Literature for Children is the Answer?

The advent of KSSR and KSSM in 2011 marks a new beginning in the education landscape of Malaysia. Children  as early as Year 1 are given the taste of literature.  They read and listen to literary materials deem appropriate for young learners.  Why do you think the move to include literary materials for young learners is made? Do you think we are going towards the right direction in prescribing literature for learners in primary education?

  1. Yes, I do think we are going the right direction in prescribing literate for young learners. Although the progress is slow. But with the right amount of exposure to the teachers first, and the parents seconds. There are so many literary materials to be found easily online. And many children as early as 5 years old know how to Google. So the exposure is there. Learning literature is fun. It also helps their vocabulary and they will understand and speak better.

    1. here i think beside introduce the young learners to the language itself, it also create a healthy bound between them and their parents. where they can sit together and read the poems, nursery rhymes or even fables that had been taught by teacher in school.

    2. And right now, so many literary materials have been commercialized into movies, cartoon, dramas, video clips etc. So the young learners are more exposed to literature. And that's is in my opinion where's the move have started.

      I acknowledge the fact that a child who is as young as a - five - year old being able to lay his / her hands on internet is no longer flabbergasting. Everything is within a push of a button. Tonnes of literary materials are accessible online. Through supervision and assistance by parents, they ( both the children and parents ) are able to gain a lot of benefits. Knowledge deemed appropriate is easily gained through excitement and by appreciating the moral values. Hasmahani has also mentioned commercialisation of literary materials have further enhanced the comprehension of children through dramas and video clips, among others. I am of same mind as this has helped tremendously in apprehending literary materials way better.

  2. Literary materials are made for young children to make their lesson more enjoyable and interesting. It helps them to recall their previous knowledge of stories and tales that they had heard from their parents or teachers.They will be able to grasp vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar more easily through literary materials.
    I support the Education Ministry to go forward in prescribing literature primary school education. This will enable young learners to be more practical and fluent in the English language. They will be more confident in the usage of the language.

    The move to include literary material for young learner is made to create positive attitude towards literature which will develop the pupils interest towards reading. This will also reflect on their life time reading by giving them the early exposure. By doing this we are going towards the right direction in prescibing literature for learners in primary education. By learning literature in primary school will help them to understand better about the different social skills and nature childrens' concept of time. The most important is that it help children cope with the loss of loved ones.

    1. Yes I agree with Shanti, usually the literary material contains positive moral values. I also believe that reading or listening to positive literature edifies young learners that good deeds to others will be rewarded. Thus this will help their social skills and behavior to others.

    I do agree with my friends' opinions. beside we encourage them to read and it contains positive moral, most of the literature materials will create 'a world of hope', which it is so close to the younger. So beside create a positive attitude it also can lead our students to become a good citizens in the future.

      Materials big in high level is not the main aspect.The Teacher should be able to design various methodology(activities) and work in par to the education ministry to make the KSSR programme a success to develop this children to achieve the aims.

      I agree with Indra that materials big in high level is not the main issue. It is the teacher's duty to adapt according to the children's ability. We cannot use this as an excuse from not teaching the subject.

      If the material does not suit our culture, as what suhaila hamli as mention, it is fine because we teachers can change them to our culture by editing them.

      I do agree that any literary materials which are high in level can be adapted according to the level of the pupils. The main purpose of using literary materials are to enhance and enrich pupils' knowledge in language. Pupils would enjoy to learn the language as it would be more interesting.

      You have raised a valid issue. But, which of the prescribed nursery rhymes are of local culture? I see a number that is considered inappropriate. I think if parents see the list they might raise their objections in their PTA meeting.

    6. As teachers we are the one who can simplified/make sure the literary materials suitable for our young learners. Bear in mind, literary material is not just for reading only. for example, we can do role play based on the literary materials given, meaning more children involvement. Thus this will help their communication skills and social skills.

      Some of the nursery rhymes which are of Malaysian cultures ( manifestations ) and flavours are namely Henjut-henjut Semut ( Bobbing Ant ), Lompat Si Katak Lompat ( Leap, Little Frog Leap ), Buai Laju-laju ( Swing, Swing Away ), Can Mali Can ( Oye, Oye Ola , Pok Amai - Amai ( Clapping Clap ), Jong-jong Inai ( Henna Laden Junk ) and a few others. Honestly, as far as my memory serves, I grew up listening and enjoying these rhymes which some of them, are still fresh in my mind. These rhymes have been translated into English Language to enliven and resuscitate the local nursery rhymes and present them in multimedia format to capture the children's interest. Frankly, the government is trying all ways and means to revive this concept through MBMMBI (To Uphold Bahasa Malaysia and To Strengthen The English Language ) policy. Is this not something applaudable and worthy of high praise? I sure think so. As for the suitability of the rhymes, we are always welcomed to justify the appropriateness of the literature element we choose to present. This is where the teachers step in. Indeed, this is a sure success through cooperative effort.

