their circles while the rest have to suffer working their whole life to make ends meet. Simpler words, ice is the capitalists who eats up the poor and don't give a damn about them.

    3. I think the message of the poem is the world will eventually end in disaster. If it's not because of the nature, the mankind will take the lead to bring hell to the world. If we want the better ending, we are the one who have to make a change. Be good, be nice to everything, to everyone. Be the one who bring the lights to others, not the one who put the others into the darkness

    1. Both have the power to be immensely destructive. Ice can preserve, but it also can kill and fire can bring warmth but it can also bring great destruction. However, from my point of view, I think fire is more destructive than ice because ice can’t put out a fire unless it melts however if you put fire on ice the ice cube will quickly melt. Direct contact with a rampant fire will destroy anyone and turn it into ashes in just minutes.

    2. Fire represents the human desire just like how the poet stated in the third line and fourth line “From what I’ve tasted of desire/I hold with those who favor fire." Ice, on the other hand, represents hatred like stated in the sixth and seventh lines "I think I know enough of hate/To say that for destruction ice"

    3. I think the poet tried to convey that the world will end in either desire or hatred which many acts can be committed under them.

Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?,

Fire and ice is both destructive. However for me, I think fire is more destructive than ice. This is because fire can be felt and act so much faster than ice. For example, if we have a lighter on and put our hand in the fire, we will instantly draw back our hand because it burned our skin and it instantly hurt. However this is different when we hold an ice cube in our hand. The coldness and pain will come eventually but it did not hurt as much as fire did. And if we image a fire lighting up a tree in the forest, the fire can spread and burn others trees too quickly hence causing destruction to the life of the forest, no matter if it was a tree or an animal. Plus, if we put fire and ice side by side, fire will melt the ice. Hence, I think fire is more destructive than ice. Unless, there is too much ice then ice can beat fire.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?

Fire refers to desire and danger while ice refers to hatred and selfishness.

What do you think is the message in this poem?

It is clear that this poem is talking about how the world would end one day. There are people who say the world will end in fire and there are also people who say it will end in ice. The poet sides with fire but agree that ice could cause destruction too that would end the world. However, in my opinion, the hidden message that is in this poem is talking about the dualism and polarities in life. This is because in life, there is always the element of dualism in everything. For example, when there is light, there will also be darkness. When there is love, there will also be hate. And in this case, when there is fire, there is also ice. These dualities in life are opposite to each other. We cannot ignore it because it is how life is suppose to be, just like how when there is life or birth of something, death will also follow it until their last breath. So in this poem, in a way, is reminding us about the polarities in life and how our life is connected to it. This world too is no exception. One day it will also end whether its in fire or ice, and no matter how much effort we put in to save it.

    1. From my stance, both fire and ice have the power to be useful but also have the power to be immensely destructive. Ice can preserve, but it also can kill. Fire can keep us warm but can greatly cause destructive too.

    2. Fire and ice completely up to interpretation of a person. In my opinion, fire may symbolise destruction and anger, as it can easily get out of control and burn anything in its path and it may also symbolise passion as it burns deep within a person. While ice symbolise coldness in our actions, thoughts, or feelings. But it can be melt without proper measures.

    3. In Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, the Fire stands for passion and how people act towards each other (being very aggressive). Ice means people being hostile to each other, also cold to others feelings, kind of not caring at all. What Robert Frost meant to say was that a lot of people suppose the agressive behaviour will be the end (wars, etc.). But it actually only takes people not giving a damn about each other. And Frost's idea of both being about the same and having little preference represents that good and evil might be more similar than we usually think.

Come to realization, I personally think that both the fire and the ice has its own ways when it come to the destruction but I undoubtedly think fire is the best choice when it come to the question which one is more destructive. Ice could be melted in the right hands and we still can cope with it but if it is a fire, small or big it is still a fire. Best fit with the characteristics of fire which is hot and fiery make it more obvious that fire is more destructive.

Fire and ice are the dichotomy in this poem, as both of the element is totally opposite each other. Though the poem presents "fire" and "ice" as dynamic metaphors for "desire" and "hate," in the third line we see a very simple implied metaphor which to taste desire.

I think this poem is written about destruction, about the inevitable demise that hatred and obsession that will bring out the destructiveness of it. Should a person be driven by an unhealthy obsession, then their demise will be fiery and quick.