      Adding on to my previous post, the nursery rhymes mentioned earlier were selected from the book Dendang dan Dondang Sayang compiled by Puan Azah Aziz and Dr. Ariff Ahmad. The melodies of some of the nursery rhymes were recomposed by Dr. Ariff Ahmad, a distinguished local musician attached with the Department of Culture, University Malaya.

      As we are aware, Information Technology ( IT ) literacy among children is growing rapidly. Consequently, it is vital for us to benefit from this golden opportunity to popularise and conserve indigenous children's nursery rhymes among children of the new generation. I strongly believe it is possible and attainable.

    Literature is one way of teaching pupils in primary school to enjoy reading. Introduction to literature is also a way of encouraging pupils to pick up a book and read. This include reading stories especially stories with moral values or stories that relate to their daily life. I believe the move to include literary materials for young learners will help them in learning the language more effectively.

    The move to include literary materials for young leraners is made to encourage and enhance children reading in order to make them master in it. Most of the literary materials are interesting.Due to this , it will make the children eager to know about that even they are weak in reading. So starting from this point , the children itself will urge themself to learn it.Furthermore nowadays children are more exspose to something new parallel to our cybernatic life..

      I would like to include more that a childs social development will grow if they are exposed to the introduction of literature.It also develop some skills of these young ones to solve productivity in one's own life.The academic development and concept will be better.I also agree what some of them say that the materials do not suit our culture.Well the teacher should play their role to modify materials that will suit the learning proses.

    The literary materials for young learners is made to make the teaching and learning process more efficient and challenging.The ability to grasp will be more valuable and quicker.The understanding of the concept is usually is in an undirect manner which will help the child, a fluency in reading.

    In my opinion,the move to include literary materials in KSSR and KSSM is to enable young learners to appreciate and expose them to literature such as novels, plays, dramas and poems at a tender age. As we know, young children are more receptive so, if they are exposed to literature which is considered as works of art, they will be trained to appreciate and enjoy reading novels, poems, plays or dramas written by famous authors.In this way, children will also be able to master their reading skills and this will instil in them the habit of reading. Nevertheless, I agree with Indra Gandhi that the literary materials must be simplified and the vocabulary used must be according to the children's level.Thus, the move to introduce literature component to primary students is very much lauded.

    Education Minister has made the right choice. For that reason, pupils are lucky to learn English Literature as early as in Year 1.Students who study English Language that emphasis on reading and writing skills, sometimes fail to see the point of studying listening and speaking skills. But now in KSSR, students are introduced range of aspects not only of the English Language but also English culture through literature. Therefore it helps student to develop interest in books and reading. Besides that, students also could develop their listening skills through literary materials such as nursery rhymes, fairy tales, folk tales and fables which now already have been applied in all the National Textbooks. So I think the move to include literary materials for young learners are made to expose students to a range of literature during their school days. Moreover, literature can provide students with a fresh and creative angle to approach their studies and lives in general. I believe that we are on the right track towards prescribing literature for learners in primary education.

    I am strongly with the above ideas here. The literature should be studied by the children from primary Year 1. Although it may be difficult for the Year 1 student during the learning, but, actually this learning may be a good way to learn the allusions of the English culture in different aspects. Besides, with studying in literature, student may also improve their vocabulary and phrases, this will enhance their writing skills. On the other hands, this also will increase the students' interest in books and reading.

      It's true. From my experience, I found that the high level pupils always enjoy the literature but not for the slow learners. They are facing the hard time to feel the excitement in reading the stories or reciting the poems as they are having difficulties in understanding and using the language. However, as time goes by, I found that they eventually improved they reading skill and vocabulary.

    3. Actually, the teachers are resonsible to whether or not the children enjoy the literature no matter what level they may be. Teachers must learn how to adapt to their pupils needs. I have been teaching the lower level classes as well as the best classes and I do have to say children are the same. As long as you can find the materials that can captivate their interest, they will enjoy their literature lesson. We must educate and improve ourselves first before we judge the children for not being able to understand our lesson.

    Literature, which generally means 'things made from letters' or art of written work, become difficult to learn when a person grown up. The right timing to get this spread across is at early childhood. During this stage, a child eagers to learn new things. With right intonation and blend of literary material in the teaching, the learning progress by a child will improve be tremendously. The literary material in form of rhymes, poems, stories,songs, and others indirectly improve the langugage among students. Here student can be seen active participating in class compared to passive during chalk-and-talk. This the reason why the move to include literary material for young learners was made.

    By virtue of the above, i think we are on right direction in prescribing literature for learners in primary education. Besides getting attention from the student, this also can improve vocabulary, proficiency, communication and language as whole.

      I agree with Sripriya, a child eager to learn new things. It is true that a child can learn many languages when they are young. Their brain can absorb everything that they see and hear. That is why it is important to teach the right thing to a child when they are young. By giving good examples from the story that they read will lead to a healthy society.

    Here is another point that i want to highlight. Introducing literature as early as possible will list out huge amount of advantages that already been stated by my friends. The more the child expose the better it will be because it make them to think from every aspect before they come up with a solution. This is what we call critical thinking. On the other hand, these children will be more creative because they will think beyond other children. Their imaginary is wonderful. These are the children will lead the country to a better future.

    As we know children as early as Year 1 are exposed to literature. They read and listen to literary materials.

    Most of the children do not like to read nowadays unless they are assigned to do so in school. The love of reading should be instilled in children from a very young age and school is the best place to start. By introducing literature to children in school we can nurture the love of reading.
    Besides that reading can also help children later in their writing.Children who have been exposed to quality writing such as fairy tales,folk tales and fables would be able to learn and know more vocabulary which can help them to enhance their creativity in writing.
    Therefore in my opinion teaching literature in primary school is the best way to nurture reading habit among young children as they more exposed to modern gadgets like television and video games at home.
    Definitely the move of introducing literature among young learners can help to nurture reading culture in our society in future.

    1. I agree with your opinion. I found out that children nowadays are not familiar with all those famous fables or fairy tales. They don't even bother to read the books. They rather like to watch cartoons or read comics than to read storybooks.

    In my opinion, it’s easier to say than done. I think it’s still too early to know whether the implementation of literature in the KSSR has really given an impact to the pupils in primary school. Although I must say that the pupils especially from the weaker class are very fond of listening to stories even though sometimes they don, t even understand any of them. All I know is that everything depend on us, the teachers, to make literature such a fun thing to know and learn. Even though some of them couldn’t understand the stories just by reading them especially the weaker pupils but we as teachers have our gestures to use and pictures to show and use our fullest effort to make them understand and finally they will realize that knowing literature is actually fun… 

      As to Aishah's opinion, i would like to suggest to use the big book concept to the weaker pupils. The pictures are big, words are printed large and moreover the book is big. I am sure the pupils will enjoy it.

Pupils from weaker class are very eager in learning (literature) especially in listening to stories even though they can't read it.At this part teacher's will play role model by simplified the stories toward the pupils ability. At last the lesson will be more enjoyable and the weaker pupils able to learn the lesson.

      yes that's true sripriya..most of literature pictures are colourful and beautiful..especially in folk tales and fairy tales story which is so attracting and being an idol to children. Even they did not know how to read but with fancy and attracting design will encourage and stimulate pupils mind and try to read it....so of course teachers need to make it more practical according to their pupils level...

      I agree with Shanthi. Big books are good materials to teach reading lesson. Yesterday I have learned how to make big books in an English workshop. Actually we don't even have to spend a lot of money to buy those expensive books in the stores out there. We can do our own big books based on any available storybooks. We can choose any stories which are suitable with our pupils' level.

    6. Farina and Suhartini... Two of you have hit the nail on the head. Our own big book will be in language that can be easily understood by the pupils. It is very simple with repeating story lines which allow easy participation of pupils, for example The Gingerbread man and also Three Bears. Teachers can bring in the ' home environment' to the classroom by asking the pupils to sit on the mat in front of us.

    Yes, we are going towards the right direction by introducing literature in primary year 1. But, we have to make sure the content of the literature is understandable and easy to be capture by the student. Besides that, the literature content should interesting and fun to learn by the student so they will keen on learning more in literature rather than it is just merely part of the day to day studying material.

    1. Although most of us agree that introducing literary materials in primary education is on the right track, but a lot of factors have to be considered to make it successful. I agree with Michelle Tan that the literature content must be according to the children's level,interesting and enjoyable. The question is the implementation. How are the teachers going to carry out their lessons to make it interesting and arouse the eagerness of the children to listen and think beyond the line and open up their imaginary world. What are the activities that teachers need to carry out to achieve their objectives? Thus, to make this implementation successful, teachers must take steps to ensure children enjoy their lessons and not merely a day to day studying material as stated by Michelle Tan.

      I agree with you about the quality of implementation of this literature programme for the primary pupils.So all the English teachers must be equipped with the needed and suitable skills for them to teach literature in primary school especially the Year One pupis.Teacher will not face any problem teaching literature to the primary pupils fram city areas with a good fundamental background of English standard but it is a different stories when teaching literature to the pupils from the rural areas without a good background of English standard.Teacher will encounter a tougher tasks in implementing this prgramme for the pupils in rural areas.So I also strongly aagree with Michelle Tan regarding the suitable content or reading materials in literature is an important factor for the pupils in primary school to achieve the objectives of fun learning process.

    My personal opinion, I don't think we doing the right way. We should focus on the basic. By setting the high standard hoping that some will grab half, some get quarter and some will get all and some will get none is the not the right strategy in teaching. Start with basic, step by step, slow is fast, bite what we can chew for the benefit of younger children.

      And of course we mustn’t forget the important skills that we need to concentrate more on…. Listening, speaking, reading and writing, right. The literature part is one of the sub techniques that lighten up the teaching of English…. of course we shouldn’t make it our main priority… I didn’t say that literature is not important, it’s just one of the techniques. There is no right or wrong in using any kind of ways of techniques to teach English.