1.In my opinion, fire is more destructive. In terms of pure fire and ice, ice only makes the object freeze, and actually retains its original image on the surface. But fire can turn everything into ashes
2.As an allegory of desire, the human emotions and passions associated with fire are rich and complex. In addition to positive meanings such as brightness, enthusiasm and exuberance, the negative emotional factors associated with the fire of desire include jealousy, lust, selfish interests and anger. As an allegorical body of hatred, "ice" can make people associate with indifference, gloom, evil and so on.Frost arranged the two opposite poles of fire and ice, creating the image of the two poles of human emotion. The philosophy reveals that people's emotion and passion develop to opposite poles and reach the acme of emotion, both of which are destructive and destructive. The pursuit of the best and the hatred of the worst and the ugliest should be restrained.
3.In fire and Ice, Frost expresses the unity of opposites in the laws of the universe.
In nature, Yin and Yang, positive and negative, light and dark, right and wrong, beauty and ugliness are objective beings like fire and ice.
The good and evil, love and loathing, joys and sorrows in the social and spiritual fields constitute a world of mutual exclusion, separation, mutual negation and mutual connection, interdependence and mutual penetration.
Unity of opposites is the fundamental law of the universe, which is one of the philosophical inspirations given to us by Fire and Ice.

Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?
-To answer whether fire or ice is more dangerous, I think we need to go back to the spectrum, and anything that exists on the far end of both of it is equally dangerous. Fire is fast, ruthless, and destroys anything that is in its wake but ice does its destruction in the complete opposite, slow, sinister and silently. Personally, I think ice is more destructive. You’re probably thinking you could handle the cold, because you are not seeing any difference to your body; to compare if you were lit on fire. But you’re suddenly not able to move any part of your body and next thing you know, the cold temperature is blocking your airways making it harder for you to breathe.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?
-In my opinion they represent human nature itself, our emotions, thoughts and actions. Everything that we do and everything that we are can exist on the varying spectrum of fire and ice.

What do you think is the message in this poem?
-A relevant example would be racism. It can be manifested through both fire and ice, yet still have a horrible and completely harmful outcome. Fire being physically or verbally abusing someone because of their race, or even socially excluding them from the day to day social, economical and political platforms. The effect would sting right then and there, and would almost immediately cause harm. Ice’s manifestation of racism would be through the silent systemic oppression of certain races, where it is slow and unhurried, yet would affect generations down the road.

Putting this into the context of the poem, it means that when pondering about what ultimately would cause the destruction of humanity and modern civilization, both overt and covert causes would eventually lead to it. Fire and ice both have the capabilities to do that work.

    1. Fire and ice can be useful and can be destructive as well if it occurs in a large scale. However, I would give my vote to the ice. Ice is cool and kill silently, it does not give any significant signs to people before it kills unlike fire. To me, it is more menacing compared to fire. Ice also takes a long period of time to kill, and this will cause more pain to the body. Hence, I think ice is more destructive as it kills silently and slowly.

    2. Based on the poems, I think fire referred to a strong desires with rage and greed. The opposition to fire is the ice that is equate to hatred. Both of this emotions can cause harm to the human, it could destroy and cause chaos. Feeling of intense dislike could isolate people from one another and create negative environment that will harm the world.

    3. Hence i think the poet trying to convey a message that excessive feelings or uses of something could destroy the world and the humankind. Hence, we should be moderate in everything we do and we should focusing on what is the best way to stop something bad to happen instead of giving much attention to how it happens.

  47. Which do you think is more destructive; fire or ice?
To be honest, I find both to be destructive. They are both powerful. However, if I have to choose one, I would choose ice. Fire could destroy us instantly however ice kills in silence. We would be in tremendous pain before we can completely die. Thus, ice is more destructive.

What do fire and ice refer to metaphorically?
In my opinion, they are our emotion. Fire is burning desire- our spirit while ice is the coldness or hatred we feel towards someone or something.

What do you think is the message in this poem?
I think this poem is trying to tell us on how the world is going to end- it could be either by fire (hot burning desire) or ice (coldness and hatred) or perhaps, by both ways. The poet is telling us of how much control we have in this life; and that to keep the balance of life. Though ice seems colder than fire, it could kill us too. All in all, these emotions are for us to control or else we will be destroyed by them.

  48. I think fire is more destrutive than ice. Though can be controlled, it becomes very dangerous and destructive as soon as we lost control of it, which happens pretty often. Fire is unpredictable, it feeds on almost everything in its path, and it will only grow bigger and bigger unless a stronger force is applied to extinguish it.

In my opinion, both fire and ice is a symbol of how humankind can destroy the world, just with different methods and endings. Fire represents desire, lust for power, passion, anger, and violence. Ice however represents the more subtle destruction yet equally destructive as fire. It represents hatred, ignorance, indifference, and the lack of voice against evil in the world.

The message that I get from this poem is a warning about possibilities how the human race could bring the world to its end. "Fire and ice" are both human nature that is equally destrucive, no matter the ending.

  49. 1. In my opinion, fire is definitely more destructive because it is dangerous for it spreads fast and has the ability to destroy everything that comes on its way.

    2. In my opinion, fire is usually linked to anger, revenge and determination while ice is usually connected to sadness and cold-heartedness.

    • What do you think is the message in this poem?
    - From this poem, the message that the poet is trying to convey is the destruction that happens in the world is actually caused by humans. The fire and ice itself shows the current human nature that can destroy the world for their own benefits.