    The introduction of Literature among children in lower primary schools has open a new era in the education world in our country. As an English Language teacher, I strongly believe that through literature, we as adults will be able to enter the children's mind with interesting tales, melodious songs and rhymes and even funny poems.In the new KSSR syllabus, our daily lesson starts with literature elements that brings out the interest among the children.

    The moral of the society is fast declining. Everyone is pursuing materialistic gains. Quantity is of top priority and quality is fast forgotten. Learning English becomes just learning the language literary without appreciating its aesthetic values. Most people do not like reading books anymore unless they were forced to. That's why the move to introduce literary material is made.
    With the introduction of literature in primary one, pupils will be taught the beauty of the language and its intrinsic values. Children at this tender age will be able to grasp the language easily. Reading will be fun and educational not only mentally but spiritually. Not only do they have fun learning listening and speaking, reading and writing, they will also learn moral values and social skills. They learn to understand people better and form better bonding with their parents and peers.
    I think we are right in prescribing literature in primary education. We have to upgrade the standard of English in Malaysia and save the moral of our society before its too late.

    In my point of view inter grating literature elements in early education is indeed a great step taken by the Ministry of Education. As we all know , children enjoy doing fun things, so with the teaching of songs, poems, nursery rhymes and many more teaching and learning automaticly becomes a fun filled experience.This is for the teacher and child both, from boring textbooks to interesting chants,songs,poems,fairy tales,folktales and many more. Pupils not only are confined to learning the language but also at the same time are enriched with moral values. The use of literature items mainly enhances language proficiency and fluency. From 'chalk and talk' to a classroom of drama,role play,coral reading and many more interesting and fun filled activities is another way literature has changed our English lessons. Nothing is archived overnight, but the step by step approach taken by the Ministry along with the support of the teachers will be a success in the near future.The use of literature in primary schools is a motion I strongly belief in.

    I also agree to introduce literature for the primary pupils as early as seven years old.They need to be exposed with the interesting and more fun reading materials for them to improve their English.Introducing literature for the primary pupils is a good programme for the primary pupils to do good in English but the ministry must inspect the Engligh teacher to implement the programma in a more achievable goals for example the materials of the reading are suitable for the primary pupils in getting the needed understanding of the reading.

    Literary materials such as fairy tales,folk tales and fables are stories which contains moral values.
    Stories have the power to promote emotional and moral development.
    Therefore I think children's literature is important as it can help students to develop their emotional intelligence and creativity.
    As we know that stories in literature have characters which make moral decisions based on situations.By reading these stories, it enables our students to learn moral values and learn the proper social skills such as good mannerism.
    Therefore in my opinion children's literature helps to nurture the growth and development of students'personality and social skills.

    In my opinion, primary students is not suitable to explored to the literature. According to my experience, some of the students even can't read and write properly. It is a challenging for them to contact with literature before they expert their basic language. Language is the building block of writing; it is word choice, sentence structure, metaphor, phrasing etc. It is also an abstract concept—the mechanism by which the reader engages the text. No matter what’s being read, whether it’s a aesop fables, poetry, fairy tales, folk tales and nursery rhymes, language determines the experience and changes to suit its audience.So,young learners must master their language then can enjoy their literature.

      In my point of view, literature can be taught as early as Year 1. We cannot underestimate the young learners. As a matter of fact, children are better learners. They can easily absorb the information or knowledge that is being taught.We can use a simple short story or perhaps simple nursery rhymes for beginners. For example, teahing alphabets using nursery rhymes like ABC song is not only fun and enjoyable but also enhancing their memorization skill.

      My personal view is that literature is very good for youngsters to learn English language and moral values. Most young students know a lot of classic stories in children’s literature. But not to children with hearing impairment in the classroom, they have little knowledge about literature. It's not easy to teach them to understand the literary materials because they are not strong in English language and lack of vocabulary. They need more attentions and guides to 'listen' to fairy tales and fables. However, they like reading the visual pictures without reading or understanding the texts. Often, teachers tell the stories using sign language by presenting the pictures. Then, teachers try to lead them to read the texts but they will forget (the meaning of) each word they learn. I believe we (special education teachers) need more time to prepare the appropriate materials and effective teaching steps to aid the children learning literary.

    In my opinion, we are in the right direction in prescribing literature for learners in primary education under the new KSSR system. This is because it helps pupils to improve their command of the English Language, such as improve their grammar, vocabulary, pronounciation and language forms and functions. Learning literature is made fun by the teachers by using interesting and attractive materials such as DVDs,big and colourful story books and so on. Thus, this also encourages and motivates pupils to read. as a result, the pupils reading skill is improved too.

    I do believe that we are at the right path in prescribing literature to young children. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe quoted that ' The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation'. The new beginning of literature enables to nourish reading habits and develop thinking skills among children. It is not only about language or characters involved but also priotize the needs of unity, patriotism and togetherness in building one nation as inspired by our beloved Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak in our 1Malaysia slogan. To teach literature for young children is not as easy as ABC. Let us take it as a challenge. Literary materials are able to broaden intellectual horizons among youngsters. Bear in mind that, we are playing a crucial role in preparing them to achieve our Vision 2020 dreams.

Literature is a good technique to teach pupils about the language itself and at the same time to make them familiar to the real life situations. They will learn about grammar and structure, slowly by time, they are exposed to the good and bad characters in real life. I did not mean that we teach them to evaluate people but they will be prepared to face the outside world. It might not as early as year 1 but if teachers manage to deliver them nicely, there should not be a problem.

    Literature plays a big role in our teaching and learning process. We have our points and skills but to strengthen our lesson, we insert the elements of fun learning which involves literature such as fables, short dialogue or even dramas.It is important to make use of literature components to enhance the children's mind and at the same time to make the children enjoys learning the language. As adults, we can enrich the children's mind with imaginary stories, fairy tales that would make them dream and smile lastly giving them the chance to act out in a short drama to boost out their confidence.

    But we need to bear in mind that implementation is the key factor of every success. We can plan in such a way that we feel perfect and solid on paper. It can help them to build their self-esteem through positive role models which can be found in fables, fairy tales and folk tales.     In my opinion, literature should be introduced to children as early as Year 1 or perhaps earlier. That is when they step in kindergarten or pre-school. Early literature can be developed as an important kit for teaching especially teaching languages. For instance, teaching the alphabets would be more fun and enjoyable using nursery rhymes. Another example, it can be a useful tool to improve reading skill among the children through reading story or short narratives as in fables. So, yes we are heading the right track to enhance the learning process in primary education and the school curriculum.

    1. As teacher, we are the one who are responsible in the materials given. Literary texts can be studied in their original forms or in simplified or abridged versions. Even the famous poem, Twinkle twinkle little star that we have been using for young children is also a literacy materials. It's never too early for literature.

It has become the greatest challenge for us, as teachers to capture their interest in reading. That's why we have to do different activity such as singing but using the same material. It is difficult to force them to enjoy reading. But, I don't think they refuse if we ask them to enjoy singing. I'm sure we can make Cinderella story as a song.

When we looked up over the beginning literacy for young learners, we assume it started with exploring the ability to read and write.     I do agree with Zainizam Mahat..In order to learn literature, the pupils need to understand it. The text is more than 8% above their independent reading level (IRL). Research suggest if the text is more than 8% above their IRT, they become cognitively overloaded.( That is,they use too much of their cognitive capacity on decoding words, that there is no capacity left to focus on meaning. The approach to teaching literature is inductive. But, in order for this approach to be effective, children must understand the literature. However, in rural schools literature itself is probably above the pupils' independent reading level. They become cognitively overloaded which means the inductive approach fails.

    I don’t really agree that the pupils should concentrate first on the basic skills before they are having literature. Remember ‘Language acquisition’? It doesn’t really matter if the children don’t understand all the stories heard, as long as we give them a lot of input for them to make their own way in learning. I really believe my ‘Linus’ class can get something from the literature. Maybe they don’t show anything now but deep down they get it eventually.

The most important thing...it meet with the local children's need especially the slow learners. Thanks to my native speaker mentor who had guided us to produce our own big books and taught us the correct way to use it in the classroom as a literacy material. Well, it works for me.

    For me, personally I prefer to work at my own pace. Yes, we are provided with textbook but besides using it, we can always think of other resources too. Using the big book to teach literature is one of the best way to catch the students attention. I don't find it difficult or wrong to take and to have materials from other countries. We can always adopt and adapt and make it ours, the Malaysian way. We just have to make sure literature plays a big role in our classroom and suits it according to our students ability. Let them have fun learning literature, simple and easy ones, bit by bit, step by step. That really means a lot to them.

      I agree with you, Sinisia. But, for my class,it is difficult to use a big book in a class with 50 pupils.Those who sit at the back could not see the words and picture from the big book. So, my method is just download the stories and poem from the internet. Then, show it through the LCD. It is easier for me and clearer for the pupils too. I also agree that it is not wrong to take materials from other country. Pupils can learn about their culture and respect others even they are different races or religions.

      I have been asked this question by my Ketua Panatia during my in-house training KSSR Year 3.So, I answered, we still teach grammar for Year 1 and Year 2 in our lesson indirectly. We don't teach them grammar specifically because the important knowledge they should know in their level are basic vocabulary and learn English with enjoyment throughout the lesson..

    I do agree on the point that a child tends to learn and gain knowledge faster due to their curiosity and ability to absorb fast. It is because of these that they can learn and improve on their language in all aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, skills and etc which counters the fact stated by Farina that high level pupils faced hard time while reading the stories or reciting the poems as they are having difficulties in understanding and using the language.

    Moreover, statistics revealed that Malaysians do not have the habit of picking up a book for leisure reading purposes. By implementing this programme, it would be an opportunity for us to cultivate the reading habit in the hearts of the people which brings in more benefits such as improving their reading and writing skills.

Using literature as a tool for teaching is the best way for pupils to communicate with teacher and read literary materials with enjoyment. Most of the opinions here are showing their agreement of introducing literature to a young chidren.Yes,i do agree with that as well,but the issue here is;are the materials that we are using is a local friendly?.teaching literature is about nurturing a good moral values into our children's heart and soul.During that process,our children's are overloading with a story of little red riding hood,cinderella,jack and the bean stalk etc,and all those fables and fairy are so not local friendly.Yes,some opinions had mentioned about adopt and adapt,but how far and how much we can?before we take any decision on any new things,a further researched should be done.think of good and bad,positive and negative side,because,a young children which is our future hope will be victimized if eveything that we planned goes wrongly.

  65. Yes, i agreed with zainizam. The materials should suit withour culture. We have a lot of our own fables like pak pandir, bawang putih bawang merah etc. I am sure only a few have read this. We have our own values that we should proud off. To retain our culture we must use local product . I have taught literature for second level and the book used totally unrelated with our culture. pupils have difficulties in identifying the place , characters with weird names. So i hope we as teachers, should think before implementing cause whatever we do now will result the future.

    2. maybe we should look at the bright side of things..when i was very young, learning something from a different culture made me even more curious and it made me read even more books to help me understand and it really helped me a lot since my family was not well of and i couldn't afford tuition classes.i can be found almost every weekend at the state library using everyone's library card in my family to borrow books. at that time, it excites to know the name of a country i've never heard of. i would go and find an atlas to look for the location of that particular country.it really depends on the individual about the perception of learning the local literature or the one from another country..which one excites you or me more.. :)

    Among the aims of the Children's Literature Programme are to create an enjoyable learning environment and inculcate the reading habits in young pupils. Let us think out of the box... literary sources for children may include traditional literature ( e.g. folktales, fables, legends etc. ), historical fiction, modern fiction, modern fantasy and also biography. Let the pupils explore the literary heritage while at the same time increasing their awareness of cultural values, history and almost every branch of human knowledge. Bring in stories about Mat Kilau, Kanang Anak Langkau, Dr Mahathir etc..... followed by role plays and dramas....I am really sure we will achieve Vision 2020 successfully.

If we're not comfortable with the foreign's material for they're not 'local friendly', we're free to pick any local stories in English version. I'm sure there are lots of it in our school's library... The issue here is how to get the children to have the interest to read them. They are not interested to read them because it's in English. I'm sure they have read some of the fairy tale stories like Cinderella or Red Riding Hood but they read them in BM. I've read some children's local books.. but still the language they used is more or less like the foreign's book... Not 'friendly' to our pupils. So, that's how the idea of adapt and adopt came. We can also play a role here for example, by reading them the story or telling them the story before we start our lesson. Do it as a routine activity. 5 mins a day if you can. There you are...you have given the pupils a 'taste of literature'.

    Changing the face can change nothing but 'facing the change' can change everything.Literature in KSSR make pupils to learn English easily by basic literary skills such as reading,listening and speaking.It makes pupil becomes more broadminded,daring in giving ideas,be independent and brave enough to explore English.
    Its true,we feel hard before we try but it becomes more easier after we tried.And remember, heated gold becomes ornament,beaten copper becomes wires,depleted stone become statue; so the more pupil study literature the more genius they will be.Thank you.

    I would like to add more comments and ideas again.
    For some of us literature brings to mind about difficult books to read. However children's literature is an important part of English language literature as a body work and using it for teaching to benefit students.

    Young learners in particular need a very active classroom and variety throughout the lesson. Ten minutes is probably the maximum length of time we can expect students of this age to focus on their attention before we move to another section.In any lesson there is always a little enthusiastic singing, listening, reading and artwork.The literature approach is one that works very well. For example students singing nursery rhymes, reading fairy tales and fables.

    According to Anne Burns (2003, p. 22), a surprising result from her study of second-language learner attitudes toward literacy learning included the insight that "students were almost unanimous in their desire for teachers to read aloud to them." She credited the value of hearing fluent reading in English, listening to the written words, hearing correct stress and intonation patterns, as well as providing a model for imitation as possible reasons .

    As a conclusion using children's literature can be an effective and enjoyable way to teach language. Students who are motivated by a story forget their worries and anxieties about their new language. Literature is a sense of enjoyment, excitement and emotional involvement that is necessary condition for learning and using it in the classroom which can provide them the content base of the magic.

    i have been exposed to nursery rhymes, fairy tales, classical poems since i was practically a baby. what i experienced is that learning another language in such an interesting, fun and adventurous way is one of the main reason why i found learning English is easy and enjoyable. literature has always been considered by me and my family as a source of learning a language in a very fun yet effective method.
    that's the very reason why i think i was excited when it was introduced in the KSSR. i wanted to share with my pupils the joy and excitement that i experienced learning literature.
    i do not believe in learning something from a different culture will do us any harm. i mean of course we will teach our children the English literature if the target language we wish them to acquire is Englih. they can learn about sang kancil or hang tuah in sastera melayu. there's no big deal about it. either way, the moral values of any culture teaches us to be someone decent.
    to learn a language, one must be able to listen and understand what is being spoken and of course it's compulsary to be able to speak the language as well.a literature class is a platform that can provide these necessary tools.
    students will be easily bored if you bombarded them with pages of grammar exercises but try replacing the exercises with pages of fables.
    so, i do think the ministry is moving towards the correct path in making languange learning fun and meaningful for the children.

    1. I totally agree with Hana. I use to hear fairy tails as bedtime stories only but children nowadays are lucky to learn through application in lesson. I am sure pupils now are enjoying KSSR aproach which is designed on such a way that includes literature. Teacher and pupil could enjoy friendly environment through learning because literature made it so. KSSR has open up the importance and secret of literature basically.

    In my point of view, we are heading towards the right direction in prescribing literature for young primary learners as children's literature enhances development of language skills and other critical thinking skills that provide the foundation of learning.Children read for fun, and in the process, they will develop better reading skills and abilities to enjoy more reading. Because reading children's literature stimulates a child's imagination and reading provides an important visual experience. other than that children's literature teaches moral values, cultural and traditions.     Literature is a good way to encourage and motivate the children to read more books and at the same time it helps to improve their reading and writing skills. Furthermore, it makes the lessons more lively and interesting using different fables, fairy tales and etc compared to their textbooks. Other than that, children would be enjoying themselves with role plays and acting classes which are interactive, communicative and expressive. It gives them the chance to express themselves and show their talents while acting out different characters from the books especially those who are talented in this.

    In my point of view,we as teachers are not really sure whether we are in the right direction in prescribing literature for learners in primary education.What is the indicator for it?We can say that when the student enjoyed our lesson,and gain a few aspect of literature, we 'think' we are at the same path with the government needs.But,when government introduced literature in our education system,they do not provide the indicator for it.The government do not provide clear direction and benchmark for teachers in teaching literature.It is a good move to introduce literature in primary school,but teachers need to be prepare with it.I think the move to include literary materials for young learners is made to provide student with access to the culture of people whose language they are studying.By using literature with students,it can help them to become more sensitive to some of the overall features of English and aware of mixed races in our society.

      Sharing literature with children at a young age is very important to their childhood development. “Sharing books with very young children not only helps them learn to listen but also to be more attentive and relate various stories to their own life” (Children’s Literature, 2009). Literature educates the whole person. Young learners can be encouraged to develop attitudes towards them by examining values in literary. These values and attitudes relate to the world outside the classroom. I think there is the possibility that the Ministry of Education may want to positively change some things in the system and nurture the moral and rational thinking among the younger generation.

    Literature is relevant to the pupils as it allows students to see examples of how words are strung together in efforts to portray the writer's intentions. Providing examples of how different writing style, settings and themes can affect the outcome of the writer's work would be a great way to hone their writing skills.

      Precisely, Poh Yoke. Children are able to grasp grammar aspects better through literature components, that is after nurturing love for literature in them. I suggest the earlier they are exposed to literary materials, the better it is for them. We have to first instill and implant the importance of literary elements through fun learning and eventually it will etch in their minds. A study revealed ( a relaible one ) that the younger the person, the better the learning outcome is. Why the wait then?

    Towards my opinion, by the application of literary studies for young learners is to enhance and to trigger besides to motivate the pupils to learn literature, so that it will be a learning base for them when they study complete literature syllabus in secondary school because they have already recognised and understood the basics of literature component. Moreover, by learning literature at a young age, pupils will make the positive characters from certain poems, stories, or fairy tales as a role model, thus making them more decent, disciplined, and transforming their attitudes and behaviour. In my point of view, the Ministry of Education is on the right track by including literature studies for primary pupils. This literature education will teach pupils about the key elements of literature in poems, stories, fairy tales and fables besides increasing their vocabulary and critical thinking when they read any literature materials. Nevertheless, the excitement created by a good story or fairy tale is also likely to generate more pupils to speak and communicate than the often rather artificial language texts. So, by looking at all the views, I, 100% agree that the Ministry Of Education had organised an excellent plan by introducing literature studies for primary school students.

    Literature is an important element in the language education landscape. Exposing the appropriate literary materials for young learners in early education is the conventional way and the first step of learning literature.
    The emphasis on learning literature should be started from Pre-School and Primary Year 1. It is not only a good guidance to the path of proper language usage but also helps the young learners to enjoy learning literature through interesting activities, valuable productions/materials/worksheets, unforgettable participation (learners’ activities) and consistent perception which always remains in their thoughts as ‘sweet memories’ when they take part in literature learning.
    Prescribing literature at primary level is the beginning step for young learners to be the excellent language users with good quality of moral values which can be applied in their real daily life.

    I agree with CHRISTINA regarding her idea, which states that the study of literature for young learners can help primary pupils learn language better with good quality of moral values which they can apply in their daily life. The Ant and the Dove and The shepherd boy and the wolf, which are among the most famous fables that highlights excellent moral values which are one good deed deserves another and a liar's word is hard to believe even when he speaks the truth. These values can be very useful in their daily life.

    I agree with Hana Nirmala.As she said we still remember the poem,fables and fairy tales that we learnt those days and we are implementing it to our children now days.So it's very important to teach literature from preschool.It will sharpen their memory by understanding literature in learning process.Teaching grammer by using literary materials can organise student easily in learning and speaking English.I think learning literature is important for our pupils.In future,they will be able to be a world class English speaker like our proud Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad.Whatever said and done,the implementation of learning literature in primary school has shown a remarkable progress.   85. Yes. I agree with christina. Learning literature should start as early as six to seven years old. It will help to expose them to a proper language usage. The most interesting and simple way to teach them is by listening to the rhymes and stories.

    I have read all the comments above and I agree with all the opinions and reasons given by friends. Through my experience,ministry of education have tried many ways to implement literature in school especially in primary school. Lots of literature books been send to school for the teachers to use in class in order to increase the
    level of interest among the pupils to read books. But what I can see is the books are kept in the library or SAL room without any use. I believe we as teacher should increase our interest first to teach literature and also need to attend any courses that expose us how to teach literature the right way and more fun.

    Engaging... interesting... captivating... appealing... exciting... motivating... you name it and the list goes on and on. Advancement of technology in all areas, education to be specific, has grabbed the attention and opened the eyes of almost all the parenting institutions on the positive effect in the implementation of literature. My question is : Why do we even wait? Why the fear and hesitation? And if not now, when? The Ministry of Education is all fired up in the serious implementation of literary materials in bringing about vast changes through KSSR and who if not the ever armed teachers are the chosen ones in converting this into a reality. Seeing the parents and teachers working hand in hand will make this effort all the more fruitful. In fact, the government's move is nothing to sneeze at.

    Literary materials are very much encouraged to be implemented at a very early age. Fairy tales, fables, nursery rhymes, poems and etcetera are one of the best ways to introduce literature to our young one as they aid the children in being creative, imaginative and innovative. Never mind the grammar aspect of the language. It is the values and positive feedback we are talking about here. Of course, along the way, they may encounter confusion, mixed feelings and intense anticipation, but these are all part and parcel of learning. They learn; slowly but surely, along the way. Why the fuss in forsaking introducing an element that could prove to be highly useful, interactive and effective?

    I just simply love the fact that literature is a wonderful way in cultivating and inculcating moral values. Nothing happens overnight and so is the effectiveness of this idea. In addition to that, colourful and enchanting characters leave our young ones feeling contended and asking for more at the same time. It is in the hands of the presenter in making the literary materials appear educative, fascinating and resourceful. Educators ought to bend over backwards in realizing the good intentions of our government and assist in turning this into a reality. Are we not focused in working towards the National Educational Philosophy in bringing out the best in our children? This quote specifically interests me where “ Education in Malaysia is an ongoing process towards further effort in developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner; so as to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious ”.

    Hence, I couldn’t agree more with the fact that prescribing literature to young learners in primary education is very much encouraged and it simply shows we are moving towards the right direction. I hope I have made enough sense in making this shared discussion appear sensible. I rest my case by encapsulating my previous views.

    Why the move to include literary materials for young learners as early as seven years old( Year One ) is made? We have learned that children have innate ability in acquiring language. However, is that our focus right now when we expose literature to them? Perhaps not too soon. Yes, that is one of our focuses but enriching their moral values is of prime importance. How this agenda or target is to be achieved? Of course through the integration of literary elements which are presented in the forms of fables, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, poems and others. Indirectly, the little ones will develop passion and love for reading literary materials. Realization in differentiating what is good and bad will sink in. What you reap is what you sow. One thing leads to another and before you know it, once the enthusiasm sets in, you can no longer shut them down. They will seek for more materials, be it on their own or through their parents and educators. In addition to that, the literary materials support in developing their emotional intelligence and creativity, besides nurturing their growth and development. Eventually, the chidren advance into having a better personality and social skills. I would like to further substantiate my stands and earlier discussions which may be debatable without sufficient points by quoting a famous author, Donna Norton ( 2010 ) through her book entitled 'Through the Eyes of a Child'. Let us ( teachers ) nurture and nurse our children in becoming competent and able to show appreciation about their own cultural heritage as well as those of others for their own future and betterment.

    For myself, I agree if literature is taught for the early stage in school. But, to make the lesson efficient to the children, the teachers themselves must be well prepared, have enough knowledge on the literature and always be open minded to accept everything which is good to teach to the children. Poems,fables and nursery rhymes are good and also fun for them to learn.
